Chateau Preparations, Journey to the Château de Colombe, Ep. 44

In this week's episode, Patrick and Stuart prepare for the upcoming cold weather months. They get a large delivery of firewood for the chateau and start cleaning out and inspecting some of the fireplaces. They repair a broken chateau window as well as start shopping and planning for their chateau kitchen renovation.
Join Patrick and Stuart on their journey to find a neglected, forgotten, or crumbling château in France, and then continue to follow them as they work on its restoration, rénovation, decoration, and furnishing. Along the way, they will also create and share videos on their preparation for having gîtes for guests, and an event venue in their chateau (wedding, birthday, anniversary, organization or club meetings, retreats, etc.).

First off, Stuart, your choice of musical accompaniment is outstanding. I pray all goes well for your father. Patrick and Stuart, you certainly got your cardio workout with the stacking of the firewood. Don't sell yourselves short; Terry would be proud of your efforts on reglazing the damaged window. Everybody, that pack of dogs and winter preparations will keep Patrick pretty busy while Stuart is away and he might have to do a bit more canning, too!

Running a fireplace, it’s vital to have the chimneys cleaned annually. Creosote builds up and is the main cause of chimney fires which in the chateau would be devastating. If you’ve kept your fire going overnight, build a really hot fire first thing in the morning and this will help to burn off the creosote built up overnight. Please ensure whoever fits your fireplaces has been in the business for a long time. I love a good fire, they’re mesmerising and nothing beats the heat you get from one. All the best with it all xx

I have spent years stacking wood. It will save you tons of time and effort to use a wheelbarrow between the pile that was dumped off and the stacking.

Thanks, Lynn. It would have taken more time to do it that way in this instance. We mentioned at the beginning that the floor of the wood storage is MUCH higher than the ground outside and is soft saw dust. Trying to push a wheelbarrow up and into the barn and through a thick soft floor would have been a nightmare.

To use the wheelbarrow method you would've needed some long planks over the soft mulch, but, then you wouldn't have gotten your cardio workout...lol.

🤣😂🤣. The stove we are getting has 2 more burners and has 2 ovens and 2 warming drawers as well as a heating cabinet. We fell in love with it once we saw it. 🤪😉🤪. Heating is going to be………. Yes, an adventure. An expensive one. I’d rather have a pellet burner but that’s for the future. Love you darling. 💖🥰💗

As they say in France, they run on their own time, I would call to get radiator appointments now so hopefully by sometime in October they will be done, (just kidding) and you have your back up heat. Hi Joni. 🤣. They do. It is all more relaxed here. Except driving through Paris . Good grief! I like that we have both options. Oil to keep the damp out and wood to heat specific rooms. I had to laugh when you put the glazing points back in after replacing window panels. I have renovated a few properties and being a girl. I used my hairspray can bottom to push them in. Who knew there was a tool 😆 another delightful episode. 💞 p.s. my son is still in hospital and one thing we talk about to give him hope, is coming to Europe next year, and you know, I want to come cook for you (retired pastry chef for Bill Gates and Paul Allen) and chip in with renovations. That's my dream 😊💖

Good morning Patrick & Stuart, what a busy video, so much work done! Getting preparations for winter now is brilliant, time goes so quickly and getting orders done before some of the other people makes stock availability so much easier. The order of wood was most important, loved the stacking, gives a homely feeling even though it is outside in the barn. Then the window, loved the arch shape on top, a pleasant change to the usual straight square. Now that's another important job done. Weather is strange, things happen without warning, the elements just come together and all fury can break lose. It was great to see the dogs romping around sniffing out the new strange smells I think the one even was smelling the bench maybe a bird came to land on it, they would know about it. Glad the insurance got sorted out which is very important. It can be most annoying when you wish matters sorted out and a consultant does not know or is not helpful in giving advice when needed. Kitchen space is so important, hence careful planning is essential. If there is a pantry it would be wonderful, otherwise a pantry cupboard will have to be installed. Have a happy day, enjoy you trip be happy. Kind regards.

I’m glad we have the wood sorted. I’m doing a lot of small things that needs doing this week. And I have to remember to film it. 🤪😂. Otherwise I’ll be in trouble with Stuart. 😮😂. I agree. It’s not far from the kitchen door. We did learn how to glaze from watching Terry at Escape to the dream. Isn’t that great. 💖💖💖. I’m so glad that Florence reached out and helped us. I’m glad that this is our third kitchen remodel. We have everything planned and will eventually sit here in the kitchen and look at the plans and imagine how it will all look and work. And the electric needs to get planned. OK, we already talked to John about it. 🤣👍🏻🤣. We have and keep the cupboard under the stairs and a pantry as well as the back kitchen. We need storage! Hi Roseanne. You are absolutely correct. The logs are larger. 50cm. When we make our own wood, we usually do for 30 cm. It would be nice if they could help with wood stacking and splitting, once we get to that stage. We have one wood burning stove in the kitchen and will renovate the two fireplaces in the salons to have wood burners installed next year. Huge thank you ❤❤❤

Oh my, that load of wood brought back memories for me as I remember the days when big truck loads of wood would come to our home in the days of wood and coal burning furnaces and stoves here in B.C. Canada....that's going back a long way! The delivery person was very good at dumping the huge loads right in the middle of the driveway that my Dad needed to drive down when he came home from work after a long day in Construction. Me being the eldest child and yes me being a girl was the one who was relied on to clear a path wide enough so Dad could drive in.....I had slivers upon slivers...oh the memories!!! There is nothing like a real fire in the fireplace and I hope you will get the help to get some going for the Fall and Winter....how cozy that would be! You two continue to entertain me and bring a smile to my face every time!!!!

I remember seeing a picture of a fireplace in one of the “Great Houses” and it was in the main eating hall. It was one of the biggest fireplaces that I’ve ever seen. Could you imagine the firewood it would need to keep that room warm? Hello from PEI. We had the hurricane on Friday and Saturday. We still dont have power to the house and we are relying on the generator. Spending a lot of money on gas. Our stove is not connected to the household use of the generator. I gave up trying to cook meals and being creative. Tonight's dinner was baked beans and hot dogs cooked in the microwave. Hello lovelies, great to see you getting organised for the winter months. Best get you heating boiler serviced and up and running well before you need it. We had a new outside Grant boiler fitted this year and it fab. Our wood for wood burner in the lounge is stacked to the roof of one of our out buildings. Great job on the window, another little skill learnt. It great to see so many lovely people contacting you to help you with things like sorting your car insurance out. now to teach the pooches how to fetch wood and bring it into the Chateau this winter! nice job replacing the window panes. We had to replace a pane and it seemed to take forever but once done, we were proud. Until we noticed the glass was SO different - it was too smooth. We have the old glass with those slight waves and imperfections. To replace it would have been a little too pricey but we found a salvage place that had old windows and used the glass from one and now it fits. (PS this is a great tip if you're going to frame art work - get old window panes for the old glass if you can - then cut it to fit the frame. It's a marvelous look especially for a Chateau.) Thank you for sharing - I so appreciate it and the time it takes to publish a video. Bisous!

😂🤣😂. That would be lovely. Dogs on wood duty. 🎉. Window was a fun project. I agree, the new glass doesn’t look quite right. Once we start to actually replace windows, we will lose at the old glass but will keep the windows. We have enough buildings to store them. 👍🏻. Then we can use that for art. Great idea. Thank you. It takes Stuart about 20-25 hours to put one vlog together. Thank you for noticing. I love it. Hugs. 💖🥰💖
