Rob Halford mentioned a lot of great riff masters including Tony Iommi and Ritchie Blackmore at their concert 10 years ago (as much as I remember) but then he said that Peter Green was at least of their caliber... and we all knew which song would follow. As for a choice, well... I could not really decide between the original and this mighty Priest version. Both are outstanding in their own right. But as one of the best comments I've read in my life stated "When Judas Priest covers a song, it automatically becomes a Judas Priest song.", well... I couldn't agree more. They made it theirs. Long live the Priest! And don't you forget Peter Green either. True talents live forever!

With this song, and with Diamonds and Rust too, Judas Priest really have been able to turn someone else's songs into their own songs! They sound as they were born as Judas Priest songs. And Judas Priest has always been a great band! Greetings from Italy!
@Beeracuda922
@Beeracuda922 3 жыл бұрын
For years, I had no idea that those two songs were covers. When I finally found out, I went and listened to the originals. While both were good by Fleetwood Mac and Joan Baez, respectfully, neither come close to the energy that Priest gives to both songs!
@sergiodambrosio363
@sergiodambrosio363 3 жыл бұрын
@@Beeracuda922 yes, they added a lot of Energy, Power! They are a Heavy Metal (one of the best, indeed), so of these elements they have plenty. Sometimes they played Diamonds and Rust acoustic, so it sounds more similar to Joan Baez's original; but I much prefer the electric galopping version! Probably Baez's fans will not agree... 😆 Greetings from Italy!

I'm not a fan of Priest as Metal Gods. But I'm gonna appreciate their talent which appears in cover songs as "Diamonds" and "Manalishi". Please remember "Johnny B Goode" at Ram It Down too.

@sergiodambrosio363 3 жыл бұрын
@@user-rw9ju2zy5u They covered another song, Better By You Better Than Me by Spooky Tooth, on their album Stained Class in 1978, and made a good work with it too. But, some years later, that song gave them a lot of trouble, because they were accused of causing the death of two young men who killed each other after listening to that album... It was obviously a madness, to give the fault to the band! Plain bullshit! If those two were out of their head, surely the music had no fault. But in the eighties HM and HR were seen by some as a menace to society! 🙄 Of course, in the end reason prevailed, and Judas Priest were proven not guilty. Greetings from Italy!

@@sergiodambrosio363 Their reading (so to speak) here of Green's song is pretty straightforward. Their energy & style into/onto Green's version. I prefer Green/Fleetwood Mac's version because, for me, Green was a brilliant guitar player and highly influential on my own young days as a player (I learned how to play this song long before Priest took it on). The lyrics - knowing the context to Green - mean something entirely different in that version than here. The Baez song in something else entirely (and I am speaking here as a Baez fan - since you mentioned that). Because Baez was writing about and to Dylan (and it's quite a kiss off/fk you song in that context) & Halford could not, or did not want to, sing that whole swath of the lyrics that were absolutely, 100% about/to Dylan he left them out. The compensation he added was by turning the title into a repeated chorus, which was a clever arrangement move. In the end tho' there is absolutely no way that the Priest version can ever be as emotionally charged as Baez's version. It's just not personal, so it's not possible. There's my two cents.
@Randgalf
@Randgalf 4 ай бұрын
This is a token of two things: How Priest had a brilliant way of doing covers back then and how great a band Fleetwood Mac was while Green was still with them. Just how ahead of its time was this song back in -69!

I always loved this song since I first heard in in the early 80s and was always fascinated about what the hell it meant. In all that time I never realized this was a cover. Going back to the original Fleetwood Mac / Peter Green version I am amazed to find that it's much darker and heavier than Judas Priest's cover. I would have never thought I'd say such a thing comparing those two bands but there it is. Lord, what might have been if Peter Green hadn't fell into his troubles right after this track was released.
@tommccarthy3052
@tommccarthy3052 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. There are elements of fear, panic & foreboding in Green's version that do not exist here. The slower pace also makes it so. No disrespect to Priest's take on the song.

I still remember getting rides to school and myfriend blasting Judas Priest. I probably got to third period before I could hear again but it was awesome!
