Shows how to remove and clean smelly odor from sink overflow hole with enzyme cleaner.
A bathroom sink can have a bad smell from mildew and bacteria.
This will grow in the overflow in the sink’s drain compartment. This overflow area connects to the drain because of the double wall built to protect from an over-running sink. The overflow connects to the drain in a double walled area that, by design, retains some standing water. The area sometimes gets water, allowing bacteria to grow and stink like sewer gas, a garbage disposal or the toilet.
I use Zep Drain Care; it is an enzyme-drain-buildup-remover. The enzymes eat the organic growths and live off the accumulated material. This removes the source of the smell to cleanse this area.
Mix a scoop of the powder with a pint of warm water: not hot, not cold. Funnel the solution into the overflow hole. Do not fret if of some of the product over-pours into the sink, it will only help clean the trap and drain.
Allow to set overnight, then flush the sink the following day with warm water. Repeat again the next night until the odor is gone.
Do not use any of the caustic drain cleaner. Some people try vinegar, bleach or salt water.
But we at found an enzyme-based formula breaks down years of drain-clogging build-up to prevent clogs before they form clogs in sinks, toilets and showers. Prevention is better than a cure, which supports the use on a regular schedule before problems start.

Absolutely STERLING KZfaq directions, sir 👍🏻 For months now my bathroom sink has smelled so foul 😩 even after asking the maintenance man in my apartment complex to check the drain, only to tell me, "Your drain is clear" 😖. I have been SO frustrated!! Thank God, for your post 🙏🏻Your sketch of the sink bowl depicting the mystery of the overflow drain, & how it can trap water, becoming stagnant, & likely growing mold, causing nasty smells, was TOTAL VALIDATION of what I'm experiencing❣️ I am about to attempt this using your recommended product ZEP DRAIN DEFENSE, which I also appreciate you stressing the importance of mixing the ZEP with WARM water, NOT HOT👍🏻 God Bless You for your time and GREAT care 🙏🏻. SOOO DETAILED!!!! 😃

What if it's a brand new double sink vanity and the egg smell is coming from the overflow on only 1 of the sinks?

@@HA-ez9wj Check to see if a trap is under that sink, sometimes new sinks react and can smell…. You can still treat w/the enzyme, it won’t hurt anything.

Another way the overflow cavity can get full of crud is if the plug lifter assembly gets clogged up with hair and debris, soap and dirt trying to go down the drain will back up into the bottom of the overflow path. I'm pretty sure that's what put grunge into the innards of my sink...

Dump a good handful of baking soda into the drain, let sit (don't run any water) for 15 minutes, then pour 1/4 to 1/2 cup white vinegar down. Watch the bubbles, hear the pops and fizz, and let it sit for another 15 minutes. Then, boiling water and voila!

Mr. Gilbert, Thanks so much for your useful tips on home care! I have a 1/2 bath newly renovated in the last year. I am getting a moldy smell from the faucet itself first handwash every morning. Its a "fancy" waterfall design faucet, and I can only imagine, the faucet was poorly designed, and is somehow creating a breeding ground for mold. Is there anything I can do for the sink (other than replacing it) to clean it and maintain it eliminating the mold? Thanks for any tips you can offer in advance, and keep up the great videos!
@MrHardware1
@MrHardware1 4 жыл бұрын
You could put a shot of bleach in the waterfall of the faucet, however it could ruin the finish or hurt the next person if they took a drink without purging out the bleach. The enzyme in the overflow usually does the job, faucets unless they sit for a week shouldn't grow mold.

I’ve repeatedly tried cleaning the overflow area with a wire equipped with a bristle brush on the end, sent loads of hot water and cleaners to flush it, but it always comes back. NOW I know why. Your diagram/sketch was very helpful, Ava well as the product type and a particular brand to try. THANK YOU! Note: we never overflow the sink, but the kids bathroom sink Ava’s do in thought I should clean mine too - it was probably DRY before that an d m why I never had a problem - until I tried cleaning it. More to self: NEVER LET THE SINK FILL TO THE OVERFLOW HOLES! QUESTION: Will the enzymes eventually clean it until it’s dry, and the problem will go away, or is this an ongoing task now?

Actually the holes in the drain assembly allow water to keep the overflow area wet. They let water out, and also water in. Some sinks I’ve never re-treated, another after 5 or more years….

Hi there are two different types of sink drains one with a a overflow and without. So just buy the one with the over flow drain pipe than you don’t have to worry about any smell. The over flow water goes right down the drain.

Actually almost all wash basins, bathroom sinks, have overflows. Only newer 'vessel' sinks do not have overflows. The way the popup drains work is there is a cavity in the top 1" of the popup that accepts water from the overflow holes. To be universally plumbed by all sorts of manufacturers the drain hole in the popup will be slightly above the lower area in the sink leaving some water to get stagnant there.

Try a shop vac set up for wet vacuuming over the overflow hole. If it stays clogged you'll need to remove and reinstall the pop up assembly to find the blockage. Someone may have filled the overflow holes in the popup with putty.

I don't think surface rust around an overflow can clog a drain. Hair, toothpaste and soap will coat a drain a little every year to eventually clog a drain.

As far as I know It won't hurt anything. After a day soaking in the enzyme you could flush it out and then use dish washing detergent. I used to put a pack in my old whirlpool tub if it sat dormant over a few months.

Hello I know this videos is years old but I just watched it and I am wondering what you do the next morning, do you leave the enzymes there sitting or you run water through the overflow hole to push them down the drain? Thanks

No the enzyme will get rinsed out eventually, it doesn’t hurt a thing being there. You can even do a second and third application just to keep the drain lines open.
