In the movie The talented Mr. Ripley Jude Law plays Dickie Greenleaf who absolutely personifies old money style with effortless elegance. His excellently relaxed and classy costumes are designed by Oscar winning Ann Roth and Gary Jones. Dickie wears everything from yacht friendly linen shirts to jazz club appropriate suits and hats. Yet his wardrobe is not that extensive but he always has just the right piece for just the right occasion, a key element of the old money aesthetic. In this short video we take look at three of his key costumes.
This is just a quick extra. Casino Royale is on the way like I promised.

I had no idea what "old money" style was years back when the movie was out, but watching clips from this video, the wardrobe is still classic and not outdated at all. Once again, thanks for all the information.

dickie greenleaf looks so good despite the fact the movie was from the 90s.. that is the one movie that really convinced me to follow the old money style, especially when its is very suitable for my country's climate. all I need is some linen shirts, nice polos n a few trousers to create so many looks. he n the "old money" style movement inspires me to create my own clothing brand but I haven't started it yet bcs now I'm focusing on trading to haev enough money to have enough cash flow for the business to survive within 6 months. nonetheless, dickie greenleaf really opened my eyes since I first watched mr ripley a few years ago

Yes he does. Jude Law is excellent. I really hope you can get your brand off the ground. But yes capital is an issue. Myself and my wife thought about doing it as we liv her win China and have access to great fabrics but building a brand from scratch his hard work.

@@ForTheLoveOfSuits true... currently I'm trying to learn as much as I can about the business as well, from design n manufacturing process to marketing n brand building. i've been learning so much from yt channel "recloseted" n "glass factory", in fact I'm planning to join their paid programs once my trading career takes off bcs its getting some momentum now. recloseted teaches you abt everything you need to know from design up to branding n marketing, and glass factory has a vast network of highly credible manufacturers from around the world + insights. they are both really great! you should check it out

Purple Noon was the best Ripley film, due to Alain Delon’s performance & clothing style.

But I still think the local Italians are dressed better than Dickie. The knitted polos. The colourful “sports” jackets. The subtle gold jewellery which the local young men are wearing. Miles beyond old money style. Viva Italia!

Old money is't a style you can wear. Either you have it or you don't and it doesn't matter.

@@Euridsol No, it's something you are born into, it cannot be achieved. That would be new money.

my dad is considered new money but bcs he was born n raised in a very broke family, he valued money so much by not unnecessarily flaunting wealth n use it to help other people. in fact, he actually spends more money on helping poor people n his community than himself n his family. I kind of resent it growing up bcs I couldn’t get what all my friends could get when I was young but now I get it. but my monetary values is considerably less noble than his bcs I would rather spend 8k on myself n 2k on helping others than 8k on others n 2k for myself. my dad has tasted all the nicest things money can offer through his friends for free n it never fazed him. you wouldn’t know he is rich unless you know him. but at the same time we still enjoy some luxury cars, house n trips. its not like he drives an old accord like warren buffet. really amazing guy. too bad his son is pretty selfish

@@sentiasatransformasi Now that is some old money thinking. Old money doesn't truly apply in the US, unless it goes all the way back to Europe. In the US, the oldest money you can get is anyone who had the first chance to snatch up some land when it was there for the taking and keep it for the last 1-200 years. Lots of Brits were what is called land rich. They sometimes had noble titles, inherited land and therefore were landlords and usually had a country manor, but were cash poor. There was a community aspect to it, knowing that they, and the farmers who rented their land, were interdependent. At any time, they could technically sell, take the money and run, but that would be a short term smaller gain, rather than investing in generational wealth. The title and land itself afforded them other privileges than just cash to spend. So old money mentality isn't just about bling and immediate gratification, that is the poverty mentality that many people with new money bring to their newfound wealth. It's something bigger than themselves. They were born into it and did not have to "earn" it, but had to learn how to maintain it, a unique set of qualities. Your Dad's wisdom seems to come from life experience, a degree of emotional intelligence and whatever values were imparted to him by his own family, who may have had old money consciousness as well. It's interesting when you trace your ancestry back, sometimes there were people of status who set the course for the family, They lost their wealth but the spirit of their values were passed down.
