Favela Wars (2003): The violence spilling out of Brazil's slums or 'favelas' has made the country's two major cities more dangerous than most war zones.
Subscribe to Journeyman here: kzfaq.info_c...
Children in Rio de Janeiro are eight times more likely to die violently than those in the West Bank. "They live on a kill or be killed basis," states anthropologist Luke Dowdney, who has spent five years studying the favelas. "If they don't kill someone when they're told to, they will be killed." The favelas have become no-go zones for the police. "We are always well armed, waiting for them," boasts 18 year old JN, gang leader in the infamous 'City of God'. He became a drugs trafficker at 10 and has been responsible for the deaths of numerous people. However, there is hope that President Lula will be able to halt the violence.

I'm an American living in Brasil. It always pains me to hear Brasilians that are rich or well off make a comment about how Brasil isn't dangerous and how embarrassed they are that videos like this are being made and making Brasil look bad. These are the people who don't live in the favelas, who don't experience favela life, people that will never know what it is to be black and poor in the slums of Brasil or know the fear of living with violence everyday. THIS IS REAL. THIS IS LIFE IN BRASIL.

That's what you get when chaotic populational growth(mainly through immigration towards the richest cities),lack of any sort of governmental planning during decades(probably centuries),huge and disgraceful regional inequalities and a very inefficient and we could say murderous policy of "war to drugs" are mixed up in a single country.

One of the most amazing things I saw was when I lived in the favela de Paraisopolis. Pode ver os predios dos ricos em cima do morro. The poor live in a hole in the ground and the rich have skyscrappers with pools and electric fences right above the slum! Brasil is a country of contrasts more than anything.

There are places in the world that are more violent, corrupt and poor but Brazil is so often targeted because it has the resources to do SO much better. These other places often don't. Brazil has everything going for it: natural resources, size, a suitably sized population. The rich culture and natural beauty make it extra special.

Hey Daniel... The only other media representation I am familiar that shows a similar hill side organic ghetto environment is the 2008 Incredible Hulk movie with Edward Norton! Those beautiful roving hillside shots showing endless vistas of organic architecture growing like an organism in parallel with the humanity dwelling there interactively sustaining wherever needed... Those shots were pretty sublime! Was watching another documentary showing some of it's inhabitants who were creative and cleaned endless hillsides of garbage transforming the hillside into steps of Beautiful gardens using that same trash for the garden's supporting structure. All done within self governed communities that had to be inventive and self reliant. Not to be dismissive of the violent sad areas but I thought it was nice to show that reality is not all so easily demonized where humanity is concerned. Conversely, My violent side appreciated the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 maps That took it's Brazilian Favela inspiration and created fun maps from the complexity and chaos of such an organic hillside environment. Easily my favorite parts of the campaign from that game! I was wondering if they might have honestly captured the feel of such environments?

Legalize drugs, take out the profit element & give people real info about the dangers. Abolish all debts, socialize natural wealth to finance ecological selfreliance. Show people how to take care of themselves, housing, food, farming etc. Open up hospitals and make all knowledge available for the public. Deny all centralized government without direct democracy, localize economies, dissolve borders and abolish armies. Police should obey a constitution and be chosen by the people. Freedom.

This has nothing to do with multiculturalism. This has a lot to do with sistemic racism and structural marginalizing of The poor though. Favelas wouldnt even exist if The cortiços (poor small collective housing) inside The traditional neighborhoods werent Destroyed in The beginning of The 20th century. But of course, a racist like you would never know anything like that, and if He did, He would pretend He doesnt.

The colonial Portuguese should have sent the blacks back to Africa after Slavery ended and imported huge numbers of Germans, Scandinavians, Frenchmen, Poles, Dutch, Irish, Czechs, Russians etc.. as well as more Japanese, Koreans and even Chinese. Yah, I know Germans and Japanese came to Brazil but not enough. If that would have happened, Brazil would have been a fully developed nation. Maybe a bit boring but fully developed. It would have even been a rival to the USA in power.

Ive heard that Brazil has like the 10th largest economy in the world, and it has loads of potential to grow. But, with these "isolated" problems like the favelas, it will be hard for Brazil to reach the "developed country" status.

Thank you for informative, I feel that Brazil is growing in the correct direction forward. So much so, we are presently building in Curitiba, PR. If you dont show these videos...The world media will give a negative view of the whole country, Now that the Olympics are coming.

I am Brazilian, and I think that the other brazilians should stop arguing with americans or what ever, and start to argue with the government so they can make a move into changing this. It's a shame for a country like Brazil to still keep favelas like in RIO, I know it's hard, but they gotta start changing, otherwise they'll never end. Other cities like Belo Horizonte have a program to eliminate all favelas within 10 years, and it's working, we can see the new homes for the people.
