Newly discovered first generation bootleg performances from Judy's third and final opening night at The Palace, July 31, 1967. Judy sings (and recites) Over The Rainbow, Chicago, and The Man That Got Away. None of these songs appeared on the album version of the concert that was released.

It's now 2019 and I attended her concert at the Palace Theatre in 1967. It was an evening of listening her sing her hit songs coupled with one standing ovation after the other. When she sang "Over the Rainbow", the house went wild.

Utterly astonishing. This version of "Rainbow" carries an amazing emotional belt as she speaks a section of the song with exquisite timing and a searing honesty. The woman was simply a genius and remains unequalled to this day. I wish some of the miming, auto-tuned songbirds of today would take the time to listen and discover what the art of popular song should be.

NOW I understand the full magic of that opening night - what singing! What magic. So easy to see why poeple felt she could go on forever. Thanks, Buzz.

It was simply genius to speak the words in "Over The Rainbow". Whether it was a way around her sore vocal chords or purely for effect it was stunningly beautiful. There was a hysteria between Judy and her fans and it is captured here for all to witness.

When she speaks those portions of "Rainbow," she sounds like a motherwho's soothing a child woken up from a nightmare. And when she sings "Why Can't I", she is really singing "Why can't we?" I feel sad for anyone who died before 1922.

@@SaxonC For sure Judy had this audience hypnotized and would have been in a trance at this phenomenal event, nobody ever has or ever will come close to what Judy did with a song and the audience...thankfully got to see Judy as a teen 9/13/65 and what an life changing experience it was, totally a gone fan at that point & got front row seats and was in heaven, love these Palace recordings and audience involvement with Judy is stunning...truly a love fest and heard standing ovations during this Palace engagement went many nights 20+ minutes!

@@bradly2007 where did you see Judy at in September of 1965? Was it at the Houston Astrodome when it was completed and Judy opened with the Supremes as her warming up act? A friend of mine and her family were there and said the dome held approximately 100,000 people but only 20,000 people were there. She said that many wives had dragged their husbands who were making rude comments to each other and they were not fans like their wives. Later after Judy sang a couple of songs, they began screaming and shouting like all the other Judy fans. They like everyone else who attended also became new and screaming Judy fans. My friend said that the whole time Judy was on stage the air had a kind of electricity and when ever she sang everyone would get a kind of chill with goose bumps that appeared all over their bodies! God I wish I could have been there.😱😇🤔🤗♥️💞

What a unique and deeply moving "Rainbow". Astonishing that a bootleg recording of a concert from 46 years ago can still provoke such an emotional response. Thank you so much for posting this and reminding me for the thousandth time that Judy was (and remains) a truly unique and supremely talented human being. How lucky we all are that have shared a part of our lives with her. And what a delightful introduction to Harold Arlen

Fantastic. That album was such a disappointment. They left off these but put in "I loved him" & the kids cute turns. Makes no sense now that I hear this. AND that critic back then who wrote of this concert "the voice is just a memory..." I hope he choked on a newspaper. People forget or don't know that her vocal chords were ripped up by that Hong Kong stomach pumping in '65. She was & is a miracle. Thanks so much for posting

Well put. Its got to be frustrating, when you just are not 100% sure what your voice will do. It will not act the same on Tuesday, as it did on Monday and audience expectations do not fluctuate. She has found some solutions, just as so many other great singers have. Some can find greater emotional depth, along with the tricks of the 'trade' .

Last A section "blue birds fly" 12:08-12:42 has anyone ever heard recordings of her phrasing it this way? wow. and the energy in the room when she sings that final phrase. ec·sta·sy 1. rapturous delight. 2. an overpowering emotion or exaltation; a state of sudden, intense feeling. 3. the frenzy of poetic inspiration. 4. mental transport or rapture from the contemplation of divine things.

Thanks for the reply....yes I also have the ABC Lp At Home at the Palace. I think I first picked up a copy in the mid 1970's. However, I was referring to the above "bootleg" recording....I was hoping THIS recording was available in it's entirety....the sound quality is great compared to most of the live show tapes I've acquired through the years.

If only they dropped the key down a major third (4 semitones) on these songs from about 1965 onwards, Judy would have had an easier go of it. Even though she was only 45 in 1967, the years of smoking, late nights etc. had its toll on her voice. I will forever love Judy, but here, at the Palace - let's just say Carnegie Hall in 1961 is a very distant memory.

@@hudsony777 Check out the 1961 Carnegie Hall version - that's when she had THE VOICE ! (I've always wondered, in her last years, if the cocktail of prescription drugs she took, dried, and damaged her vocal cords. Interesting to ponder. bob)
@CharlieChilders-wm9gb
@CharlieChilders-wm9gb 3 жыл бұрын
@@hudsony777 this is all so very true however, people do not realize that from 1950 to 1969 (according to Lorna luft) she wrote that Judy had appeared in over 1200 documented concerts and a few years later she stated over 1500 concerts). She never had no time to rest and recuperate her health and voice. Sid luft (her husband and manager) in 1950 was the salvation of Judy but at the same time the destruction. Ray bolger (scarecrow in"wizard of Oz" said Judy didn't die, she just plain wore out!🤔👎
