The fishing community of Bayou La Batre in southern Mobile County has one of the most ethnically diverse populations in Alabama including several groups from Southeast Asia. Over the last thirty five years, Asian cultural traditions have become the latest layer of culture to help define this unique community. Charlie Tran gives us a tour of his town and we meet fisherman, restaurateurs, artists and community leaders. Hosted by Joey Brackner.
Journey Proud is a proud partnership of Alabama Public Television and the Alabama State Council on the Arts.

Awesome video! Proud to be Vietnamese American - 2nd Generation. So appreciative of what this country had done for us. News are so quick to show racism but never point out how small town like Bayou La Batre open its arms to help diversity. Thank you sir!

I’m proud to say I grew up in Bayou La Batre, and working on shrimp boats, gill net fishing, oystering, etc… So many life lessons learned that use to this day, and made me the man I am. Thanks for the vid.

Cool video. I bought a couple cast nets from Brunson Net Co. on line. They supply gear to alot of these La Batre boats.

Nice video but to be honest, Bayou La Batre has kind of dried up and is nothing like it used to be. I grew up just north of this town and rode through there earlier this year for the first time since about the early 1990's to reminisce.....it looks just a step above being a ghost town! Just about all the buildings that used to be bustling on S. Wintzell Ave. are abandoned/boarded up and the whole area just seems to be rather ho-hum. Back in the 1970's and 80's there was always something going on but nowadays it almost seems like its all on life support.

As someone who lives here currently, this town is slowly dieing, there no real economy here aside from 2 ship builders and 1 major seafood supplier(Dominicks), and don't even get me started on how corrupt the city is. Long story short, I keep telling everyone all bayou la batre is, is a footnote on the road to Dauphin island
