If you really want to assess pure strength, you have to account for body weight like you did, but also limb length. You should calculate the distance travelled by the weight. Longer arms = longer levers = the energy to move the weight is bigger. Short people are considered strong when you only account for relative strength, but in reality they are weaker than a tall person who can generate more energy.

I disagree. Absolute weight is definitely a better metric for a scoreboard. Relative weight requires you to factor in your body weight, which not everyone knows or wants to tell. Calculating relative weight is also more difficult/prone to error. It's also easier to manipulate your relative weight since it will come out higher if you say that your body weight is lower.

Why do so many women think that men only build muscle "faster"? It's not just about building muscle faster; men are also capable of developing more muscle mass overall. This distinction is important. The potential for muscle growth is influenced by factors like testosterone and myostatin levels. Men generally have much higher testosterone levels and significantly lower myostatin levels compared to women. This combination not only allows men to build muscle faster but also sets a higher limit for their overall muscle development cap. Also, it's important to understand that muscle mass does not directly equate to strength. There are two primary types of muscle hypertrophy (increase in muscle size): myofibrillar and sarcoplasmic hypertrophy. Sarcoplasmic hypertrophy is typically achieved through exercises involving lower weights and higher repetitions, while myofibrillar hypertrophy is more commonly attained with heavier weights and fewer repetitions. It's worth noting that this refers to training both types to the point of failure. Sarcoplasmic hypertrophy primarily increases the muscle's volume by filling it with fluid, but this doesn't necessarily enhance its ability to lift heavier weights. On the other hand, myofibrillar hypertrophy increases the contractile elements of the muscle. This not only increases muscle size but also enhances its strength and ability to handle more weight in subsequent workouts. Thus, while sarcoplasmic hypertrophy may be more appealing for aesthetic purposes, myofibrillar hypertrophy is more advantageous for functional strength.

Huge props to those that were competitive PLs that were there - well done. Don't count out Chad though - what a lot of people don't understand is how overall strong those tall big kids are; just because he may not know any power lifting technique so he can't use his actual strength limit because he doesn't know the technique well.

Look at the world's absolute strongest people alive: Hafthor Bjornnson (sorry about the spelling) - 200Kg Eddie Hall - 200Kg (at the time he pulled 500Kg. He's since cut down quite a bit) Brian Shaw - 200Kg Notice any pattern here? Strongman weight classes cap out at 105Kg, so the only reason competitors work their way up to a higher bodyweight is to increase the upper limit of their overall strength. If bodyweight does not correlate to strength, why would any strength sport divide by weight class?

BRO I was thinking the same... the first and second place .. BOTH did a sumo pull which is way easier than a deadlift. The last place never deadlifted in his life. How is this a fair "strength" contest. Less range of motion and Sumo Pull makes you easily pull 3 times your own bodyweight. In my Opinion the Black guy is the Strongest, because he is doing a lowerback pull with that weight, which is really strong.

Here are some facts that dont care about your feelings. A) Sumo doesnt count. B) The dude that won can still probably out pull most even trained people on deadlift when he does conventional he probably pulls around 546-565 which would jave still won this 🤷🏼 C) physics means when you move weight a shorter distance it is not as difficult, sumo decreases the length of distance the weight is moved on a deadlift therefore does not count on world record attempts and is cheating.
@dafunkmonster

Also, the advantage that sumo gives is not linear with respect to height. The advantage becomes greater the shorter you get. So a 6'3" lifter might only gain 50lbs by switching to sumo. A 4'10" lifter can add like 100lbs by switching to sumo.

You should have instructed them to all perform the same variation of the lift. Allowing a comparison between sumo and conventional is essentially allowing them to perform two different lifts. This kind of defeats the concept of measuring their absolute and relative strength. Better yet would have been to make them all perform a number of different lifts to evaluate overall strength, not just a deadlift. Some people have poor form or awkward proportions that make such movements more difficult (the taller folks in this video in particular).
