He is as good as Zidane . But because Argentina previously didn't do well in world Cup he became dissappear easily. There are many great players forgotten or not even mentioned. As I know Rogerio(Brazil) is one of the best goalkeeper but no body knows him. To me Fabien barthez is not good goalkeeper . He is just lucky to play for France.

@@louong93 The thing is, nobody wanted to play with him, he was a really bad teammate creating drama everywhere he went, if he wasnt the star then he made sure the overall moral of the team was shit. You need more than just skill to be a useful member of a team. Still, here in argentina is to this day and many years to come, maybe even forever, one of the best players in history and is remembered on a daily basis, i didnt particularly like him but facts are facts, most ppl love him here.

Riquelme had a unique personal style of play that never existed before and no other player has replicated since. he's one of the greatest players in history but because of different factors he never got the recognition in Europe that he deserved. Along with Maradona and Messi, the greatest Argentine player in history.

He is big phisically. Perhaps because this his style of going forward but also in other directions. In Boca Juniors he was more than Maradona. Even if Maradona played in Boca Juniors, specifically in this club Riquelme did more. Messi or others great players weight less so they run quicly in direction of the opposite goalkeeper. Teams that pay 300 millions for a player did not have patience for a slow genious. He had level for Real Madrid or Manchester United but those teams had no patience for Riquelme slow style. Boca did and was world champion.

We took those sort of players for granted I swear. Strong on the ball, resilient, tactically astute, able to control the tempo of the play, hardly ever relinquishing possession, start attacks and being able to execute the killer pass. A classic play making number 10 Lesson here kids: 80% of the game is played in your head. The rest is made up of talent and luck

destruiu nós brasileiros inúmeras vezes na Libertadores. Jogava no talento puro e nem precisa cumprir funções táticas ou usar um GPS nas costas para monitorar o quanto ele correu atrás de um volante brucutu. Uma pena que jogadores assim acabaram. Na verdade, a própria posição que ele jogava acabou. Destruíram o futebol.

The 2006 season really could have been his shining hour. Villarreal were a good team that season however, Unfortunately they couldn't get past a very determined Arsenal team tho it was very close. Had they made it to the final I truly believe that if they had put their shoulder to the wheel, they could've won it that year and what would that do for his reputation? he was already known for being an incredible playmaker but if he had the Champions League with Villarreal no less, in his cabinet he'd be undeniably recognized for the class player he truly was.

Riquelme in 2007 Copa America with Argentina, I never saw again the way Riquelme played those games till the final. Picks up the ball from defenders and start as a real number 10 the build up. Argentina was at his top with Riquelme! And with Villareal, the whole team was adapted to him!

Roman tenía una calidad con el balón al pie estupendo, y el uso del cuerpo para alejar al contrario, pero era para una idea de juego de mantener la posesión sin hacer un juego directo, salvo la posibilidad de meter un pase entre lineas desde cualquier parte, ese fue un fuerte de Riquelme para acelerar el juego en ataque, quien reemplazaba la falta de velocidad con el pase en profundidad. Hoy en día podría jugar, pero como un medio centro al estilo Rodri, pero con un compañero dedicado a cubrir sus espaldas en caso de que falle. Nunca lo ví como un enganche, sino como un medio centro que podía soltarse y asistir desde largas o cortas distancias. Enganche me resultaba mas Aimar, o Alonso y Bochini en los 70s y 80s, que cubrian lo que hacía tanto Aimar como Roman , en especial Alonso cumplía con ambos estilos de juego tanto el de Aimar como el de Román...por ahí el que no lo vió puede llgar a decir alguna pavada, juzgandolo por su forma soberbia al hablar.

No es solamente la categoría de las jugadas, sino de los partidos en los que las hizo. En el compilado hay jugadas que ocurrieron en superclásicos, en mundiales, en Libertadores... De local en cualquier cancha, y por cualquier competición.

Me encanta ver todos estos comentarios en ingles, porque si bien riquelme hizo carrera en europa, no fue una carrera larga, la mayoria del tiempo jugo aqui en argentina, y aun asi ver que lo aprecian en otros paises es hermoso, muchas gracias I love seeing all these comments in English because even though Riquelme had a career in Europe, it wasn't a long one. Most of the time, he played here in Argentina. Still, seeing appreciation for him in other countries is beautiful. Thank you very much.

And also Portuguese. In Brazil we dreaded when our teams (club or national) played against him, LMAO. But everyone admired him and considered him a genius. A lot of brazilian teams also tried to hire him but never made it (Fluminense, Corinthians, Flamengo, Palmeiras IIRC)
