The recent failed assassination of President Ramos-Horta is shrouded in mystery. Killed that same day outside Horta 's home was rebel leader Alfredo Reinado. His lover, Angelita Pires, is speciously blamed, possibly used as a scapegoat by more sinister forces.
Relations between Reinado and the government were never amicable. Representing the repressed Westerners, Reinado led troops away from the armed forces on accounts of discrimination from Eastern factions. Yet amnesty meetings between the President and Reinado were eventually organised. He discussed a future where he could live in peace, says Pires of her lover. The engagements proved unconstructive, and on the eve before his death, a government emissary escorted a drunk Reinado to the President s home. Officials have been especially coy about the urgent summon. It is thought that Ramos-Horta has the answer.

Honestly, I believe the story his assistant gave over the phone. The leader and the girl drank and/or brought alcohol, they probably left when he found out there were people coming from the president's meeting. After they arrived and explained that amnesty was not agreed on, he obviously flipped out. And if he was drinking at the time, it may be that simple. He just wasn't thinking clearly and could have decided that he'll go down there himself and talk it out with the president directly. I can see how, with those facts as the backdrop, you could have basically the entire group saying that they had no real plan other than to show up. And of course, when the real military sees a bunch of people show up with guns and the leader of the powerful rebel group show up at the president's house, it's not surprising someone took the shot. It's unfortunate for the rebels, but it worked because now everyone's surrendering and getting the amnesty that they probably would have agreed to anyway given enough time. It's crazy how one small decision changed everything. I guess that's what happens when you build a power structure where everyone is too scared to question their leader's actions.

@muhammad irpan how could Timor be part of Indonesia? they don't even have same ancestor or look or speak same language? Timor was colonized by Portuguese and Indonesia was part of the Dutch so different culture and Indonesia annexed and conquered Timor in 1970s but not all people of Timor support the Indonesia rules so they wanted freedom thru a UN referendum. During 1970s United States and Australia didn't care much about human rights violations in East Timor because they got more than 90 percent stakes in Freeport and Newmont gold mining concessions from Indonesia government but now those stakes are being gradually overtaken by government of Indonesia and so the human rights violations came up as political leverage (agenda)
