I was 14y/o in 1981. And I can’t even describe for you young people how much Journey, and certain other bands, were loved by everyone! Looking back, I realize what a strong sense of connection, belonging and acceptance this gave us. Yesterday, I came across one of the guys that played guitar in our basement band back then. That’s another thing that was common, we didn’t just listen, we played along! Thanks for listening to an old lady rant. 😆

many of my heroes from the sixties had a hard time performing live as good as the studio tricks. Perry is still alive and well and of course we see even better that the original recording. the instrumental technique was zero difficult, but by the same token the band members were extremely skilled. they rolled it all back as Perry joined the band. by dumping their egos and joining with Perry - the rest is history. god bless them all.

Song wise, there is nothing simple here at all. The song is one of the very best "crafted" pieces I've ever heard. There is allot going on in this song musically, and the only way to explain it is to look at how a pocket watch works. Musically, it's like that.

Musicians had to actually be musicians in that era. They had to have a real voice and know their instrument inside out. I played in bands in this era. The competition was intense, and it was real. I had the experience of totally kicking ass with a great set, or my band getting our asses handed to us by another band because they were better. But it was real competition. We had to work harder to get better. Now nobody cares about real music and the hard work that goes into it.

Good lord I don't even think he uses any kind of in ear monitor or anything. He's just totally pitch perfect naturally. What an amazing singer

They had no in-ear monitoring systems back in '82. That's a product of the late 80's- early 90's. He just had floor monitors. And the early in-ear stuff was just horrible. Took about 15 years to get to the point where it was passable.

You are correct sir. I played in bar bands in the 70s and 80s and when I would go to big arenas to see headliners, I was always amazed that they could hear anything out of the floor monitors, even with PA's that cost 1/2 million bucks! (BTW, the best by far for sound was Frank Zappa and the Mothers)

Steve Perry sings this song like that kid who doesn’t study a lick but walks into the final exam and aces it. Effortless.

of course Steve couldn't keep that level up for long, but he reached the peak like no other singer... I'd be honored if some fans of classic 80s rock anthems would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of EYE OF THE TIGER by Survivor, WHO'S CRYING NOW by Journey, and AGAINST ALL ODDS by Phil Collins on my YT channel in tribute to the era of legendary power ballads. Live acoustic with no autotune. Thanks and keep on rocking.
