I saw FIREBRAND last night in the cinema and my jaw was on the FLOOR - he was so damn good as HVIII. This man has had an illustrious career, with some of his best work in the latter half but THIS performance ? For me, the BEST of his career. Hands down. He is stunning in firebrand, horrifying, complex, multi layered - just as the real Henry was (Tudor historian, here!) ❤

My favourite of Jude's roles is still his performance as Jerome in Gattaca - but goodness he's inhabited a lot of vastly different characters exceptionally well in his career.

Jude got my attention and I became a fan after his role a contract killer in "The Road to Perdition". Of course, you had some heavy weights there too: Tom Hanks, Paul Newman & Daniel Craig.

Jude Law in Ripley is one of the best movie acting performances of all time.
@DroolRockworm

I mean, he was okay! Just sort of playing a handsome rich playboy, only real challenge I guess was the American accent but, not as if it was very challenging of a role I’d think. I’d actually go more with Matt Damon in that movie, just for the sheer volume of acting required. I actually prefer that movie to the recent show that came out, I like the new show but felt it was a little unnecessary at times, and also of course the character was played completely differently by that dark haired guy, wayyyy more creepy
@slyasleep
@slyasleep Ай бұрын
@@DroolRockworm I have to disagree. Sure, Damon has to do more of the lifting, but Law displays the whole gamut callousness, vulnerability, irritation, anger, delight so effortlessly, sometimes all within the same scene, all so naturally. He radiates off the screen.
@myaimistrue100
@myaimistrue100 Ай бұрын
One of our greatest living actors. Damon is good, but isn't in Jude's orbit in terms of talent.. After Dickie was killed, it was like all the light and energy went out of the film. He did so much more than play the rich playboy with an accent. Who can forget the chilling scene when Tom tries to get in his bath--the look of absolute recoil on his face, or when he catches Tom trying in his clothes--the visceral disgust. Or when the pregnant girl he slept with drowns--his guilt and grief, but then he kind of shuts it off. One of the best performances ever.

I was confused when he called Catherine "his latest wife" because I thought Catalina de Aragón was his first wife (so the one Henry broke up with the Church to divorce). Went to check and there were two other Catherines later on lol, seems he liked the name more than the women.

I’m trying to imagine what his rambling dialogue would be like, and what the director’s face would look like when Trump as Henry goes off script and starts complaining about windmills, or about how unfairly he's being treated, or begins making creepy remarks about his own daughters.

He was king... who had personal physicians constantly trying to treat them. They DID get infected.. had episodes of sepsis and fevers etc (they're basically what killed him). There's documentation of it you can read about here: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2789029/
@flapkatt6094
@flapkatt6094 Ай бұрын
That's the point, they were infected, bvut possibly kept from completely rotting off by the way that medieval doctors applied leeches and maggots. One sucked the blood, the second ate decaying flesh. Still, accounts that I have read are pretty clear that no one offered an honest opinion that the king, in fact, stank to high heaven. Imagine having to be one of his wives, bedding that humongous lump of rotten flesh.
