Well, Jimmyjack, if you are not equipped to handle an emergency you are a hazard to everyone on the water; including the Coast Guard. I had this shit squared away by the time I was 6, have been boarded more times than I can count, and have never had a negative experience with the Coast Guard or water patrol. I have also conducted two rescues on my own because I was first on the scene. And? I have never tossed myself or a passenger in the water because safety was drilled into me before I was allowed to set foot on Dad's vessel. Heck! Even when I go to a fishing dock on a local lake the first thing I do is try to track down a throwable life ring and I carry 50 feet of rope in my pack along with a first aid kit and flares. I have used the first aid kit for a few minor injuries but I haven't needed either of the others but I did haul one kid out of the water after he went over the rail. Maybe, if his mother had spent a little quality time with the U.S.C.G. she would have pulled her boy out herself instead of standing there and screaming? Cheers!

For those complaining about CG checks, they did one on me when I first got my inflatable pontoon boat. On the ramp the first time i went to put it in the water. They said I needed a whistle or other audible distress signal. OK, got one from my backpacking gear in the car and was good to go. Thanked them for their concern. Three hours later, with a crab pot over the side (and in use as an anchor) and a crab ring over the other side, a 42 ft sail made a turn about 100 feet from me. And headed directly towards me.... with no forward watch or anyone looking. I was yelling (as were several other people in small boats crabbing around me), one guy was blowing his air horn... And their was no way I was getting the pot and ring trap up to get out of the way. I guess the idiots heard my whistle and they looked up just in time to cut away. His bow pushed my stern under as he went by. It knocked the sonar unit, both oars, two fishing rods, and the motor over board. But that whistle was what he heard. Thank you CG for reminding me to have one. Five minute safety check? MAY have saved my life. (PS, thank you to REAL boaters and fishermen who dropped everything they were doing to help me get my boat back in order and back to the launch. Also thank you to the CG who responded to the accident. I guess they have the authority to remove an operator's license and they got his right away. And someone in a very nice Boston Whaler pulled my boat up onto his and put me on the boat ramp. Real people doing what they have to to help out. And that is the way we all should be out on the water).

I boat in Maryland and each year get a safety check from the coast guard at the beginning of the season. They issue you a sticker that goes on the left side of the windscreen and the police, coast guard, and DNR rarely bother you because the sticker is visible and they know you are in compliance. They are always polite and professional. Things can go bad fast on a boat, better to be overprepared. The fire extinguisher is important, it might be for another boater in need.

Good morning Scott. That was the Coast Guard Auxiliary that performed the Voluntary Safety Check (VSC). Yes, they still do it, and yes it is at no cost to the boater. The VSC decal tells the Active Duty that you have been inspected and your vessel and its equipment complies with all applicable federal and state law. The sticker is not a guarantee that you won't be boarded, but when the CG is out doing random boardings, chances are that they will skip you in favor of a vessel that does not display the sticker. The point for older adults is that this just would never happen for no reason. There were very few park police or Coast Guard even around in the 60's to be on patrol. These were open areas free for recreation and free from interference. The vast majority of us were responsible boaters and campers and considered innocent until proven guilty. Just not used to being "checked up on." These things were done at the boat ramp. Great respect for new park police and CG, but they were much more in the background and had other duties. A shift in society that's hard to explain to a suspicious mind. I kept safety and all other necessary equipment because it could save our lives.

Before I joined the Coast Guard I never really understood why we did these kind of checks/boarding but for all the people that don’t know, we do these for the Mariners safety. The whole point is (and god forbid) something does go wrong they are at least half way prepared to survive so we can go out and bring them back alive. Boardings are never malicious, we’re not money grabbing, at the end of the day we want for whoever it is to be safe and get back to dry land with their families.

That's fine and I am thankful for yours and their service. But getting ID from citizens is 4th amendment violation when there's no crime being committed. Plain and simple. I could have sworn that we have the right, as citizens, to travel freely unmolested. No?

Yes. Thank goodness for the coast guard. My stepson is in it are Cortez FL and we just visited them. Very professional and great group of people. They are also our first line of Homeland security. Very important mission. Also keep illegals from entering our country. Great video.

Required or not, a fire extinguisher is a really good idea on a motor boat of any type. Things go to hell real quickly with even a small fire on board.

I have a 12 ft folding boat, and I got a summons for not having a fire extinguisher on my boat. I also needed a flag and they even checked the dates on my flares to see if they were expired. I think they let you slide because they knew you from your videos.
@JohnSkinnerFishing6 жыл бұрын
I think they were hard on you! I've googled and believe that < 26 feet without a fixed gas tank or enclosed area the fire extinguisher is not required. West Marine has a nice section on requirements that was updated last month. If anyone knows different, please share!

a folding boat? FOLDING? What country are you in? Canada?
@cup_and_cone6 жыл бұрын
Flares are only good for 3 1/2years from when they're made (not from date when you buy them), which is why they check them. Most people probably don't realize their flares are expired.
@cup_and_cone6 жыл бұрын
Andrew Saliba - Yep! It all depends on their mood and vibe they get from you... they will do everything from reading the tags on life preservers to ensure USCG type rating, to check flare markings for USCG approval and expiration, to checking the pressure levels and dates on fire extinguisher, etc. They can get super picky if they want to.

That is the problem, they need to be consistent and professional. When they let one person slide and come down on another regardless of the attitude of either they are wrong. Government should never use their power to humiliate a person. Getting even is never professional.
