I am not a racist and don't mean to make it sound racist/discriminative, but in Japan, though foreigners speaking Japanese are kind of appreciated and surprised at, those "foreigners" often don't include Asians, especially Chinese and Koreans.
At first, of course Japanese people may be surprised to hear Chinese/Korean speak Japanese well, but it's not so "interesting/weird/awkward/mismatch" (meaning they often look alike Japanese, thus looking wise, it is just the same as a Japanese speaking Japanese).
However, if someone from the West, especially those who look western (with lighter-colored skin not necessarily white but also tan, or Latino-looking incudes, too) speaks Japanese, it looks very "different" to Japanese.

I really understand what you are saying about speaking Japanese. I speak a little, and in my home town in Canada I was able to give a group of Japanese tourists directions, in broken Japanese, to a museum. I have never seen people so impressed for something so small! It was so cute, they even asked to take their picture with me.

Thank you so much for the insight to Japanese culture and as expected I can understand why there would be a barrier between cultures. It wasn't racist in the slightest besides I think everyone who watched your video just wanted to hear the honest truth about the culture's view on foreigners. Oh and by the way you are a very good speaker your English is Spot on! :)

Hey I found your video on the offchance and found it to be very interesting! I'm currently in Australia but originally from Switzerland. Even when I lived in Switzerland, it seemed that quite a number of the teenagers (as was my age) wanted to go to Japan. I've been learning how to read Japanese as well as culture over the past few years and plan to make the trip this December. Hopefully I can make things pleasant for the Japanese people by speaking a bit of Japanese. どうもありがとう

Very informative perspective here. Kouhei, would you say that English is one of hardest languages to learn as a Japanese person compared to languages like Korean, Russian, and Arabic? Or is English an easier language to learn than the ones I mentioned? I ask because there was a study that stated that pure English speakers would find Asian languages the hardest to learn, while other European languages are easier. I want to know if Japanese people have a similar difficulty.

What if say, I an American, wanted to direct samurai dramas (with a touch of romance) for the Japanese straight to video market? I am struggling with the language, but until I saw your video the basic idea I had come across is why would Japan want a foreigner to do a Japanese thing...the comments you make towards the end of your video make it seem like this might be possible though. Just curious.

The reason why if you go to America and not be considered "famous" or have "Special Treatment" is because America is so diverse. Americans are used to seeing all races and all people of different skin colors and what not. There are people who will love you for being from another country and/or speak more than one language, because the culture is so interesting. Japan is a country of its own originality. Sure Japan has some Western influences, but its own history is alive & well. :)

The nice thing about America is that we love foreigners lol! I think we may be the most accepting of foreigners, we love to teach them our culture and language and such. And it's fascinating and interesting also :D I love to learn about other cultures and languages. I'm over 5 different races. I can understand how it can seem quite disrespectful if foreigners go to Japan or anywhere, and don't understand their culture or language, well the language is a bit difficult but at least the culture.

yes, you can use the Word 'complex' as a noun, but if describing a group of builds or structures. Example: "There is a snake loose in this huge building Complex; so, we are having complications finding it." yea, the English language is confusing. haha! Very few Americans speak 'correctly' so it's not a big deal. And yes, America is similar to what I've learned about Japan, If its a big city people will except a foreigner. But if its a small place, they will not like you so much.

I find it funny that many Japanese people think Americans don't know how to use chopsticks. I think about half of America knows how to use chopsticks as we have 割り箸 in every single Chinese and Japanese restaurants in the US. Particularly we have A LOT of Chinese take-out places and buffets. I learned to use chopsticks as a child. Most Americans have learned to use them by the time they are a teenager. Although some struggle, I am willing to bet it's the minority.

I really don't see Japan as closed relative to any other country, however places like Western Europe have a lot of exposure to other cultures and races so are more familiar with foreigners. While the west has a lot of open border advocates, racists are just as prevalent, and they're much more violent. I'd much rather be a foreigner in Japan than KSA or South Africa.

05:21 I think what you were trying to say here was that most Japanese have the "westerners complex" or the "American complex". This is the same here in the Philippines, where everyone thinks white people are great and cool. The only difference here is that Filipinos were able to embrace the American culture and language, whilst Japanese were able to control foreign influence by distancing themselves in keeping the cultures and traditions intact.

Furthermore, Koreans never threaten Japanese citizens in Korea. However, this is a daily occurrence in Japan. If you wish to be a civilized country, you must learn how to treat foreigners and those who have become naturalized citizens equally. Otherwise you're nothing more than a banana republic. If your country decides to go "鎖国" again like it did in the 1930's under 東條 英機, you're going to have serious problems.

Well the thing is , the report isn't controversial because most scientists and engineers agree with it. Western Europe was in in its prime 200 years ago, during the middle ages Europe was a very primitive place compared to China. All empires rise and fall. Most experts predict that the way things are going the East will eventually rise above the west once again. A new paradigm shift.

So if you wanted to say "Asians have a hard time dealing with westerners" , then you would say "Asians have 'Complications' dealing with westerners, which lead to 'confrontations'." :) its ok. thats the same in America. We welcome any & all foreigners with open arms, its just we angry with people who can speak the language. But you English is really good so people would like you.

Well Japans success is a recent paradigm that's why i started from the year 2k. Like i said earlier Greece, Italy and France haven't accomplished a great deal over the last 200 years, the experts agree that the Brits, Americans and Japanese are responsible for the most of the world modern inventions. You are a layman who doesn't really know what he is talking about, if French people are smarter than Japanese then why are their cars statistically less reliable than Japanese designs?
