I was a defense attorney for 20 years and represented hundreds of DWI clients. While the vast majority were just normal people who truly did not know they were impaired, did not do badly on field sobriety tests, and had relatively low (but still over the limit) B.A.C. They made a mistake and were generally very remorseful. If I managed to find a flaw in the breath test (and believe me those machines are NOT infallible) and got the charge reduced to reckless driving, I had no problem at all doing so. But there were a handful like this woman and representing them made me sick to my stomach. I've even had idiots show up to court drunk for their DWI case, having DRIVEN to court! (Two got arrested leaving the courtroom.) Eventually I decided I'd had enough and now I'm working on getting back to teaching math. Every defendant in this country is entitled to legal representation but it's women like this that made me quit.

FUN FACTS: for anyone who curious what ultimately happened, Maria Aguilera ended up accepting another plea deal: 5 years in prison, 3 years of probation, 200 hours community service, substance abuse counselling. But wait, there's more! This report on the case was severely lacking. I don't criticize WPLG Local 10 for not saying what the defendant's ultimate sentence was, because they aren't time travellers, and had no way at the time of this reporting to know. However, this report was weak. They didn't explain the details of the plea deal that got canceller, anything about the accident, and didn't show the defendant's odd or disrespectful behavior in court that lead to the judge bringing down the hammer of gavels onto the confused cranium of the criminal cr-something or other. But wait - here's the more! The accident that cost Perez his legs wasn't just an accident: he was coaching his son's baseball team and got hit ON THE FIELD. Two other people were also injured, with Perez the worst. The original plea deal was for 4 years of prison, 1 year house arrest, 2 years probation, 300 hours community service, substance abuse counselling. So basically her house arrest was turned into prison time, she got an extra year of probation, but dropped 100 hours of community service hours. That concludes this edition of FUN FACTS.

Thank you for filling in the blanks! There's absolutely NO excuse for anyone to get in a car and drive impaired - "buzzed driving" or solidly self-aware plastered... And the ridiculous thing is that those who do know that they are actually not in a state to drive , that they aren't "themselves",otherwise the issue of convincing themselves wouldn't enter their minds at all when they turn that key.. and every dui driver will tell that they had that conversation with themselves because they already knew it. My mother , years ago, had a drinking issue and I thank God she never tried to drive home. She had her "neighborhood" bar and that's where her friends all were. But I do give her credit because she would go to her car, get in and lock herself in and sleep it off. She never drove. I have a special interest here , I feel, since I graduated from South Dade High, but in 1978,years before this principal was there.. but it still pisses me off. I say throw the book at them, they kill and main people who are innocent and we love and care about

It really isn't hard to NOT drive while intoxicated, it really isn't. Even when I use to drink and get FUBAR, I was still cognitive enough to NOT get behind the wheel. I'd crawl home, if I had to. If you drink and drive, you do it because you don't care about the lives of others. Edit! Listen, if you drink and drive you go to jail, simple, right? But some people have excuse after excuse. Try telling the Judge "oh, but I was drunk, I didn't know any better! I didn't mean to kill that family. I didn't mean to kill their little baby in the back seat!" See how far that gets you. in texas, its zero tolerance, not only do you get fined over $10,000 and spend time in prison, but you also deal with muuuuch higher insurance premium and license suspension, and you kill someone while DUI, you get locked up for a looooong time, and if you refuse a breathalyzer or sobriety test you go to jail, it can affect you for the rest of your life and if you harm someone in the process, you can kiss your old life good bye! its extremely frowned upon when trying to gain employment too. I always say "if you can afford to go out to a bar, then you can afford an uber, lyft, taxi, etc" and its soooo much cheaper than a $10,000 fine too, but you avoid expensive bar tabs and uber fees all together if you just drink at home, and its cheaper too than going to a bar
