Today during Fit Tip Tuesday I'm taking a deeper look at the fit of the bodice at the neck and shoulders. The slope of your shoulder contributes to how your neck sits a top your shoulders. If you have very sloped shoulders, your neck sits higher & if you have have a flat slope of shoulder your neck sits lower. This fitting issue can be addressed by adjusting the slope of the shoulder and lower the front/back neckline. ...Or, here's an easy one-step adjustment you can use to fit the top of you pattern pieces for a low base of neck. Plus, did you know this adjustment doubles as the fix for an erect upper back (with little curve)!

Thank you for this video, I think that this is an adjustment that I need. When I measure nape to waist I don't need a length adjustment, but back shoulder to waist I need to add length and I and couldn't figure out where I was going wrong
@JSternDesigns
@JSternDesigns 2 ай бұрын
If your waist the back of neck measurements are in agreement.. but you need more length from waist to back shoulder... It may be because you have a forward ball of your shoulder... Here's a tutorial for that (You lengthen the back and shorten the front shoulder). I did a new series "Efficient Works Flow for Bodice Fitting" that starts at the top of the pattern pieces (in the blue zone) to fit upper back, neck, high bust and shoulder first. Then work down into the Pink Zone to fit the rest. I made PDF companions to go along with this series with links to video tutorials to help you find the fit adjustment you're looking for. Here's a link to Part 1 (PDF links are in the description) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nbSjedBp2cWqaKM.html I'm also teaching a three week bodice fitting class starting June 1. In this class I'll guide you through the process step by step... (You can work on your pattern in this class).... Here's a link to this class if you're interested in checking that out jsterndesigns.com/product/efficient-work-flow-for-bodice-fitting-zoom-class-june-1-8-15/ Hope this helps! Thank you so much for this video. This is is the first time I have seen someone address this issue. A so called fitting expert who led me through making a sloper told me I needed to lower my back neckline. When I asked why that happened I was told it was because I had shoulders like a man which didn't help me in the slightest. While it was easy to lower the neckline, I struggled to understand and apply it to future makes. Lowering my neckline meant my waist to nape length was now wrong and instead of dealing with my square shoulders in the right place I was told to lower my armscye which looked terrible. It has been an unfortunately long journey to understand this one. Whenever I raised the issue people assumed my back was rounded and that was why i had a problem at my neck. I would struggle to look at my back and to see the so called rounded back which wasn't there!

I'm so happy this helps you.... and ugh, sorry about your experience with your so called fitting expert... "Shoulders Like a Man???" In my experience, so men can have a very sloped shoulder because of their developed trapazoid muscle at the top of their back! Having said that, I do describe my own shoulders as "line backer" shoulders because they are very broad and flat :))) Thanks for fitting along with me!

@@JSternDesigns I find the language around fitting often puts the emphasis on the person's body being less than ideal rather than put the focus on the pattern not being correct for the person. It certainly feeds women's low self esteem.

Hi Jennifer, this is exactly the problem I encounter I have very straight broad shoulders and a slim low neck. A couple of years ago I tried to make a Raglan T-Shirt in the traditional two colours, and it was a disaster. I did used a purchased pattern but the shape of the arms would not lay correctly on my broad shoulders, wrinkles would appear where they should not have been. I would really like to try and perfect this type of top but I have no idea on how to do it. I have heard that sometimes they make a seam onto of the sleeve, but to me that looks so ugly. Do you have any suggestions, they will be gratefully received. Thank you!
@JSternDesigns
@JSternDesigns 2 ай бұрын
:) Raglans can be tricky to fit onto a straight broad shoulder because you're asking a tube of fabric to bend around the shape. A raglan sleeve pattern can be drafted a few different ways.... The sleeve can be drafted straight off the shoulder - this creates a sleeve that will "fit" the least... best for oversized tops. The sleeve can also be drafted at an angle downward from the shoulder... The greater the angle, the more shape it will have to fit the shape of your shoulder/arm. But there are limitations to how much you can angle the sleeve.... It is true that a two piece raglan sleeve is more fitting and easier to adjust for your shape. If you don't like the look of the two piece sleeve, you can compromise with a dart at the top of the sleeve where the center seam would be. This may help fit your shape. Having said all of this, I have a linebacker shape and my raglan sleeve pattern works really well on me with no adjusting! Here's a link to a tutorial I did showing how raglan sleeves are drafted if you're interested... There's a link to my pattern in the description :) kzfaq.info9V60477_7FI .... and one final suggestion... Stretchy soft drapy knit will be more forgiving than knits that are more stable knits! Hope this help, thanks for watching

How do you tell if you have a low neck rather than square shoulders?
@JSternDesigns
@JSternDesigns 2 ай бұрын
If you have square shoulders it's likely the base of your neck is low... Look at the angle the base of your neck/shoulder makes... if it's more like an L shape vs a softer sloping angle that's another good tell tale sign! Hope this helps! Thanks for fitting along with me

@@JSternDesigns so does it make a difference if i lower the neck or raise the armscye.
@ruthgahlgren
@ruthgahlgren 2 ай бұрын
In my case the armscye fits in most patterns so I don't need to add more length in the armscye which is the usual fix for "square shoulders" If you have a low neck base or if you have a high shoulder/arm height, your shoulders will look like they are a flatter rather than sloped. If you have bunching around your neck and have more fabric than is comfortable at that spot you need to shorten the fabric as in the video and it is due to a low neck base.

Oh, I’m so sorry to hear that! …if you have a low base of neck, you can take off collar, adjust shoulder slope & collar pieces then sew it back together … but it’s a lot of work! High base of neck is trickier because you’d need to add to create the slope up to the base of the neck. Thanks for watching
