In "Jumping a mountain bike" I'm joined by my good friend Coulter. Coulter is new to jumping his mountain bike and I want to help. Coulter shreds the trail experience but like a lot of us, he is a beginner when it comes to jumps. He has some great progression moving from the jumping the small line and then moving up to jumping the large line but all progression suddenly stops when the positive vibes stop flowing. A positive attitude for beginners is probably even more important than for experienced rides. It's difficult for beginners because they get so much advice from other mountain bikers and that can be discouraging if the advice is just, "send it bro!"
A better-for-you snack company Coulter's wife Kristy founded that he helped launch:
www.quinnsnacks.com/
A brilliant, lawn care company that Coulter recently founded:
www.getsunday.com/

There is this pressure on 40ish riders (like I am) to progress on riding skills bec we don't have that much time. But we tend to forget that it's all about having fun and hanging out with friends.

fcdelacruz22 YES!! This would make a great episode. I started this channel with the name “Over the Hills” I liked it but I noticed me it was adding pressure as in my life is running out of time. Sheesh. So I changed it to Joy of Bike. As we say often when people are worried about keeping up or holding us back on a ride. “All rides are social.” Period.

Yeah. I got into riding the local pump track. I’m 49. Firstly a little uncomfortable around the teenagers but they are all really great kids.The advice can be a bit overwhelming and confusing though! They don’t judge on age. They accept everyone is there for fun and are really kind.

I wish I'd found this 15years ago. I have avoided jumps most of my riding life, I can never get it to click. In fact over the last 5 years I've had several accidents that have taken me of the bike for long periods. I'd come to the conclusion that jumping wasn't for me. Until I found your channel that is... Having watched your pump track video, I went to our local pump track and came off. Now having physio on my right shoulder. I'm 53 by the way and no intentions of quitting.

You can get this if you don’t rush it. Rushing creates the injuries that keep us off the bike. Make friends with a nice tabletop and give yourself a year to get comfortable with it. Same thing on the pumptrack. You have 4 years before your even my age. : ) Plenty time.

Really like this one and can relate 100%. I have EXACTLY the same problems your friend is having on the jumps. At my age, the consequences are just too high to rush it. So I get the reps in every single time I hit the trails. Slow and steady. Positive but not "send it man" confident.

When I was a kid, maybe 14, I remember the first time I faced a dirt jump, it was a hack, very improvised jump and I had a very cheap bmx bike, I remember heading towards it without fear and going over the big hole in the middle, I crashed a few times at first but the moment I did it the first time and felt the weightlessness at the top of the jump I understood what it was all about, and I started to crave that fraction of a second when all vertical forces equalled zero. But it was the crew what made it special, everyone was cheering for me and celebrating my progress. Then I started uni and then got a job, and then one day I realized it's been over 15 years since the last time I faced a giant, nowadays I don't even have a bmx anymore, though I'll be buying one in the upcoming months, been riding on my trusty gravel bike with a mtb handlebar and I've realized I can't even bunnyhop anymore, your videos been helping me get into it and learning a bit of the technique I wish I understood during my short stint in the past millenium, but now you make me wonder if the lack of a crew supporting me is a bigger factor than what I thought on what's been stunting my growth and recovering the confidence of the early days. Thanks.

I have been subscribed to Kyles channel for a few months now and just found yours. Love his stuff and it has helped me, but watching someone "older" helps my mental game and I like the way you break the skills down. I rode dirt bikes my whole life and got into MTB around '90 with a Trek 850... Stopped doing any of it after my son was born 14 years ago. Started getting back into it 5 years ago with him in Mammoth of all places. Now with COVID, we both have new used full sus bikes and are hitting the locals every weekend. One thing never ever do the following when learning or trying to progress. 1. Try to learn more than one thing at a time. 2. Move on till you are 100% with 1. Going to the large jumps when the small jumps were not right has actually pushed you back. You won't do the big jumps till the smaller ones are good technique. Also don't go from 3 foot to 10 foot since medium line was out then the day was done rather work the small line and make them perfect.
@WilliamSurles
@WilliamSurles 2 жыл бұрын
Sheesh, going from the small line to that large jump is ridonkulous. Props for your buddy being brave enough to even go case that. I've spent days on the smalls and mediums and the mental strength it takes to push it up a notch is not an easy thing. (But thats probably because I didn't see your jump tutorials yet) : )

My struggle is fear, I grew up racing BMX and jumps were nothing, now being 41 I have developed this fear to only jumping yet want to jump so badly!!! I'm fast downhill and comfortable riding overall, I do well when accidentally led into the unknown. What I want is you to come to Georgia and help and what I need is you to come to Georgia to help me get past this and progress!!! Lol, no really your videos are great and I think helpful for most. Going to start applying your techniques and positive vibe to my routine! Keep it up

This feels so much like me: I can even see the same jump not going as I wanted.. But you know what? This is what helps me understand and motivates me to go out there another day and try again. I like to learn from my mistakes and, more importantly, from others mistakes because we are all humans and not just we all do mistakes but we often make similar mistakes. It's a learning process, everyone learns differently, but learning together helps our progression. Mountain bike is an amazing sport and Alex, your videos prove it through and through! This is where i am currently on my jump progression, i keep coming back to the jump line and practicing. Every single time i try to find zen and push harder. If you find that you are getting exhausted then relax and save for another day and pick up where you left off. This was my lesson learned after a landing on my front wheel, poping it and launching like a catapult (ps falls and wipes are all part of the learning and fun)

Fantastic vids. You both improve each other thus making us improve riding & attitude. I'm 62 just took up mountain biking & bought my first MT bike last month. Only rode 2 times on trails so far. Watching your videos has made the riding from the first time to the second time a 100% improvement in body position & 100% improvement in looking at the trail in a positive mode. If that makes sense? I ride with a girl who has rode for 10+ years. "We used your vids on sizing my next mountain bike" and she finally found out why she hated her 6 year old Men's Small current bike it was 13cm to long with the short ladder test. She's waiting for her new bike to come in. 1 thing I ask of you is everybody told me to pick MY LINE & RIDE IT when riding on the trail. If I don't know how to pick an f-ing line then how can I f-ing ride it? Could you do a vid on picking the correct line? Then how to ride it? I know old guy long winded comment sorry.

Great question. I have had this same feeling. I remember a sign for side country skiing with a skull and cross bones. So scary but the skiing was great. Small, medium, green, blue are generally very rollable. Large/expert/XL/black is when you might encounter non rollable features. The best way to be comfortable is to do it once as a sighting lap. Then begin to pick off the features one by one.

No issues with assembly for me kzfaq.infoUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L but I could see where some might benefit from using an experienced bike assembler/mechanic. I'm an older rider starting back after a 10 year break. This bike exceeds my capabilities and has been easy to get comfortable riding. I'm mostly on easy trails with almost no street riding and have not been disappointed with the performance of the bike. My fitness level is far below what I previously rode with and because of that the mileage is going on the bike slowly. While I'm losing weight slowly, the bike seems to tolerate my 220 pounds just fine. The bike has been used by several family members ranging from 5'5" - 5'9".
