In "Do You Need a Dirt Jumper? | Over 40 Mountain Bike tips" I'm joined again from Lee from LeeLikesBikes.com to wrestle with Dirt Jumpers. We both agree mountain biking is always about the human first and gear second. But the Dirt Jumper unlocked something for me and several of my mountain bike riding buddies. So what makes a dirt jump bike different than a traditional mountain bike and do you need a dirt jumper. We put together a decision tree to help you decide if the dirt jumper is worth making room for.

At age 50, I picked up a dirt jumper last fall to start racing bmx with my kid. My skills have improved so much even after being on a mountain bike for 25 years. I’m on it more now than any other bike I own ... skatepark, bmx track, Rays, even just around the neighborhood.

I'm not quite 30 yet. Started riding BMX in middle school and that continued throughout high school and a few years after. Ended up stopping for one reason or another and went years without riding a bike (minus the occasional rental in a new city for example.) During the pandemic I got into MTB stuff on KZfaq. The thought of being able to take my former love for BMX (I mostly rode street and park) and mix it with hiking/the outdoors. Decided to pick up a bike about a month ago to really get into it. Landed a like new Marin San Quentin for a great price. I knew I needed something more then most beginner bikes could handle, since with my BMX experience, I knew I would be sending jumps on day 1. The San Quentin is awesome. The geometry of it is really aggressive and the 27.5 wheels feel at least somewhat familiar (29 felt massive to me lol.) I've been absolutely loving it and luckily I live in Seattle where trails are a plenty and work about 10 minutes away from Duthie Hill which is basically a purpose built progression training ground. Riding MTB is amazing (and healthy.) Really glad I took the plunge. I guess this turned into a bit of a rant lol. But the reason I even started writing this was because I love how many older dudes (and dudettes) you see on the trails. People in their 40s and 50s are a plenty and send stuff that terrifies me on the regular. Having an active hobby that you can do at an extremely high level later in life is amazing. Hell I'm sure you could ride XC in your 60s and even 70s if you took great care of your body There's not many outdoor activities that you can do for so long in life. It's just a great, healthy hobby that really everyone should try at least once. Happy to have a new obsession. Less happy that I know it's only a matter of time before I have to set my wallet on fire to pick up a proper full suspension (though for the time being, the "all mountain" hardtail I'm on is a champ. The bug will come for my bank account eventually haha. Also happy to have yet another MTB KZfaq channel to checkout. Seems like the type of people this hobby attracts (and similarly disc golf) are just good people trying to help each other share the stoke. It's really cool that you made a whole series targeted at the over 40 crowd. The whole idea of safely progressing and being methodical about how you do it in order to be safe about it is brilliant.

Thanks to this video, I got a dirt jumper! Never had one before (never had a BMX either). Finished building it 2 weeks ago. I had no choice but to buy a good steel frame (evil faction 2) and a nice fork (pike DJ), because everything else was sold out. With a good set of wheels, the build easily cost north of $2k. Sooo worth it though! A few seshs on the DJ and the skills/confidence transferred right over to the local MTB black diamond trail, which I had struggled to ride on my 29” hardtail. The other day, I rode it more than half a minute faster than I ever have, no joke! I’m so thankful that you started this channel, Alex! I attended Lee’s clinic a couple months ago, who told me about this channel. I’ve watched so many of your videos ever since. Seriously the best bike channel on KZfaq. Hope all is well with you 🙏

I've got a dirt jumper and a trail hardtail. Both Steel, both really heavy. The trail hardtail has 120mm travel and my Dirtjumper 100mm. My trail bike has 27.5" wheels and my dirtjumper has 26" wheels. My trail Hardtail isn't even much heavier, but I rode them both in the Bikepark, dirtpark and on a Pumptrack on the same day, and those 27.5" wheels are so much worse on the Pumptrack and so on. So yes, even if you have a short travel Hardtail, you need a Dirtjumper

40yo just getting back into riding after a 10 year hiatus, i bought a 2nd hand Downhill MTB running oldschool 26inch wheels, a 2014 Kona Entourage. Was a pretty tight budget but the componentry & shocks were mint & then the upgrades i had to make have made a really awesome bike, particularly the Magura MT5 brakes, they are absolutely amazing! So much power & modulation! Anyway I'm looking at getting a DJ bike to improve my skills for DH- pumping, berms & jumping.. This video got me sold! I just wish we had a decent Dirt Jump & pump track! We have lift access trails 10 mins drive from centre of town & lots of free single-track downhill, (Christchurch NZ) but no Dirt Jump facility yet, so I'll mostly be practicing pumping at the skate park, maybe dropping into some bowls (wish me luck) and pumping at a BMX racing track.. We should have a proper DJ park in a couple of years tho, & maybe one day I'll get good enough to hit Gorge Road in Queenstown! That would be a dream! Awesome video btw, you explained alot and the stoke is real!

I don’t have access to a pump track, or a dirt jump park. But I bought a Marin Alcatraz last year and ride it on my local trails (that are peppered with jumps). I love the change up from my usual trail bike in that it’s more challenging and way more fun on the jumps. I also take it out pretty often for urban rides with my MTB hopper ramp. The neighborhood becomes your local bike park on a DJ and a portable ramp!

Good stuff. I am lucky to have a bike park in my city that Jay Hoots a longtime Norco rider built a few years ago. I don’t go often enough but the progression is real after some time spent on the pump track and jumps. I have a dirt jumper but the rear wheel is currently on life support after having a close encounter with a picnic table. I am definitely going to get it fixed now. I thought about using my son’s BMX bike because he makes it look easy but I am sure that will just result in my quick but painful death. Another benefit is the amount of exercise you get doing this with any bike but like Lee said it is way more rad on a dirt jumper and if it is fun you will do it more often. Riding a few laps on a long pump track is like doing high intensity interval training. You asked about what else we would like to see so here goes. I have a drop that is on quite a downhill section of trail. It is only about 3 feet high but it scares the crap out of me every time I do it. The front wheel wants to drop immediately and I end up riding further back on the bike but it makes controlling the bike that much harder on landing. Any thoughts on what might make it easier? Thanks again for another great video.
@JoyOfBike
@JoyOfBike 3 жыл бұрын
Laughing at the BMX comment. The BMX is amazing but it is a harsh teacher so the wheel fix probably the way to go. Without seeing it and riding it. (And I might not even want to hit is after seeing it.) : ) it is hard to say. Getting back and getting re-centered on a drop that size is really hard. happens so fast. And landing back on the bike no bueno. I think if you could land front wheel first comfortably then you could stay centered and in a low hinge on the bike to get full range of motion of your arms. If your arms extend fully and stop they pull your head and that is always scary. So a super low hinge would mitigate that. Best guess without seeing it.

This was great to stumble on! I'm in Colorado and recognized flat irons right away. Good old Valmont! Also I think the Graham in this video is the same Graham I've ridden with. I think I also saw Eric in here! I dig the video and the humor! Thank you ❤ see you guys out there! I still gotta try that new pump track!

I got a dirt jumper a few months ago after riding big bikes for most my career, and holy crap. Its amazing! I find myself gravitating towards my dirt jumper for every single ride, even in hilly Seattle. But I've learned so much on my dirt jumper and met lots more people as well. So if your on the fence, BUY ONE IF YOU CAN!!!

Love this!! There's something special about a hardtail bike, the feedback & responsiveness become addictive quickly & in my opinion make the big bikes even more fun when you hop back on! Enjoy the ride my friend!

My local dirt jumps have been very dry lately and we have had a decent rain season, which has rutted it, so ours aren't concrete smooth and my BMX handles it okay at lower tire pressure, but I wish I had bigger wheels and something to take the edge off small bumps in the pump roll in sections.

I live in two sticks Idaho falls, and finally after 46 years of living here. We've been given a little land for a dirt jump park and it gets better. 2022 we got a mountain bike park located in town! The dirt jump park is getting a new pump track as soon as the money to build it comes together. I have an OM Duro xl, and a fast Ripper. Both are a lot of fun to ride! But I am thinking that I have to buy the YT Industry's DIRTLOVE!!! well, possibly two of them. So I will have a backup dirt jump bike, just incase...

@lee_likes_bikes
@lee_likes_bikes 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tam! I consider myself an expert on pain in general and joint pain in particular. - If a joint hurts, do not stress it. That is super bad news, and pushing it can cause way more damage. For more info, ask my shoulders. - If it's a medical issue, see a QUALIFIED professional. Notice the capital letters. Here in Boulder we have the best: REVO Physiotherapy and Sports Performance. - If you don't have a medical issue, mazel tov. In that case, focus on your mobility and mechanics. For a nice primer on how to jump, check this out: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lbhirauX39etfoU.html - Focus on making your ankles as sot as possible. I hope this helps! Lee
