The original comic is very satirical and intentionally funny. Dredd literally arrest people who got robbed because they dressed too fancily in rough areas. 'Instigating robbery'. The only thing that stops Dredd from being a full-blown fascist is that he is uncorruptable and will judge even the most powerful and important people, and other judges.

Rico was an original comic creation from the 70's, and was Dredd's clone brother that was exiled to Titan penal colony. Block wars are fought between two or more blocks. It was (& still is) a very satirical comic. I would thoroughly recommend reading some!

I do prefer Dredd (2012) But this film nails the comics depiction of Mega City One, the tech, Robots, Vehicles, and the judges while of course putting their own spin on a few designs. Dredd (2012) did lack in this department for budget reasons going for a more near future look filmed in Cape Town. It's also not very satire or wacky at all focusing more on the gritty stuff but the film is still amazing and very true to the character of Dredd going for the style of the earlier comics. But yeah overall I'm not big when people say Judge Dredd (1995) sucks as a whole as the film did have amazing elements that go beyond Dredd (2012). People say Dredd is much closer to the comics but I'd argue visually Judge Dredd is closer to the comics while in character depictions I'd say Dredd is closer along with it's embrace of gore and violence. Combine them both and we'll have something amazing. People who say "Well Dredd is meant to be dark and gritty" clearly have never read the comics, there wacky and outlandish as hell filled with colourful character and wild locations. Texas city has buildings with cowboy hats and massive statues of cowboys lol it's as wild as you can get. So I would love for a mix of both in future Dredd projects. Both films have there pros and cons but I find them both enjoyable.

For me the character of Dredd is portrayed far better by the remake than the Stallone film. The world is a little more well portrayed in the Stallone film but I will say that as wacky as the books can get in setting and rules of the land, the people that populate the world almost always are portrayed in a gritty tone that I think Stallone's film didn't quite get. The people were too hammy in the Stallone film. Like the joke of the books is the world itself is goofy and yet the people play it straight. The Stallone film felt like the actors were in on the joke which made the characters feel in on the joke and inauthentic.

Yes, well said. The comics told all kinds of different stories and were not just dark and gritty which seems to be the go to for people who have only seen the Karl Urban movie. The stories in the comics were totally unpredictable, just like the city and its inhabitants. They could veer from comedy to tragedy sometimes in the same story. For all the criticism the Stallone version gets it manages to capture Mega City One and the madness of it for me. The opening is great.

Director Danny Cannon was a huge fan of the comics and had created the world of Judge Dredd perfectly, the look of the Mega City, vehicles, costumes and most of the characters. Unfortunately the director didn't count on the studio picking Stallone as the lead. Since he had 'star power' and hadn't read any of the source material began re writing the script for himself and thus over ruled the director to the point it then became a 'Stallone' movie . Hence the corny dialogue, the direction of the story and worst offence of all.. Showing Dredds face. Had they chosen someone else and allowed Danny Cannon to release his vision of the movie. It would a been a classic and sequels would have followed.
@ImAlsoMerobiba
@ImAlsoMerobiba 11 ай бұрын
Do you have a source that he's responsible for that level of rewrites? It seems what people want to believe, because it's what fans expect of a lead actor who doesn't care for the source material. Reason I'm skeptical is that they had planned that the original lead (Schwarzenegger) and the villain would wear blue contacts. That was before Stallone was ever involved. So there was clearly already a plan for Dredd to be helmet-less for a significant amount of time. Also, because I haven't seen an actual source before for it. Just people repeating it as fact. It is documented that film was re-edited and cut down by Stallone and the studio to get a PG-13 rating. That is the reason is isn't as dark and satirical as it was written to be. That's not rewriting the script though.

In fact, we have Stallone saying this in an interview in 2006: "For those who are jonesing on the JUDGE DREDD situation, i.e. helmet biz, I never wanted to take my helmet off - that way I wouldn’t have to deal with the pussification of applying make-up everyday - the trauma of looking at life through continually baking baby blue contact lenses. I AM THE LAAAWWWW! This movie had some production problems as Steven E DeSoua wanted to make this into a kid friendly PG13 comic book adventure, but producer Andrew Vajna refused, as he wanted this to be dark gritty and violent, calling it "BATMAN 89 Meets BLADE RUNNER." DeSouza quickly disowned the project. Even director Danny Cannon was let out of the editing room by Stallone, whom actually directed the action scenes, cutting out 15 minutes of action Sequences, including a scene where Dredd shoots and kill the Judge Clones. The film wasn't a critical or box office success, making $113 million dollars against a $90 million dollar budget, killing any chance of a franchise. Stallone has no regrets playing the character, as he said in interviews that "it was a fun experience, until the producers git rid of Danny Cannon and hired Stallone as well as another director to finish the film."

I saw it in 96 on video and we saw it as a satire back then. I think Stallones hyper stern demeanor was a concious choice and he nailed that. This was 2 years after Demolition Man, so he already had a satirical/ comical scifi cop role under his belt. The movie wasn`t great back then, but it was funny. - On another note, please watch "Tank Girl", comic movie, too, same time period and as much over the top!

My dad 72 passed away a couple years ago from Alzheimer's, I remember me and him going to see this movie at midnight when it came out, it was a special promotion local radio station was doing, pretty cool to think back on

Stallone's Dredd has always been a guilty pleasure. I enjoyed your reaction and have given a new perspective on this movie that I want to rewatch it. Urban's Dredd is far much more superior to this one. As for Armand Asante I remember him in the TV Miniseries the Odyssey, Fatal Instinct and I, The Jury.

This is one of my favorite Stallone films! So much over the top acting and some unintentionally funny moments. The world building is great but really hampered by the technology at the time. You should definitely watch Demolition Man! Also, for a full on Stallone Comedic role you should watch Oscar.

Honestly, it's such a camp mass murder movie. It's gloriously fun and the practical effects are on a level you just don't see anymore. I hold a lot of nostalgia for this film.

If you watch interviews with Stallone, he was very much aware of the satire that is achieved through the character of Judge Dredd. If you check out the comics, there is very dark satirical comedy and even some silly humor. This movie captures the spirit of certain runs of the comics very well. But Stallone said himself, this "should have been more balls to the wall." I think he knew something is lacking. For a 90s rated R comic book flick, it's fun, and I still love it. 2012's DREDD is so much better, though. That one is "balls to the wall." It's kind of derivative of The Raid, but it's still very good.

I think he was only aware of it after the fact. He is part of the reason why it was edited down to a more generic action comedy. He's admitted the way he handled the editing of Judge Dredd to be one of his biggest mistakes, because it could have been more.

Guys, you cannot watch Demolition Man and not believe that Stallone is in it for the humor. He IS an Oscar-winning writer, ya know? He's in on the joke. There's no way he's playing this for the drama.

you can see where the $100m budget went. at the time it was made that was what all the writeups talk about was the overblown budget. i think Stalone has an awareness of character. but the director at the time was marketing it as serious.

If you want to see comedy with Stallone, you need to do a Movie Reaction to Oscar from 1991. Perfectly shows off his comedy chops, and yes, Demolition Man is a must see.

I love how quickly Coy thinks on his feet, trying to use the RICO laws as justification for a character's namesake. Not even sure if he was right or not, but it did sound good. LOL!!!! The Karl Urban remake is so much better IMO. It's like watching a ramped up version of "The Raid" on 'roids.

To answer your questions at the end, I was at prime age for this movie when it came out. People loved Rob Schneider in it and thought he was pretty much the saving grace of it. It launched his career in movies, pretty much. Other than that, it wasn't really received that well. Comic nerds were annoyed because anyone who read Dredd thought it was way too silly, and anyone who was looking for a movie like Face Off or Demolition Man, were not impressed and considered it too cheesy.
