TEAM SGG PATREON / somegadgetguy MSI sent over this beauty! The Z17 is a DRAGON of work laptop. A Creator machine should feel different from other laptops. Even with similar hardware, it should look and feel different from a gaming laptop. Chatting about the use, who would be a good fit for a computer like this, and WHERE you might want to use it. Does stylus support make sense for a laptop like this?

It makes sense that a portable Desktop replacement would need to stay plugged in to receive the full benefit. I noticed a similar effect with my Dell XPS 17 (2021) and my Aorus 15P (2020). I really like what this new Z17 provides. Really good product.

I just can't imagine how a battery could be built into a portable that could run those internals at full speed for long...

We need an Ethernet cable in the machine 100%. I don't understand why it was ever removed.

Because the current techie scene is filled with people who like to cosplay as "hard workers". But then when they see anything that has more than just 1 USB C port, they reeeee to the aethers about "muh minimalism" and gaslight everyone else that they don't need features because the "techies" and their cult of personalities said so. TLDR: We live in a very anti-utilitarian world atm.

So it will be that thin and with Wi-Fi 6 it’s not that critical. Personally I use my z17 with a dock while at the office and outside the office I got a usb Ethernet dongle which I only use when setting up costumer network equipment. For all personal use Wi-Fi is more than enough. Only have mine for a month but I’m very pleased with it.

@@pvaz I feel you but I would prefer a bigger machine with more port versatility

@@BrianGlaze sort of agree, but at the same time it does fit my backpack which is rated for 15.6”, due to the 16:10 format and how thin it is. It’s also lite for a 17”. So it comes with benefits even though that means I need a usb Ethernet interface for some situations. Overall I’m very happy with it.

Excellent point about the RGB bit. I use a paper notebook in work meetings because my MSI gaming laptop would look very unprofessional. Wish the price was less steep though.

It would be nice if you find a way to test sustained performance on this kind of machines. You can do it faster on a phone if it's a small job, but what happens when it's a 20-minute 4K video? What happens after 1 hour of gaming?

No ethernet is a bit disappointing, when it comes to the pen I like that they support it but looks a bit pointless when it can't convert. I got a iPad pro so I could use the pencil in my workflow with it linking as a second monitor

Some critical questionscthis review didn't answer: 1. How long under heavy load (max CPU/GPU usage) before it throttles? 2. How does the touchpad compare to the Macbook Pro? 3. Why, gven that it has the highest intel processor and Nvidia graphics card you can get (at least until very recently) on a laptop, can it only handle moderate gaming settings? Can anyone help?

I think the pen tool would be useful in Engineering meetings when you are looking to take a screen shot and a quick doodle over the top....better than using a mouse.

For me ethernet is not really important for me on a laptop as I like doing my work locally, on my laptop. Lots of storage is something that I really like.

I've got an MSI laptop that's 5 years old, that hinge, still a 2 hand opener, which I actually find a little comforting. One thing i did notice is that all the ports seem to be on the sides, and having just gotten a 15 Aero not too long ago with all the ports on the side, those side ports really suck depending on your set-up.

Yeah that's fair. Layout like that means you have to organize your whole desk around the laptop.

I understand the continued *need* for a ethernet port, but it's got to the point where in my old job, during an office refresh; they massively cut down the number of ports in the space, because they were so under utilised It's becoming a bit of a chicken/egg thing

This is true, but sometimes it's just nice NOT having to mess with a dock or hub. Especially on a machine where they could probably find the room to add a useful port like that.

The modern answer would be a simple dongle for Ethernet, but it sure does suck to have to buy one, regardless of cost.

I paid $5k for the top-of-the-line MSI Creator Z17 and it has been absolute garbage. I'm sick to my stomach. The components are power-throttled due to poor cooling efficiency, so it might as well have half the specs. 6 weeks after the warranty expired the nVME went out. $400 to replace and it took 2 months because they messed up the first time. Now just a few weeks later one of the fans is going out. Avoid MSI at all costs please don't make my mistake.

Yikes. I've had good experiences with MSI for years, but I would ABSOLUTELY check if you have any lemon law protections, or if you can get extended warranty/replacement services through your credit card.

@@SomeGadgetGuy the assholes at MSI said "we offer extended warranty you know" when taking my $400 for a 2 month long hard drive replacement then laughed when I said I wanted it. Have to buy it when you first buy the laptop. I bought it through PayPal and you know they don't care.
