I am mid level BJJ blue belt. I had done BJJ from 1999-2003 and received my blue belt in 2002. During that time I did JKD, Stick Fighting / Knife defense, and got pretty good with Muay Thai. I quit for 18 years and finally got back to it last May. I started focusing on no-gi. I found a huge flaw with my game. I am pretty good at Muay Thai, but I am very short. I am a 5' 4" 210lb guy, and my reach sucks. I always wind up in the clench, then feel like an idiot when I get there. That 4 years of training and I have nothing. So I decided that Judo could be the answer. I have been doing Judo for 6 months now. WOW it has enhanced my game by 10 fold. I have picked about 5 - 6 technics to combo and wow JUDO is CRAZY!! If you have a fighting background it is unreal on the advantage it gives, plus it so compliments the other arts above. Now that being said. My instructor shows the typical "protect your partner" throw for training and competition. Then he shows the intended throw as it was originally designed. Judo can be crazy dangerous for the opponent by a lot. Osoto Gari, or better yet, drop to knee Seoi Nage can shove a persons head smashed into ground at substantially accelerate rate of speed, and power. It could absolutely kill someone on concreate or a rock.

Judo is far more dangerous. While BJJ evolved from Judo, and the principles in Judo's ground game have been refined in Kosen Judo and BJJ, and while the chokes in BJJ can kill if taken to their full extent, all that is present in BJJ is present in Judo (some of it in Atemi and Kata, so it is not practiced in randori/sparring, but it is there). People have (unfortunately) died in modern Judo matches in the dojo, so imagine what being thrown outside in the street will do to the body.

Both my kids do both Judo and BJJ at high levels. As such I have attended countless tournaments in Judo and BJJ. In doing so I have met many of the paramedics (EMS) staff that attend the tournaments (I guess it is mandatory to have EMS on site during a tournament). The EMS guy I spoke to did martial arts and was an EMS at many Judo and BJJ tournaments. I asked him which martial art created more injuries. He said - Judo and its high impact throws, by far, created more injuries at tournaments. And injuries were often more catastrophic.

I did judo for 10 years and once i was in an argument with a bigger guy and he all of the sudden pushed me on nearby car, judo insincts kicked in and i got him into the stance (hand on the sleeve and other on his chest) and managed to get him glued into me on top of that car. To this day i dont know if i did a good thing, but i just pushed him back and got away from the car, of course he was then shouting and threatening me, but i just walked away. Every time when something happens which is aggresive and stuff i dont use judo, I am always trying to deescalate it, because I am scared that i might hurt a guy. This is a big drawback of the art for me. Instincts still kick in but i avoid slamming someone with a tai otoshi xd. And I know many people would have just slammed a guy on the ground and didnt care.

but i feel your point is kinda valid but also invalid, cuz ye as you say your instincts can kick in and potentially you could throw him harder then you thought and he would have massive damage and you could face charges and go to prison.. but at the same time you dont need to use the hardest and deadliest techniques.. there are f.ex. foot sweeps that works really well on the street and for self defence. I would say the aspect of Judo makes it positive when it comes to instinct cuz at the end of the day its either the culprit or you, its better to throw someone down and end it right there and then than nothing.

@NickKano11
@NickKano11 2 жыл бұрын
Judo can be applied incrementally. You have the option of putting someone down gently and holding them, or throwing them full force into the concrete. I had a situation 4 years ago where I took someone down gently with Osoto Gari- holding his head up to ensure it didn't hit the pavement- and then held him in Kesa Gatame until the Police turned up. No injuries whatsoever, which was good because the situation wouldn't have justified it.

Had the same Judo, Jujitsu, and kickboxing instructor since age ten. He taught in a hybrid style. I am pretty positive in most situations, most conflicts resolved, or physical altercations took only a few seconds. I’ve thought about it as for Judo, attacker has a jacket on or comes close to me they’re pretty much done regardless of whether they try to throw punches-my throws are quick on touch. It’s important to learn movement into throws, flowing into different throws, and feeling shifts in body weight. Most people aren’t in-tune with the way they shift their body weight. I’ve only had to throw one person and it nocked the wind out of him-he was in shock. Basically he was drunk and harassing a friend, took my friend away from the situation, he followed. Felt him grab a shoulder and did something like a modified Ucha Mate or Sarnaga-I don’t remember. He whipped around and feel on his side that was it. I’ve never had a reason, just walk away or avoid these things he was persistent and felt like he was trying to fight.

I kind of disagree with you about Judo! Any martial art can be very dangerous! Even BJJ. But Judo is needed to throw someone on the ground. And someone who is proficient in Judo can control a throw against someone who isn't skilled. Besides Judo has standing locks and submissions! Not much of that in BJJ. Not saying that BJJ can't deal with such situations but some guys in BJJ have a huge difficulty bringing someone down. That is why they scoot their butts on the ground and pull guard.
@y200sub
@y200sub 4 жыл бұрын
Oh man, the original Gracie Jiu Jitsu has plenty of standing locks, even wrist locks, i am usually not a big beleiver in standing locks but they are there in jiu jitsu and they work. As far as throws go, they also exist in bjj, against an untrained opponent you are generally taught how to redirect their energy to throw them and against a trained grappler you create kuzushi the same way you do in judo, problem is that plenty of bjj guys only practice the sportive aspect of the art and seldom train standing, i personally hate it when bjj guys pull guard without even attempting a takedown.

Thank you, 100% agree that judo being more dangerous. Getting slam on the ground is dangerous. Spine injuries is worse. Judo taught me not to hurt opponents or training partner or bullies/assholes to point of paralyzed for life or permanent nerve injury to the spine. Will not change a bad person to good person if person broken due to permanent spine injuries. Worse person i met is end up using drugs and on government support and extremely overweight. My first injuries was tail spine injury back when very young learning throws and breakfalls.

i agree, getting thrown in concrete is no joke, broken bones and internal organ damage. even during samurai war era, getting thrown plus the weight of their armor, then you just need to put the wakazashi or tanto in the exposed area of the armour and its over. in the battle field a samurai cant butt scoot because,swords, weapons, spears, horses,arrows are everywhere..its just one take down then put a dagger on the samurai.

@O.G. Fitness, I’d like your thoughts on self defense and the potential legal aspects. Striking is a no-go because a punch always looks aggressive, especially if they press charges and a soccer mom is on the jury. BJJ looks better in court and may be easier to control the level of force, but you’re tangled up with the person without a good way to leave. With judo, it seems that you train how to stay on your feet and against an untrained opponent can use softer techniques (say, deashi harai) to put him on the ground, giving you the chance to run away. It also doesn’t look very aggressive. Is that realistic?

Doing some HEMA. Swordfigthing like in the middleage and that stuff. There is the concept of "sociable wrestling" and "nonsociable wrestling". The first is just judo or wrestling for competitions. The second one is for battlefield, where you aim to throw the opponent on his head. Like doing a hipthrow without holding his arm. After that lesson i refuse every streetbeef, dont want to kill anybody

Given the range of motions, power and speed especially in categories like -90kg, -100kg and +100kg, judo is far more dangerous in competitions setting, and training camps (where things can't get a little crazy). In regular trainings sessions, people exercise control (most of the time). After 30+ years of practice I am happy to haved moved onto other things in one piece. The same can't be said of some of my friends and people I happen to know over the years.

Judo is versatile an can come in very handy. A train martial artist must be able to strike, lock, throw an takedown. I love Kung Fu. Kung Fu is the best at striking an counter striking. Yet, it can be one dimensional. Why?. Grappling. So, it's wise to know a little Jujitsu, Aikido an Judo an Karate. There are two different things. One is what is the danger of the martial art in use in fighting against someone else. Another is what is the danger from accidental issues or ego issues in training. Definitely judo is more dangerous in fighting because of the reasons you said. It's inherently more violent to throw people and fly into submissions. You can use a technique and the damage to the other person can range from pain to injury to death from a single technique that when you throw it you don't know how it will end. You can kill someone accidentally when fighting in the street with judo. To be honest that is similar to striking because when you punch someone it is possible that he will die. However if someone dies or gets injured in a real fight from BJJ that is because the other person *decided* to kill him or injure him. It is not accidental and you always know exactly what you are doing to the other person. Every once in a while there is some violent motion and there is a small chance of a move affecting a person more than you expected but the odds of that are like .1 percent because you practice the same movement in training with your friends day in and day out. But in BJJ with all the training there are tons of accidental injuries. Also people let their egos go and they intentionally hurt other people--at the bad schools anyway. So my question is the other issue--what is the danger in practice sessions in judo? I don't know anyone who has been in BJJ for any time who has not been injured, but my judo instructor told me he has basically never been injured (don't know if he's lying, he doesn't seem like a liar but he might shade the truth). Hey by the way, why are you trying to protect criminals who have injured or killed other people? what the heck. 16:00 If they want to incriminate themselves let them do it.

Actually, I like the free association in your videos, it's interesting to me. When I first came to Florida, already a 2nd Dan, I trained at a very good martial arts school whose founder was Vietnamese. The system is Cuong Nhu. He was an amazing man who escaped Vietnam by boat, became a PhD entomologist at UF, and created Cuong Nhu which went on to have 1000s of practitioners. I upset him one day when my shoulder dislocated while sparring and I swore! He was very stern with me that day :-)

A katana was definitely not 12 feet long. The Japanese Yari wasn't even that long. A katana was around 3 feet with longer ones closer to 3,5. BTW, Judo came specifically from Kito Ryu Jujutsu and Tenjin Shinyo Ryu Jujutsu. Jujutsu isin Japanese an umbrella term for unarmed fighting and encompasses some 1000 different styles, some of which aren't remotely similar to Judo from Kano. It's nit picky I admit, but a lot of people mistaken think this difference between the two is the, erroneous "do" vs "Jutsu" topic which is a division of these terms which doesn't actually exist in Japanese.

12:10 Is it safe for a cop to grapple with someone when they have a pistol, platon, pepper spray an all that on them? 15:30 It might be safer for a women defending herself against a man to do Judo.

12:10: probably not 15:30: most women should run against a man, the strength differential is too much, unless she has weapons.

Judo is a systemized, complete system, put together (developed/invented) by Jigoro Kano in 1880. Kano synthesized elements of different Japanese jujutsu ryus (schools), and developed the common priniciples of maximum benefit from minimum effort, and mutual benefit through individual development. Brazilian Jiujitsu came out of the Judo that Maeda taught the Gracies and others in Brazil in the early Twentieth Century.

jashard wallington JIUjitsu came from judo. Judo is essentially a school of JUjitsu. Aikido is the modern forms of aikijutsu which is a subclass of JUjitsu. When I say JIUjitsu, I’m talking about BJJ, when I say JUjitsu, I’m talking about real original japanese jujitsu. So yeah, they weren’t all one thing that was split into 3 based on specialisation. Aikido is already a separate list of schools of jujitsu. Judo is Kano Jujitsu, from which BJJ was developed. BJJ using judo’s principles but with a different approach and style.

I live in China and your description does not fit. I would be very surprised if you are actually correct about the Vietnamese community. Family and close friends come before money. Your children, parents and siblings are your most prized treasure. Money is more important than the arts, hobbies, and warm and fuzzy nonsense, but that's because they love you and they know that life can be hard. You are lucky that you grew up in Canada. Don't slander your family.

Although I passionately love Judo it's clear that the pressure put on the sport by advertisers has resulted in a unique product that demands the largest arcing throw one could imagine for a score. This Obsession for the big throw has led to more participants being injured and is a classic example where the advertising pressure has hurt a sports marketability to the General Public In contrast Brazilian jiu-jitsu took an aspect of Judo all the way to the bank by focusing on the most mundane techniques designed to work not look good on television The end result is Judo has a much higher media profile but lower participation rate while Brazilian jiu-jitsu is literally in every town in the United States yet can't draw a crowd bigger than a hot dog vendor for its World Championship
