Grafting fruit trees with lateral bark grafting or slit technique when you only have thin scions and larger diameter rootstocks or branches can be difficult when using more traditional grafting methods like cleft grafts.
Matching the cambiums can be tricky and you have to use 2 scions to fill the cleft gap and sometimes it isn’t enough leaving a hole in the middle. By using a lateral bark or Slit Grafting method those problems are gone.
Carefully matching cambiums isn’t needed and the top part of the rootstock or grafted branch can be kept, allowing for faster healing and the possibility of preserving the original variety.
Used in spring with dormant scions, on rootstocks or branches of established trees that are breaking bud, this technique should be in every grafter’s arsenal.
Give it a try on plums, peaches, pears, apples, for instance, but it will work on most types of fruit trees.

At 9:03 he checked to make sure the graft faced the right way - buds pointing up (away from the roots) on a scion with tiny buds. Good thought. Also, he later took away the parafilm so it was easier to show the camera the graft union. Usually, you won't need to take off parafilm. It will break down in less than a year, without girdling the graft union. I'm going to try this to make a two-variety plum this season. Lovely work you did; liking the rounded blade for tweeking the flap open.

@JSacadura
@JSacadura 4 жыл бұрын
That's right, you don't need to cut the branch to graft with this technique. Beware that you will have to progressively cut it, though, as the graft grows. If you don't do it, some grafts might fail, due to competition with other higher buds, in the grafted branch.

Easily the best grafting videos out there! I have done a lot of these but none have survived. I now know why i.e not using the aliminium (NZ spelling🤣) foil. I also liked how you manipulate the scion to whatever angle you want. It becomes the new lateral. Love it! Right... back at it I go. Cheers
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 4 жыл бұрын
Hi. This type of grafts can be a bit more tricky than others in the followup. First, you have to make sure they are well protected until the cambium has healed and afterwards you have to gradually remove the growth of other branches and buds from the rootstock or the competition will make them fail. But, when you graft, you can't just remove all that growth either, to maintain sap flowing. It's a tricky balance but with experience we get the hang of it.

@@JSacadura totally understand! here's a question i've been wanting some feedback on from experts. does it make any difference if i was to graft a dormant scion of a fruit variety that would have naturally already leafed out and flowering? would that scion that may be several weeks beyond its natural bloom time have any chance of taking? take peach for example. i know avocados being evergreen are more or less fine. my concern are the stone fruits or any fruit that has a winter chill period. or do you think it may not matter, so long as the sap is still flowing?
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 4 жыл бұрын
I regularly graft scions that have been in the fridge for several weeks/months. As long as the rootstock is moving sap, the scion takes without problem, even late in the season. Regarding its development, it will always be behind its normal development that first year and it might miss some of the normal stages of the natural cycle. It will resume the normal circle the second year, though. Furthermore, you wouldn't want it to flower and produce fruits the first year, as that would be detrimental to its normal growth, so that is not a concern.

Thank you for sharing this video. I especially like the technique of puncturing the opposite side and letting the scion poke through on the loquat to achieve a more horizontal attachment. On the other grafts, it looks like it will result in a narrow crotch. Do you have any problems with he narrow crotch later, or do you usually eventually remove the rootstock portion of the angle?

Absolutely superb, clear videos... thank you. Please can you help me? ........ I have some 3 year old espalier trained apples and pears which have some missing lower lateral branches. To create these missing branches I'd like to try July bud grafting but in most cases the root stock wood is much bigger and thicker than the scion. Would it be better to do a July lateral bark graft in these circumstances? Also, as I won't be cutting off growth above the missing lateral, would you recommend notching above the graft to encourage growth - and if so, would you notch in July or next Spring just before the sap starts to rise? Thank you. Regards John

I usually prefer to graft using dormant scion wood when i can. With a rootstock that is already moving sap and with a dormant scion the results are better for this techniques. In some cases the varieties i wanted to graft had already break dormancy when i received them, so i had to select the scions that showed the least developed buds.

@JSacadura 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Steven. Thanks for the comment. The Parafilm is a soft, wax based tape. When stretched over the scion the buds have no difficulty breaking through, so there is no need to remove the tape. When using plastic tape, the scion (the buds) should not be covered, only the grafting point or else you have to go to each graft after a couple of weeks and cut the tape, so the buds can get through.

@JSacadura
@JSacadura 4 жыл бұрын
Hi. its probably not a good idea to use breaking bud scions in lateral grafts as they might not have time to fuse vascular tissues and will run out of energy growing the leaves before they have a chance to do it. But if they are only slightly breaking and you have no alternative you can try it. The reason you don't see Almond air layering is not because is very difficult to do, but because almonds will grow much better grafted into selected disease resistant rootstocks. With all the problems with diseases in the soil that we often have in our orchards, if we don't choose a resistant rootstock (check this interesting article on how to choose the right one for you), we will probably are working for nothing, as the rooted tree will be much less productive or will,probably, end up dying.

What would be the best grafting technique to add an arm to an existing espalier Apple where there is a missing lower lateral branch. Tree is only 3 years old. Unsure if I should cut back the main trunk to the missing branch to encourage lateral to grow or it is possible to graft the missing branch into place with a bud or some of the new growth from higher up the tree. I have tried notching but no bud growth has appeared yet.
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Robert. Sorry for the late reply. I would use the lateral bark technique for that. Sometimes these grafts are not very strong and may have a narrow angle but, in an espalier tree, there will be support and you can progressively force the new branch into the right position. The problem could be the competition with the existing branches (it might make the new branch grow slower...)

Excellent Video ! I was wondering when to remove the para-film tape ? or is it better to use a razor blade and just remove a little of the tape when the new scion buds start to break ? also is there an optimum length and bud count on scion wood ? looks like your using about 6" long scion with maybe 3 or 4 buds. Thanks again for the great videos !
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I usually only remove the parafilm tape after several months of the graft being made. That's the beauty of this material. If you stretch it a bit and only apply one layer when going over a bud, the bud has no problem breaking it, with no damaged, whatsoever. So, unlike plastic grafting tapes, you can cover the buds and forget them, as its not necessary to cut any slots for the buds to break it. Regarding scion length. I try to use only 3-4 buds maximum. I don't like scions that are too long. i only use them a bit longer, when the lower buds appear damaged and i don't have any better ones to use (i tend to graft varieties that were sent to me by mail, so i have to work with what i receive and most times the scions are not ideal). For instance, the almonds scions had already break bud and were far from ideal, so i used them a bit longer than usual (4-5 buds).

@@JSacadura Thank you.. I would of never guessed the new bud growth would pierce the parafilm and continue to grow leaves..also would of never thought to cover with aluminum foil as that would block out all sunlight..i'm still trying to understand that.. Thanks again !
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 5 жыл бұрын
Check min. 16 of the chip-budding video - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nNyqkpqpyL21Y40.html Those buds have grown leaves like the parafilm was never there. Also, in min 16.30, you see why its important to maintain the aluminium film until the buds break through the parafilm. As it retains moisture, if its too hot and sunny, the parafilm can act as a greenhouse and the excessive heat can 'cook' the buds. That's why i recommend to open the aluminium foil after a couple of weeks, but keep it on the branch, shading the bud as an umbrella (the indirect light is enough for the buds to start growing). When the bud breaks the parafilm, the greenhouse effect doesn't happen, anymore, and the aluminium foil can be remobed completely. More images of the buds breaking the parafilm and removing the aluminium foil or paper bag protection, in this whip and tongue grafting video - min. 13.40 -16.00 - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kMmqfa11vdTWXaM.html

This Parafilm tape has a wax base and its biodegradable, so there really is no need to remove it. It stays on, enough time to protect the graft while its healing and the buds can push through it, without problem. If some pieces are still there, next season, i remove them so water doesn't accumulate below the tape and eventually promotes fungus growth.

In order to get 100% successful grafting, you have to select 1) early morning and best month 2) the age of scion and rootstock must match 3) cambian must meet 4)after grafting you must cover and protect the scion from the sun & bad weather 5)must select a strong rootstock. Notice not all KZfaq video don't tells you everything. Thank you for sharing your lateral grafting. Besides using parafilm, Is there another product to wrap your scion? I am curious to know if grafting a longer scion will be beneficial. I have seen videos of people grafting 5-6 inch scions, but never any longer branch. The bare root stock I buy from my nursery seems to graft a very long scion branch onto it, hence my question.
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 4 жыл бұрын
There is no advantage in grafting longer scions. I tend not to graft a scion with more than 3 buds. The scion will be a bit shorter or a bit longer depending on the space between the buds. In some cases, I only use 2 buds, so the scions are even shorter. Longer scions tend to fail more (they weight more and they can be used by birds as a perch so, if not well tied down strongly, they will break). The young trees, bought at the nurseries are usually grafted the year before. What seems like a longer scion is just the developed graft that, in vigorous varieties, can grow more than 1 meter since grafted.

That grafting tape it's called Parafilm. Check the manufacturer website (Bemis) to know more and search Amazon and Ebay for sellers using - "Parafilm Nursery Grafting Tape". You can also use Buddy tape which is similar, although i prefer Parafilm.

@@crzy11000 If its similar to saran wrap, i don't think its a genuine Parafilm Tape. This one doesn't feel like saran wrap and has much different properties (namely is breathable! which is very important for the health of the grafts - check the manufacturer website - www.bemis.com/na/products/parafilm-floratape/parafilm-grafting). If its a plastic based tape you cant cover the buds with it (or you have to cut tiny slits in it, were the buds are) so they can escape the tape and you have to remove it after 3-4 weeks, so it doesn't strangle the grafts (which isn't necessary with Parafilm).

@@JSacadura Thanx for the reply.when you are grafting at 6:35 it looks like you push the graft through until the to edge of the cambium on the graft meets with the slit edge of the rootstock is that correct? Also it looks like you trimmed only one side of the grafting stock on the one graft but the other you trimmed both sides like a "V" am I seeing that correctly? I am going to try this technique . Wish me luck.

can we use cling film instead of parafilm ?

As long as you don't cover the buds with it. The buds can break the parafilm (wax based tape) easily but not plastic film. The film would have to be removed after roughly 3 weeks.

The cambium layer is beneath the bark so there is no need to remove the skin of the scion. The inner bevel of the scion and the cambium layer of the rootstock have a good contact. That contact is all that is needed for the tissues to fuse.

The aluminium foil protection was kept for 3-4 weeks (until the buds started to grow - i have just removed it). The Parafilm stays in place, i don't remove it. You don't have to remove it, as its a special kind of waxy tape that the buds break without effort. And it degrades with time, without causing any problems to the growing branch.

Can I go for it if my scion wood is no more dormant
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 4 жыл бұрын
The grafts with this method will probably fail, if the scions aren't dormant, as they don't have time to fuse vascular tissues and the scion will die, growing only with its own energy reserves. You can later try other techniques (like budding techniques) that can work with non dormant buds.

Hazelnuts accept the usual methods of grafting (including the most basic ones, like the cleft graft). The problem is that most grafts will fail due to the slow formation of callus in this species. Success rate seems to improve when the grafts are coated with grafting wax or well protected with other methods, like parafilm covering the graft and the scion, so they have time to heal properly while keeping the moisture in - check this interesting article on the subject - ijnrs.damghaniau.ac.ir/article_527093_7458e1e7e30d09560da4ce19a8c7006f.pdf

I'm using parafilm. Its a soft waxy tape that degrades with time and sun. The buds break it easily so there is no need to remove it. So, usually, i let it for several months and don't remove it or remove what remains before the winter (so the humidity doesn't stay inside the tape during the winter - this might create mold). In the Clef video i just published, i am removing some parafilm that stayed on the graft for a year.
