The construction of the mods to the Bug body is fascinating. Your end result is something to be so proud of. I watch your videos over and over, pausing often to take in as much as I can. I am floored by what you achieve. I am reassembling my '73 Beetle after a new paint job. Keep up with the videos. From Durban, South Africa.

Your Subaru powered bug would be so fun to own and drive. With that said, I spent lots of the early 1980's pulling my high compression 1835 engine out of my Cal-look bug after blowing it or the transmissions up! lol. Watching all the work you have to do to remove that engine and it's transmission makes me appreciate my now bone stock VW bugs. Pulling an engine out of them in my 50's is a piece of cake. Of course, I rarely pull them anymore due to the reliability of the bone stock engines running all the original, restored German parts. Amazing how reliable and dependable these cars were. No wonder VW sold so many of them.

I raced shockproof for years in my gearboxes, but since replacing syncros was way more of an issue then bearings, got switched to schaffer V-twin primary lube. Way better. As you say, Shockproof is too slippery for the syncros, shockproof superlight didn't hold up, and the shaeffer stuff seems to do it all. It has a property that actually enhances the syncros, while the base stock does fine for all other components.

As complex as THIS project has become for you, for what it took for you to get at that 5th gear broken part, seems relatively straight a forward job, by comparison to what I had to do to just reseal the oil pan & dipstick rod’s mounting flange of my stock 7.3L Powerstroke engine in my 2000 F-250 4x4 Lariat! THAT had me really WANTING to sell it several times over!!! What a nightmare! Anyways, awesome mod-build of your Suba-VW; have watched all of your vid’s & always impressed… I suppose if every car made had this amount of engineering thought invested in it, they’d all be priced at now less then $100K each

Seem like it takes a while to get used to the shifting. She didn't make it past 5th and it ended kind of quick so seems possible. *Edit nvm I heard you explain the thought as to why Really brilliant build here, you really knocked it out of the park! @@chrisallen9154 Unfortunately. I'd like to run two different oils in my Audi, but the trans axle prevents that. I run that same Shockproof Redline in my Ford Toploader transmission, shifting seems ok, believe gear noise is the same. Subaru transmissions have documented issues with 5th gear, but not with baulk rings that I'm reading until the later 6 speed boxes. I'd almost vote to have the gears matched no baulk ring at all. You can go back to what Subaru uses in there gear boxes for oil likely might help, or have someone make a steel baulk rings with carbon facings?

@@JohnReynolds661 Your reply is 'witty' and clever as usual. Very good. And the second also, a good response. From the initial request, it was not clear to me, if he meant the Corvair V-8-LS4 or the original 6 cylinder, air cooled - somewhat similar with the Porsche 6 cylinder 'boxter' engine Though from his later reply to You second reply, it seems he intended the LS4 with mentioning "VW v8" and after Your Corvair. It seems this fellow is unaware that others have already accomplished LS4 swaps into the Corvair, similarly, some with single, others with twin turbochargers. Yours is certainly unique and grand to follow, with Your specific selections, choices, fabrication, suspension, etc. Which ECU have You selected John ? my personal interest would be a supercharged, however my location abroad has such extreme restrictions with motor vehicles, access to these older ones especially, certainly more so with any parts, engines, transmissions, drive train, all necessary parts, components, fabrication equipment, materials along with the space, locations to accomplish these projects. Thus, it basically is nearly impossible without extreme expense with acquiring all that is necessary along with arranging the shipment and location. This also would require the necessary planning for nearly every detail from the beginning, as You can imagine and figure. Anything not included, prepared, planned, expected or arranged will result in significant delays, and costs. For me, it is easier to approach projects which involve electronics, which are more accessible, attainable, though some limitations exist within this too, especially compared with in the USA. Taiwan based manufactures are very good to excellent and shipping is attainable, along with from Japan too. Though all still have significant importation duties + Taxes [VAT 17%] added after duties added onto total price. Vehicles have the highest duty of 100% + VAT it would be nice and delightful to also haves such motor vehicle projects. There are many which are within my imagination, for design, development, including some very useful which combine several developments together. Am looking forward toward more of Your posts with this VW Bug project and the Corvair Project also.
