The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning is a book I read several years ago and just recently re-read and decided to finally put into practice. Rather than a quick organizing project, this is truly a way of living and thinking about our relationship to our things and our own mortality. I also recently watched the entire show on Peacock and the principles in the book are beautifully represented in the show. By changing my relationship with accumulating things and truly realizing that every day could be my last, this process has helped me re-shape how I view my things in a beautiful and I hope sustainable way. After cleaning out my mother in law's house that was loaded with stuff, I refuse to leave that mess to my own kids. I've been working on this for several years and I'm finding it getting easier to get rid of stuff. I'm fascinated by the fact that I may be ready to get rid of something today that I wasn't six months ago.

Our parent let go of most of their stuff when they downsized to a retirement community from their 4 bedroom home. It was hard for them but a real gift for my siblings and me. When they passed and we cleared out their condo, we did it in a single day. We had a plan, knew who was taking what and what was going to the charity shop. They had some papers/photos and personal items that we wanted to take more time with so, we boxed that up to be addressed at a later date. All in all, it was a smooth and stress free process. I'm sure it helped that my siblings and I had agreed on a plan and are generally supportive of each other.

I read Swedish death cleaning after my dad died. He had so much stuff to go through it was very eye opening. Even a decade after his death my mom is still finding random objects he had hidden away. Going through all that really made me want to minimize my possessions.

I’ve been decluttering for 3+ years. It just gets better and better. More peaceful, so easy to clean and care for. Minimalism for me is just having the things that serve me well. And no one walks into my home and says where is all of your stuff. They say, your house looks so great.

Your master closet is the size of some tiny houses! 😂😂 By the way, thanks for being real. Exhausted, frustrated, no makeup, just…real. Donating to a Women’s Shelter would be awesome. One of those saved me when I was only 21. Also, if you have cosmetics you never opened, they take that as well. Some men don’t let their wives wear cosmetics, and makeup is such a treasure for some women who weren’t allowed to even have so much as lip gloss.

I started this process after clearing out my moms apartment when we moved her to long term care. I didn’t want my kids having to go through the same thing with our house where I have so much more than my mom did. I don’t want to store stuff I don’t use. This was a good reminder to keep going!

Yes, I helped clean out my Dad's house and emptying out 60 years of stuff was work! While his stuff was organized another family member who died left a daughter an absolute mess of things that should've been thrown out decades ago: I'm determined not to leave that kind of mess for anyone to deal with. Every other year I go though this process and what makes it a positive experience is knowing I'm keeping up with it and my family won't have to deal with it. What will be a challenge will be getting rid of 2 boxes of papers and move them to digital site!

I just spent two days Swedish death cleaning my primary closet, linen closet, under bed storage, nightstand, coat closet and second closet and now that it’s done I feel tired but amazing. Like you mentioned there is no big before and after difference, but I have 6 trash bags to donate, a couple of bags of trash, and about 20 items to sell. I too came across shoelaces, paperclips and foreign coins, and so many items stashed away. Now all that stuff is gone and I have space in my closet to breathe. One thing I learned is that so many items of clothing were bought in the hopes I would look like someone else, and I now realize I need to find my own style and look like the best version of me. Thanks for your very honest inspiration and humor.

I think you are already a minimalist. The way you talk about being deliberate in only having things you use and love is pretty much the definition of minimalism. It’s not about a number of items or the amount of square feet you have. 💕

I've never approached it a death cleaning but rather like move cleaning. I decide if an item is useful/important enough to me that I would take it with me in a move. It was amazing how much I let go of. I like to think that now someone else is making use of those things.

(Jane) The "random shit" comment made me laugh out loud because I know EXACTLY what you meant. I have been on an extended quest to de-clutter, simplify and let go of things that don't bring me joy anymore. Some things that have helped me along the way are: 1. I have a designated spot where I put things that I THINK I want to part with but I can't pull the trigger. Then I periodically go back to them and my response is almost always immediately one of two ways. Either it's "gasp" I love that and want to use it again or, more often, "I forgot I even had that" It's time to go. 2. I have learned to give myself permission to get rid of things that for many years I enjoyed but I don't anymore and maybe someone else will. 3. I forgive myself for my buying mistakes. Keeping something I don't like/use just because I feel guilty about buying it (even inexpensive things) does not make it worthy to keep. It just prolongs the guilt. Thank you for being so open and getting this conversation started!

I wish my grandparents would have done this. After they passed away it took my Father and Aunt over a year to clean everything out and sell the house. They were hoarders and it was very stressful and emotional for my father and aunt to have to deal with all of their belongings after they both passed away. We all tried to get them to get rid of things while they were alive and they never did.

I’m at a stage in life (with 3 little ones) where this process feels unattainable. But I think when we do seasonal deep cleaning I want to take this mindset into it. Be intentional and find freedom in letting stuff go instead of finding the process a burden. I want to be mindful of the new things I acquire for the time being (again, tough with kids!)

Hi Jen, thank you for this video and being so real! Both of my grandmothers and also my mom who passed in 2019 were “collectors” of pretty little things. In fact, one grandmother would say “there’s a garage sale! Let’s go see what I can’t live without” 😂 Both my daughters tell me they appreciate some of these things, but they don’t want them. So I finally curated - well, mostly - what I want to keep into a small china cabinet - also given to me by one of those grandmothers. So now my granddaughter loves to play with them. They might as well get some use!

I used the same junk company you used about ten years ago. Their professionalism and speed (they came right after I asked) were awesome, but the price is so expensive. They helped me get rid of two old ceramic toilets, which I had already placed by my driveway. They came and loaded them and handed me a $240 bill! I had bought them brand new for $80 each at Home Depot! Had I known the cost was so steep, I would have let those old toilets sit in my backyard as flower pots.

Supposedly you don’t need to start it till 65 so we’re ahead of the game! Your video is very relatable. Thank you. It's nice to know that there are many, many other people in the same situations. In my case, "It's out of sight but not out of mind!". I, too, have travel items, etc., in bins or bags. Although I am very organized, I get overwhelmed and exhausted for lack of time, energy, and busy schedules. Once I get things in their place, I take photos, stand back, and admire my work. It creates peace in my mind. I keep a daily to-do list by priority and geographic travel on errands, and rearrange it, as needed. After our Mom died six years ago (at nearly 90 years old), 😢 it took our family a very long time to sort and separate items and keepsakes in our childhood home (built by our Dad and his father and brothers/brothers-in-law) before we put it up for sale. Mom was organized, too, and a collector of things. Grieving and going thru the process created tears, anger, and laughter, along with many memories. We pulled together and accomplished it. I did take many photos of the process before and after, as well as photos of items we were donating, selling, or discarding. I don't want my family to have to go thru the same detailed process when either I am unable to do it myself or after I die. This morning was a high-energy day for me. Therefore, I began by walking and caring for our dog, eating breakfast, sorting and reorganizing items under the kitchen sink, prepared a full-course meal (head start), and started on other household chores. I'll need a nap this afternoon. 😊 I look forward to your future videos. Cathy

It's funny how certain videos pop up just when you need to see them. I've been really working on decluttering (not very successfully) lately and this video really has me motivated to get it in gear. My favorite aunt and uncle both passed away recently and it made me realize that I would much rather have memories than stuff. They went on vacation with us every summer and I have tons of great memories of those trips with them and my cousins and I cherish them all. After I watched one video of yours, I went in my bedroom and cleared out one drawer of my dresser. I would have done another but I had to get dinner going, so I'm jumping back in after this video. When I went through that first drawer I looked at al of it and made quick decisions on if I would wear it now or not and a TON went into a bag to be taken out. I have a lot more work to do, but your videos are motivating me in the best way..:)

What an inspiration. As I look around me, I am faced with so much stuff and so little energy. But! Your video encouraged me to push forward. The most important thing I had not grasped before I watched your video is that I'm only responsible for "my" stuff. I'm living with 3 adults who suffer with adhd (or so they'd have me believe), and I've been so frustrated with their lack of follow-through on ANYTHING! So now I will just begin the task of paring down my own stuff. Ahhhh, that just put some sanity back into my life. So glad I woke up to your video this morning. This spoke to my heart today, Jen! I’ve been thinking the same things about intentionality in my home. I’m single (can’t blame much on my dogs), work from home, and just finished renovating this gorgeous old house but I feel unsettled. It’s the stuff! Thanks for being raw and real! Time to go clear out some shit! 😎

I love this video and the concepts you’ve shared. So many you tubers are doing minimalism videos and I applaud them for pairing down to one pan and one purse, but I think you’ve captured the essence here - what we keep is different for everyone. But what we keep must be useful and having meaning for us - if not, let it go! You’re the best Jenn!

Oh my word this is amazing thank you 🥰 when I lost my dad very suddenly 16 years ago, my sister and I had to sort out/empty our family home and it was a total emotional nightmare. My dad had lived in our family home for 32 years when he passed away (mum passed away when we were quite young) and didn’t clear out anything at all. It was so so painful to do it after losing him and actually we ended up rushing it and now I regret not keeping certain things. This has made me think about my own daughter and I don’t want her to have to go through the same thing. Like you I am in my middle years 😃but it’s great to think ahead and as you say, clear out things that we don’t use/need. Husband will take some convincing but as you say, I can’t force him. Thank you again Jen, you are the best 🥰🥰xxxx

Loved your video!!! I felt the same way! I went through this process awhile back…..and to kinda keep it going on to really hone on things that I use and love (that I think I might love it, but not sure) I turned all the hangars backwards and when I do wear a piece, it goes back in the closet on the hangar forward on the rod. It’s been about 3 weeks, and it’s illuminating on how little I truly wear and love! If after 6 months I haven’t worn it and it’s not seasonal, in the donation pile it goes! Also a great exercise- I’m already learning more about myself and use of my things! Of course, I adjust the timeframe to one season for seasonal items…

After both of my parents were gone, it was incredibly difficult for me to " get rid of" things of theirs that meant something to them, even if the item did not mean the same to me. Unfortunately, due to circumstances outside of my control, I had to make difficult and permanent decisions very quickly, and I still regret some of the decisions that I had to rush through. I hope that I will not leave my daughter in the same situation.

First, I love you ❤ Seriously, the authenticity and shared experience is what were all here for 👏 We helped an extended side of our family go through the final possessions of a family member who passed this year, so I've recently experienced that. Also, I spent many childhood years in a home where we routinely bought things we needed because there was so much stuff (never organized) that we knew we wouldn't find something missing. The adults were the worst offenders, not the kids. The peace I want when it comes to possessions is to truly know what is in a space as you described at the end. I can't wait to see the rest of this journey!
