In this episode, I review JS Big Baron. This is the next level of high performance mid-lengths.
A pulled in round tail makes it very easy to turn with a solid hold through the turns. JS Big Baron hits all the boxes in terms of wave range and conditions. I’m very excited to share this episode with you.
Like, drop a comment, subscribe to my channel if you like my reviews. This will help this channel to grow.
Enjoy this episode!
Much love, Yury.

I have the 6 8 version of this and am loving it. You a right to point out the sensitivity of the rails, definitely more of a shortboarders midlength rather than a full cruiser. Great drive around sections. Mine is holding up ok in terms of deck compressions. Fins wise I have been using the futures uprights js make for the board, pricey but super light and they go great. Thanks for the reviews!

Great review - Your channel rocks because I can relate as an average everyday surfer myself. Watching a pro surfing world class waves to show off a new board, dosent tell me how the board will work in average conditions. A pro can make any board look like a magic stix. Also, a person standing in a shop reviewing a board going through the spec sheet doesnt really tell me a lot more than the manufacturers website. The fact you take the board out into the waves at the same spot in weak and average conditions makes for a better review. I can tell a lot more about a board from your reviews. Keep it up. I hope the brands throw you some more boards to review. Yeeeew!

Briefly mentioned on your Album Moonstone review that I'd recently bought a 6'8" Big Baron with Futures EN fins. Usually ride a 5'8 firewire mashup, or Seaside (I'm 5'10" and 160lbs, so similar to you). At first, the baron felt massive and slow to react through turns, but I guess that's just relative to what I was used to, and, I don't think my back foot was far enough back. So far used it 3 times, generally in 3ft and fairly clean conditions. Definitely loving it now. It picks up waves a fair bit easier than the mashup, and has that addictive glide on takeoffs you simply don't get with a shorter board, likewise over flatter spots on the wave. On an open face, there's so much drive through swooping carves, and it cuts back really nicely. Overall it feels smooth, fast, flowy, yet with some bite and performance from the tail. Can sort of duck dive it, but obviously you can still take a beating on bigger waves, as I can't get it down very deep. Still need to figure out how well it will go in more top to bottom style turns...am tempted to take it to the Wave pool to see how it gets on there, although one collision with the wall will be trouble!

Yuri, nice review , enjoying your regular guy reviews I’ve got a Big Baron, 7’6” 50 liters ( I’m 200 lbs and 60 years old “) You are on the money, a really fun MIdlength, fast ,maneuverable, thinned out so you can still duckdive it. It is an excellent board if you want a bigger board that still will perform As you stated the glassing seems a bit weak. I dinged the rail with my shin on my second session pulling into a closeout. I’m using the Merrick keels ( the ones they use in the Fishbeard) and have been happy with those. I m more of a swoop/carve, drive through sections guy All in all pretty happy with the Big Baron

I picked up mine a few weeks back and theres some magic in this board that allows it to perform in a way I didn’t expect for a board of this outline and size. I’m an intermediate plus surfer in his mid 30’s. My job is sit down and so I’m a bit stiff and popping up has become a bit slow. I got the 6’8 higher volume and I’m 6’3 90kg. The board is super easy to pop up on and has incredible drive through turns. I have been doing full roundhouse cutbacks and I haven’t done them in yrs with this consistency if I’m honest with myself. Fins- modern Keels are great on point break style waves. I haven’t tried a more upright twin yet and looking forward to that. If I had my time again I’d order the low volume 7’0. Falling in love with twins.

@@SkipperSurfReview yeah it’s a great board. Btw your reviews are great for most surfers. I’d love to hear if anyone tries the following fins in this board as an fcs option. @@Petepato3 go the 7’0, it’ll be a crowd beater with great drive and still easy to turn. If your going for a mid length may as well do it properly. I have smaller performance boards for good waves when I want to surf harder. I’ve since ridden a similar style board, 7’6 Twin and it’s still manoeuvrable and even more paddle power etc. If you have a shorter more performance board, go the 7’6 even. If not, go the 7’0 or 7’6

@SkipperSurfReview
@SkipperSurfReview 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, Sam. To be honest, I can't really compare them. If we take 7'0 JS Big Baron and 7'0" Firewire Sunday, they basically have 10 liters difference in volume plus the rails on Sunday are very beefy comparing to JS Big Baron. You won't get as much performance out of Sunday. However the Helium makes it very responsive in some ways but it still comes with a lot of work that you have to put into the turns. I personally like Sunday in shorter size 5'9". I will review it soon. Cheers!

Great review! Curious to hear your thoughts on the Big Baron vs Lovelace FM seeing as they are both similar in length and fin set-up.
@SkipperSurfReview
@SkipperSurfReview 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Brian, thanks for watching. So, I've met Ryan Lovelace not a while ago where we talked about all of his models. Unfortunately the audio didn't work well otherwise I would share it online. Basically, the FM model was meant to be surfed in big waves like shoulder high -> overhead+ where the twinzer set up will fully kick in and start working at it's potential like my FM board which I got from Glide Surf Shop. It was specifically shaped for these conditions. He was actually impressed that it worked in small waves for me. LOL. My 6'5" FM feels heavier, the rails feel kinda the same (very refined), slightly less responsive on turns however it gets more speed once you put the pedal to the medal and more glide on the wave and the most important part it has an excellent glass job. It's a night a day compared to machine shaped JS Big Baron. I didn't surf FM in big waves yet, so it's supposed to give you a lot of power through wrapping cutbacks. I can't wait to feel it :) Cheers!

So how does this compare to the seaside and beyond? Which do you prefer? I was looking at getting the seaside but now not sure!
@SkipperSurfReview
@SkipperSurfReview 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Mike! I prefer Big Baron over Seaside and Beyond which feels very bulky, much harder to paddle and way slower to turn even if you set it up as twinny. The knifey rails on the Big Baron makes it really easy to do maneuvers and drive through the turns. It’s got all twin fin benefits. You don’t have to nurse it at all. I’m really impressed. If you surf shortboards and want something bigger to catch more waves and cover all range of conditions, then you will love it a lot. If you’re coming from a longboard and want to transfer to something shorter, then the Big Baron could be a great choice but your pop up should be really quick. It forgives less beginner surfer’s mistakes than Seaside and Beyond. Hope this helps🤙🏼

Hey! I only enjoy my 6'6" Dan Jones Twin Pin which is kind of in a mid length range. It all depends.. Mid lengths to help to catch waves easier but you have to sacrifice the performance in small waves. I just found a magic board Mini Super by Shea Somma that allows me to turn/catch easy tiny/small/medium size waves and have a lot of fun! You will be able to catch small waves on big baron. But if you have 1 ft wave and the board is 6'8" there is just no way to turn it quickly back to the pocket. It's just a lot of work. Hope this helps!
