Journey to Serendipol - Dr. Bronner’s Fair Trade and Organic Coconut Oil from Sri Lanka
About Journey to Serendipol: What does sustainable business look like? What is true fair trade, from root to fruit? Journey to Serendipol (8 minutes) documents the development of Dr. Bronner’s fair trade sister company Serendipol in Sri Lanka-growing out of a tsunami relief effort in 2004 to become the world’s foremost source of certified fair trade and organic virgin coconut oil. Hear the voices of some of the 1,200 organic farmers and 300 staff members who grow and process coconuts for Serendipol’s plant in Kuliyapitiya, as they talk about the project’s impact on local community development. Serendipol serves as a model for fair trade projects around the world.

Dr. Bronner’s is even more fantastic then I thought. Fair Trade started in Sri Lanka after the 2004 Tsunami took 30,000 lives. Part of being fair trade is fair terms for all of the employees, including regular work for them. Nothing is wasted in the production of organic coconut oil from the tree. Workers have been able to receive bonus, once they got a 3 month bonus. Their fair trade funding helps to finish projects, including grants given to the community to help with development such as indoor plumbing and electricity for remote villages. I’ve loved Dr. Bronner’s for a long while now, and I can honestly see that it goes deeper then just a great product. The company cares deeply about the environmental impact of production as well as the employees and farmers that have helped make the company a success. Most employers forget about the people who helped substantiate their business. Kudos to Dr. Bronner, and thank your for sharing this video.

Love this! Love the fair trade, love Serendipol supporting its employees. Parents had to pay for supplies for school that would take away from their earnings, now that's covered! Love that nothing is wasted from the coconut tree and how many benefit from all the jobs!

I had no idea about the fair trade that dr. Bronners participated in. I had heard it but never knew what it exactly was. I hope that one day dr. Bronners goal of uniting human race will be achieved.

I learned that human labor is respected there. Serendipol gives grants every 2 years for home improvement. They give their workers fair and consistent wages. I am really happy I watched this. I already use Dr. Bronner's but to know that they treat their laborers and farmers with respect and care makes a huge difference in my book.

Wow, what didn't I learn!? I always loved Dr. Bronner's but what an amazing thing this company does. The lives they're changing. I very much enjoyed learning about how this company is giving these families who have lost so much hope, and a good chance in life. I especially enjoyed the story of the woman who lost her husband 15 years ago, and to know that this job gave her the opportunity to give her children a roof over their head, food, and education. I also loved the part where every two years they give employees grants for home improvement projects. Keep up the amazing work you do!

Thanks for making me watch the video. I like ideas of community involvement and personal responsibility. Journey to Serendipol is an example of following your money. If you want to change something, you do it with your dollars.

I knew what "organic" meant, but not "fair trade." To see that the spirit of fair trade virtually touches every point on this supply chain is incredible.

I've also started making my own shampoo with their baby mild castille soap as an ingredient, and their lavendar castille soap with some water as hand soap in the bathroom. Such fantastic products!

I have known about Fair Trade since I was pretty young and that it gives workers and farmers equal wages, but I did not know about everything else that was given. It's amazing to see that there are people in this world that give so much to these people; health, education and better living situations. So many people take for granted what was given to us; there needs to be more projects like this, to show and hopefully change people's mindset on how much they "need".

I love this family owned company so happy I only use you guys for everything, from sal suds to 18-one hemp soaps. We are all-one, I'm so happy about seeing lives around the world improve, instead of seeing workers get ripped off their supplies from "mainstream" corps. I will continue to buy and support till the day I die and hopefully I pass along the benefits to my family

The most interesting thing I learned? Well, I knew the gist of this and celebrate it, but what I had hoped to learn was if the high & growing world demand for coconut oil is creating so much coconut trees and not enough other parts of the ecosystem that what is marketed as "sustainable" may not be as much of a sustainably complete ecosystem as I want to believe. Are these coconut farms monocultures? But to the extent that products that extract goods from one place and syphon them off to distant places can be part of a sustainable world, this is a very appealing company.
