In my opinion Midgets and Sprites should be a lot more popular than they are. These little moderately priced classics are an absolute joy to drive.
Those that criticise them and make them the butt of a joke are very unlikely to have ever driven one.
Chance made me buy mine back in January 1981, it's been rebuilt a couple of times. It's basically a standard Mk1 Midget, with the original Engine an 1098cc A series, an engine with the smaller crank bearing and less well aspirated smaller bore exhaust and manifold as fitted at the time. She's always flown along and accelerates nicely. I change the oil possibly more often than most, but the engine has lasted well and been driven hard.
Being a latter make one it has disc brakes on the front.
if you get the chance go for a drive in one, you're pretty much guaranteed to smile.

Much appreciated Teekay 😎👍I love the tonneau cover, with it on the passenger side the heater and cover provide a really nice warm air pocket, even in winter. Of course your ears, nose and hands still freeze LOL. Just come back from a 1400 mile round trip to the Scottish Highlands in it 9 days with the tonneau and 1 day with the hood up, rained hard 2 days, driving a paddling pool is interesting 😁

I have owned a Midget for almost 40 years, which must say something. I have also inherited another from my father. You don't drive a Midget; you wear it. The ones I have are a 1500 (That's the one I have had nearly 40 years), to which I fitted an overdrive box and the other is a RWA 1275. I'd like to have a try in a sidescreen Midget, to see what that quarter elliptic rear end is like (It gave the "Donkey" in the van short shrift). I am hoping to take the 1500 out soon (Just been changing the rubber petrol pipes and giving it the once over underneath, whilst it's on the ramp), as it's had little use since before the pandemic, the start of which coincided with my father's illness.

I love the feel of the Mk1 but then it's the one I know best. I also totally agree with wearing the car, to me it is part of the joy of the Spridgets, just adding to the feel of the drive. Sorry to hear that the pandemic had such adverse effects on your father. I lost both my folk during, part of the reason I did Route 66 in a Midget enjoy while you can 👍

@@johnnywarnerperfectroad66 Although my father died during the pandemic, it was nothing to do with the pandemic. Infact, prior to his illness making itself known, lockdown had a perversely positive effect, in that my business received an unexpected boost and since leisure was curtailed, I had more time to get on with various jobs I had on the go. I think I'd use the 1500, with it's overdrive, for Route 66 (Though I have my father's BGT V8 and my mother still has her BGT, both of which would be well suited). I take the point that procrastination is the thief of time!!

Over drive in the 1500 is lovely I agree, my wife's Herald has a 1500 Dolomite engine with overdrive, that I took on a 1200 mile return trip up to the Scottish Highlands, so lovely on big roads and quiet when you click in the overdrive. If I could fit one easily into my Morris minor I would. However, the fit around Midget is hard to beat and nothing corners like it. I've just posted snippets of a 5000 mile trip from Hopkinsville Kentucky, up to Chicago and over to Santa Monica then back, all in a bog standard 1275cc Mk3 , we found it good in it's off road mode.

@@johnnywarnerperfectroad66 I also have a Minor (Traveller) and have been working on it this morning. I also think the torquey 1500 engine and box would be good but I'll stick to the 1275 and Ford Type 9 box, as both are in good order (And I've done my share of mods). Owen Burton details how to fit an overdrive box to a Minor (The Triumph box is closely related to the Marina box) and I must dig out his book. In my opinion, the Triumph box is the nicer to use but the Ford one does it's job. I will soon be fitting a new clutch and at the same, time getting a shorter remote and a drain plug for the box (Both developments became available after my car went five speed). Since I have cars, with taller gearing, I won't be fitting a 5 speed to the RWA car, not least as I like that A Series box so much (And I have a spare).

I bought a 1960 Bugeye Sprite in 1970, and a Mk III Sprite in about 74. Australian delivered so rust free, but came with all the A Series, SU and Lucas foibles. I have now gone to the dark side with my current model MX5, and sadly, don't miss the Sprites one bit. Call me shallow.😊

Each to their own Timothy and obviously the Frogeye 🐸 couldn't have been too disappointing or you wouldn't have purchased the Mk3 Midget.... MX5 certainly a fun car with aspects of the Midget, but modern comfort and reliability. Hopefully out in My Midget today with a smile on my face, loving every minute of it as I have for a long time... My only issue getting out is becoming harder 😅👍 Have a great day Johnny

Matthew you sound my kinda guy 👍. But I would argue none of those trips are pointless. Yes there is a small Yucca and the large one I believe is a Hardy Fan Palm they are OK to -10c, more common in Cornwall and Devon where the Golf stream brings warmer air. People here like that sunny climate look. You take a risk and normally a challenge but some folk very good at it and create a bit of a micro climate. I prefer driving on the right side in Britain too and obviously I mean the left by that 🤣👍
