Lyrics
Walk in silence
Don't walk away, in silence
See the danger
Always danger
Endless talking
Life rebuilding
Don't walk away
Walk in silence
Don't turn away, in silence
Your confusion
My illusion
Worn like a mask of self-hate
Confronts and then dies
Don't walk away
People like you find it easy
Naked to see
Walking on air
Hunting by the rivers
Through the streets
Every corner abandoned too soon
Set down with due care
Don't walk away, in silence
Don't walk away

My wife is terminally ill with MND. Just recently her health has taken another step along the journey to the end. I am with her every step of the way but over the last 5 years it has taken a toll on me mentally. I have always loved Joy Division from when they started (I am 60 years old). I find myself listening to this quite simply beautiful yet sad song every day now. It seems to be helping me along the route my wife is walking into the light whilst I walk into the dark.

Recently shepherded my wife of 37 years thru her mental illness, into whatever is awaiting her soul in the next world. We are there for our loved ones to the lonely heartbreaking end. Always leave yourself a path back to your own happiness… I’m 65, lost her 9 months ago, and I continue to work on my own life and happiness, as I’m sure that’s what she would have wanted…and what I need. Stay strong for yourself.

I think he did precisely what he set out to do. People harp on longevity not because they are in love with life, but because they are afraid of death. Living to be a hundred doesn't mean anything in itself. A life can be long and empty or short and full or somewhere in between. Ian's life was extraordinary, and that's what really matters.

Suddenly, the lights begin to rotate and focus on the stage… they all come back. Let it wash over you and then near the end, let yourself grow with the song. Rise up. Rise up strong and rise up to be the strong person you have been made to be. It is not about despair. Ian obviously had a very tender soul. During his short life, he gave more then he could handle. My take on Ian's life is that he was not a rockstar, but a poet who never asked for fame, only to be understood. Joy Division could never be more then what it was. His demise was decided the day Joy Division became what they were.

I'm a man who is now, 57 years old. Joy Division have been a permanent fixture in my life, since I was 14. Even now, when I watch Control for the umpteenth time and this incredible song plays out at the end, I have an uncontrollable [sic] urge to burst into tears. That is the power of Ian's lyrics, and of his story. It's also testimony to the power and majesty of Joy Division's music. ❤ 4:32

Unfortunately I lost my girlfriend 4 and a half years ago and she was never in to Joy Division until we met. Then once we got together she heard all my albums and began to like them. She passed way 4 and a half years ago,so I chose the music at her funeral and the song that was played out at the end was Atmosphere and it was the best send off my darling Patricia could have ever hoped for. Great music back in the late 70's early 80's that will never be forgotten.

Tears in my eyes : The lyrics of “Atmosphere” are both abstract and deeply emotional, with themes of isolation and melancholy. Ian Curtis’s distinctive baritone vocals lend the song a haunting quality that resonates with listeners. The music itself is characterized by its atmospheric and ethereal quality, driven by Peter Hook’s basslines, Bernard Sumner’s guitar, and Stephen Morris’s drumming. “Atmosphere” is a testament to Joy Division’s ability to create a mood and atmosphere that draws listeners into a world of dark, emotional intensity. It’s a song that has left a lasting impact on the music world and is often cited as one of the band’s most powerful and enduring compositions.

All I think of when listening to this song was 13 year old me watching Control at 4am and crying at the end. 😢 I was also very depressed then, 7 years later I still feel the same but I’ve finally understood why. The why is honestly both a blessing and a curse. I don’t think I’ll be able to watch that movie ever again. So being that age and watching that movie really moved me because the whole way through I completely felt all the emotions Ian felt down to my core. Rest easy Ian we miss you and I hope you’re now at peace. If you’re struggling know that you’re not alone, after so many years of pain I’m still struggling too. I’m here with you💚💚💚 Depression is like waves, one hits you so hard you think you’ll fall off the boat but other days they feel like ripples. Please stay here not for others but for yourself because I believe even people like us can come a long way and achieve amazing things for us and that can eventually inspire other people like us to continue on. Sending everyone hugs ❤️

This song is something from Ian Curtis's soul. The constant drum beat to me feels like the endless monotony of everyday life. Waking up every morning and getting out of bed to face a world that hates you. "Your confusion, my illusion, worn like a mask of self hate. Confronts and then dies" this line really hit home for me. It makes me think of the anxiety of just normal social interactions and the constant facade of happiness to mask the self-hate. This song is not a cry for help, like some might say. This is a goodbye, a final echo in the darkness. Goodbye, Ian.

I don't care if anyone came here because of Stranger Things. It brought people to a powerful song, written by the very talented Ian Curtis, who took his own life after battling a double whammy of depression and worsening epileptic seizures. It brought you to a great video by Anton Corbijn (who also directed Control, an excellent film & I highly recommend it). There's nothing wrong or bad about being exposed to great music or art, no matter how you came across it.

Their music does not blind you, or try to be ignorant about your negative feelings... Except, it gives you kind of understanding, and feeling, how Ian and so many other young people suffered, and you are not alone. Despite his inner turmoil, he always tried to convince listener, not to walk away in silence...

I suffer from depression and songs like this make me realise I am not alone. Despite having a good support network, some good friends and family that feeling of isolation is still there. Few people understand and fewer want to help but there are many of us out there on this long dark Train. It's a life long battle, not many ups and a hell of a lot of downs - once it is with you it's a constant dark companion ready to strike you at a moments notice. I fucking cried when this song played at the end of Control. It was like Ian's farewell song to the world. I didn't know what the + and - represent when I first saw it on their compilation but now i do. It represents the positive and negative feelings Ian had at that time. He was about to embark on a successful music career but he was also feeling very afraid. He did not know what to do with the two women in his life and he was also very aware of the fact that he could die at any moment from epilepsy.

When you've seen the movie 'Control', you always seem to feel that this song (together with Ceremony) is somehow related to Curtis' life itself, and a projection into other people's lives, to emphasize the fact you as a human being are capable of / are worthy of having a life with a (small) social circle, you can support each other, you can keep an eye on, you can love, you can nurture ... And that in the end, there are people who 'walk away' / 'fade away' in silence, without any post-recognition.

You can really hear his Jim Morrison influence on these ones. R.I.P. Ian Curtis. Legend never forgotten.

2021 and 2022, I have lost my mother first then my beloved brother. These years made me learn about "see the danger, always danger". Remember: we will always soon cry for someone, even if you have to wait apparently with no tears for 20 years.

Joy Division and Bauhaus... Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, The Cure and Talk Talk are the best. They made my Day since the 80'ies.

My Vincenta actually, this owes alot to Lou Reed’s Magnum Opus Street Hassle, “don’t SLIP away” was tweaked a bit by Curtis. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mNF3bKV8zKrafn0.html

So many favourite British bands to choose from in the '80s... So blessed to have been a true '80s' teen/twenty-something. The Brit pub/club scene was electric!!! 💣💥💥💥

My brother just recently took his life, i didnt play this song in his funeral because its a secret Ode i play in my mind for him... He walked away in silence for the last 7 years of his life... Thats how long i hadn't been in his presence, i raised him to the best of my abilities and i feel like i lost a part of my soul with his sudden passing, i wasnt left a letter, heck he did it in such a manner that he was just going to be another "john doe" but ancestors definetly did me a solid with that miracle and i was informed on halloween night that my brothers body was at the morgue. Im so sorry brother... I wish i could of fixed it all for you... I wish i could of erased all the memories of your pain and suffering... You deserved a GOOD life... I miss you ALWAYS

“People like you find it easy” It’s the other way around for me. It’s not that I see other people being happy. It’s that I’ve gotten to the point where it doesn’t even hurt anymore, it’s easy. I don’t cry anymore, I just breathe and accept the pain, and keep going.
