DIRECTOR Saim Sadiq has announced himself to the world with ‘Joyland’ - a film that had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in an official selection category, Un Certain Regard.
He ended up being handed the Jury Prize yesterday (May 27) and this is just one below the top prize which went to the film ‘The Worst Ones’ by Lise Akoka & Romane Gueret.
Set in Pakistan, ‘Joyland’ is a powerful film above love, its limits (?), its pressures and its joys too.
Haider (Ali Junejo) joins an erotic dance troupe and falls for Biba, a transgender performer, who is assertive and confident and does not take prisoners in a deeply patriarchal culture that Is like a straightjacket everyone is (actually) trying to get out of - it is one the great strengths of ‘Joyland’ - to show that few feel fulfilment when they are stymied and mocked for the choices they make with their hearts.
The ‘Joyland’ of the title is a theme park where two of the central characters Mumtaz (Rasti Farooq), wife of Haider and Nucchi (Sarwat Gilani), Haider’s sister-in-law, can be themselves, let their hair (and guard) down and enjoy themselves.
It is a rare spot of freedom from the prying eyes and the callous judgement of those who look from the outside in - with little sympathy or respect for the struggles of others.
His earlier short film, 'Darling' which premiered in Venice Film Festival and won an award there was loosely the starting point for 'Joyland'.
Sadiq talks about all these themes in our interview and his journey as a student filmmaker at Columbia University who first came into academia to study anthropology (and our slight misunderstanding that he didn’t attend film school).
