What was it like to step ashore in Dunedin in 1848? Enormous challenges lay ahead for these first pioneers and not everyone had what it took. But for those who did, great opportunities to make a new life beckoned.

Really informative and interesting. My great great grandfather was John McLay who arrived on the Mooltan, I did note however that McLay was spelt incorrectly. I have been researching and expanding my family tree for the past year, so have a lot of info. The photo of the bushmen with bullock team clearing timber has my great great uncle Charles or Charlie McLay, standing centre holding axe, one of John McLay's sons, from Waikouaiti, taken late 1890's, a copy of this is in Waikouaiti Coast Heritage Centre. Thanks again look forward to more.
