You clearly don't understand the characters motivations nor paid attention to the dialogue that has happen. The aunt used a lie to get the grandmother to force them to abandon one of the children, she was unexpected in the birth. The actor convey great pains at that moment of making the decision to leave her new born daughter behind. She doesn't blame the daughter for anything, she is just not used to raising a girl since all she has been doing for over the last decade was raising boys and dealing with soldiers. So discipline is her highest priority not realizing she needs to change her parenting method when dealing with a girl.

@@rickmarr8784 that doesn't change the fact she was nothing but cold, dismissive and constantly showing disappointment 😒 while lavishly affection on the cousin... in front of the daughter that had zero family love up to that point? The actress did a great job showing what you specified, but as per the script she barely EXPRESSED any of that to her daughter. The writer using the old trope of poor communication for conflict and angst. The only scene showing positive emotion was possibly when the Mom slapped down whichever noble during the 1st engagement dinner 🤔

@@rasmusb43 That's because the cousin isn't unruly being a discipline book worm like her father. the mother doesn't lavish on the cousin, trust me you'll know lavish when you see it. This was kind of like small rewards like a commanding officer rewards a soldier. The cold, dismissive and constant disappointment is how she dealt with soldiers. It's a passive way of making the soldier try harder and do and be better. Of course this doesn't work on Niao Niao since she isn't a soldier nor a boy.

@@rasmusb43 The drama shows many contrasts of personalities based on how they were raised, but also based on who they are. Yuanyi (Nuan Nuan's mother) has no clue how to rais a girl, but she knows she has to raise her daughter quickly, because technically by the rules of 545AD China (pretty much exactly when this is set) Nuan Nuan is an adult and ready to be married off into another family. Her Mother is terrified that she is or will be come a person that is like the 5th Princess. (Yuanyi likely doesn't know the 5th Princess, or what she is like, but she knows the type of person *we* know the 5th Princess is.) Everyone praises the Empress for how she handles Nuan Nuan, but they forget that the Empress' Own daughter is the 5th PRincess, a spoiled vindictive individual who will use whatever power she can manipulative to achieve her ends. Yuanyi does not want he daughter to be that. She has duty and responsibility to make sure her daughter does not become that and she is trying to achieve it the only way she knows how, in a very short amount of time. This is an amazing drama because it is one where you can stop thinking of Nuan Nuan as the main character. And think oif her as just a person. And you can think of her mother as just a person. Nuan Nuan is cold, and not filial to her mother. we can feel she is justified given her circumstances. Our time period, our cultures have taught us that familial love looks different than 545AD China. Then, A Child loves their parent by showing respect to them, obeying them and being congenial. Nuan Nuan was only ever pleasant and congenial to her mother when she was attempting to manipulate. Contrasting Nuan Nuan with her Cousin. Her Cousin is nothing but softness. In order to raise such a person they can only be raised in softness, treat them like steel and they will burn or break. Yuanyi approached her daughter Nuan Nuan like she was an unforged ingot of Steel, She treated her with the fire and hammer. But Nuan Nuan was already a mostly formed blade and it took forever for the mother to realize that. Nuan Nuan would have (and did with the empress) responded better to a soft honing stone, oil and cloth to sharpen her. BUt Nuan Nuan's approach and reaction to the Empress is entirely different too.

One of the things that isn't made clear. Is She knows everything because she learned learned everything but was only ever able to confirm many of the details when showing up in person. There isn't much she could have done from a distance. Without Proof. The individuals abusing Nuan nuan, have the highest authority remaining in the household. SO in order to stop, punish or ultimately get revenge. The Aunt and grandmother would have to be caught in the act (one of the reasons, the parents come back earlier) But Yuanyi is then caught in a tough position. She knows everything done to ruin her daughter, but the very first moments she sees her daughter, Nuan nuan is being manipulative. 500 AD chinese household is also a game of politics PR and the law.

The idiot abandoned one infant, AND dragged another off to a LITERAL battlefield. So did she just like, keep the baby boy during all her fights, and stop to nurse and change him during battles? She claims to have known everything, yet if she did, then she deliberateley did nothing for all those years. She knew her daughter was growing up to be a wild child, and rather than punish the adults who she KNOWS neglected her, she turns straight innto punishing the hell out of her daughter. The mother is a disgusting piece of work when the details start getting listed.

Yes. I too thought the Western Xmas music was wild, but in C-D's expect anything to happen.

She's pretty much the worst mother in drama history LOL I mean seriously even the BAD ones haven't abandoned one newborn and ignore them for 15 years while dragging another off to be raised in the horrors of war.
