DAY TRIPPIN' BETWEEN THE WORLD'S 2 CLOSEST CAPITALS (Vienna to Bratislava)

In this video, we take a day trip between 2 of the world's closest capitals: Vienna, Austria and Bratislava, Slovakia! We were very excited for this trip because all the good things we've heard about Bratislava!
We start off traveling by train between the two cities. The total trip only takes about an hour so it's the perfect day trip from Vienna! After we got off the train we were able to enjoy the beautiful walk into the downtown area and see St. Michael's gate, which stands out with its unique architecture and teal color. Unfortunately, it started to rain on us but we still enjoyed our time as much as possible by going to Primate's Palace. We also had the palace all to ourselves and were able to walk around and take many videos and pictures.
After Primate's, we headed over to the BLUE CHURCH which is a unique and colorful building that slightly resembled a marshmallow candy! Next, we went to St. Martin's Cathedral and toured the Crypts underneath the church.
One amazing thing about Bratislava was that a lot of the tourist attractions were affordable (1-3 euros) and informative. It was such a cool experience to be able to hop on a train and within a short hour we entered a completely new country with a different country with its very own language, architecture, culture, and food.
We had an amazing time and would love to explore more of the country (and maybe we will soon hehehe)

Fun fact: I went from Vienna to Bratislava for not even thirty minutes. Someone in my family dances in Bratislava and we are from Vienna and this person had left his dancing shoes in Vienna, so I had to bring it to him.

👋 Well you have at least 1 slovakian fan :) The restaurant you visited is not a typical tourist trap, food is pretty solid, but the prices are indeed tourists :) that's why nobody local was there. But there are worse traps that you could end in just a few minutes walk from that place. So you have been lucky!

It’s not as different as you think. Bratislava used to be called Pressburg and was mostly German speaking until the WW1. It was basically a Vienna’s suburb within the Habsburg empire.

More exactly, it belonged to the Apostolic Kingdom of Hungary (which in turn did not belong to the Habsburgs until the 17th. century) from 1000 till 1920. A dozen Hungarian kings were crowned in Pressburg (or Pozsony in Hungarian), which served as temporary capital while central Hungary was occupied by the Turks. Having said that, there used to be a sizeable German population (on top of the Hungarian one) in Pozsony/Pressburg until 1920. It was largely a trilingual city until just one century ago. All of this is now gone and the city has become sadly and boringly monocultural - like much of Central Europe.

I'm planning my trips around europe, and Bratislava seems pretty below average in terms of museums/castles/churches/history... but the nightlife is good (and cheap).

Considering doing Bratislava/Vienna for a few days next month, any other suggestions for 2 Cities/countries really close to eachother where you can feasibly visit 2 countries in 3 or 4 days?

Hello! :) Bratislava/Vienna is a great option. Also you can look into Belgium/Netherlands, we did those two within a week about 4 years ago and enjoyed it! Also Austria/Switzerland/Germany/Liechtenstein

The two closest capitals in the world? I'm afraid you haven't checked properly. On top of the list is the duo Kinshasa-Brazzaville, on either side of the Congo River, and you could even argue that it's actually the Vatican City and Rome, since there's zero distance between them 🙂 As far as I know, Vienna-Pressburg come in 3rd place.

If you take a tram you have to validate the ticket within 50 seconds onboard or they give you an 80 euro fine. They wait for tourist to make the mistake of coming to Slovakia.

Thanks to videos like this one, Bratislava is not overrun by tourists and can continue to be the city for the locals. 🎉 You chose to visit in January and then complained about the weather 🤷🏼‍♀️ No knowledge of the town, not getting a tour guide... just clueless wandering around. When you mentioned gray communist vibe you showed a historic building that just happened to be gray - that was not a communist era building 🤦‍♀️

I know that typical Americans don't take any foreign country seriously and just see it as a cute entertainment. Not all, if course. Cultural understanding goes a long way.
