One unique area to visit while in Ocean city, Maryland is called Assateague Island. Its a 37 mile long island that covers Maryland and part of Virginia. Once you pay the $20 admission ($20 gives you a week pass) you can go to the beaches, fish, go crabbing or camping. The highlight of the island is encountering some of the wild horses & ponies that roam the island. So come along with me as i show what you can expect at this one of a kind island. Enjoy

the big flies are horse flies. they hurt when they bite you. and the reason they are called that is thats the only place you find them is where the horses are. great video

Seeing the horses run and be free is awesome ! I saw the same when I was in North Carolina ... they get so close and it's so hard not to pet them, but of course you can't. I could have just watched them for hours, they are so peaceful and beautiful. Great video !

How beautiful. The wild horses are descendants of horses from a Spanish shipwreck. I guess they still round them up once a year and auction off some of them to keep the numbers of them down on the island.

We camped there a few years ago for ten days in the fall. It was gorgeous. No bugs not a lot of people, and the horses were out and moving every day. The only shot I wasn't getting was a pony on the beach with the water behind him/her. Finally, on our last full day, it happened. We found a band in the dunes and I shot them for hours. I still wasn't getting them to go down to the actual beach though, so we left that band near sunset and came across another band that was on the actual beach. I finally got the shots I wanted. None of them went in the water though, so I have to do a return trip. Thanks for the trip down memory lane though. We really love that place.

They look like Quarter horses. The white with brown one could be a 'Paint' and the others look like Bay and darker gold appears to be Palomino colors . We used to have Quarter horses years ago and yes, those horse flies will take a chunk out of you to the point you will bleed.

As someone who spent four summers working at Assateague Island National Seashore directly with the management and conservation of the horses, I would like to correct you on the birth control section of your video. The stallions are never castrated. Castration would entail capturing the horse and having to sedate them, probably in a livestock squeeze chute. The horses on the Maryland side of Assateague are not captured or touched by park staff for any reason. The mares are darted with an immuno-contraceptive called Porzine Zona Pellucida (PZP) for birth control. The contraception is the only human intervention in the horses' lives. However, you are right about the after one foaling part. Mares are darted when they are 1, 2, and 3 so they have some more time to mature before they foal. Contraception stops when they turn 4 years old and is not resumed till she has had a foal and weaned it. The mare is then darted with the contraceptive annually to hopefully prevent any more pregnancies. PZP is an immuno-contraceptive though meaning it is a protein that works naturally with the mare's body to suppress pregnancy. It does not stop her from going through her natural cycles of heat and she will still breed, it is just less likely she will conceive. However, PZP is 95% effective there is always a 5% chance the mare will still get pregnant. We get surprise foals from mares being darted annually every year. The contraceptive management is needed for population control because horse are invasive to the barrier island environment.

@@JPVideos81 Fair enough. Our Boy Scout troop is planning an Assateague bike and kayak camp out next summer so we'll get to see that herd. We did a week long kayak in trip around Pamlico Sound a couple of years ago, and the horses on Shackleford banks didn't get anywhere near us. I guess they get fed enough at Assateague they now expect it.

Such an informative video thank you! I love your daughters hair! I have read alot about mosquitos. How bad are the Mosquitos? I had an accident and have not recovered due to complicated health issues. I cant walk on unpaved ground and I can only walk with a 4 pronged cane holding onto my husband. With my limited mobility what is the likelihood I can see horses without actually walking on the beach or grass?
@JPVideos81

There arent too bad with bugs. Many people can see the horses from their cars. I was here over the winter the year prior and the horses were 2 ft away from our car. Just depends on where they decide to roam to.

What a beautiful day you had for this! It’s lovely to see you out with your family, your daughter is cute and looks a lot like her Daddy. It’s great to see you taking photographs and videos and making memories with your lovely wife and daughter. She’s not too many years away from being grown up and going to college, and she’ll have the videos and photographs to remind her of special moments with Mom and Dad. Oh, how the years seem to fly by when you get older, don’t they? Thank you so much for sharing some of your summer outings with us. I enjoy your channel very much. Thanks JP. 💕
