Performed by Judy Garland and Margaret O'Brien in the film 'Meet Me in St. Louis', 1944. This is a High Quality, Full Screen Close Up. I also included an audio excerpt of Margaret O'Brien from Larry King Live, with photo overlay. She tells an endearing story about 'The Cake Walk Hat', Judy's gift to her. ... Of all her talents - singing, acting, dancing - Judy found her greatest love with children.
Under The Bamboo Tree
Words and music by Robert Cole and J. Rosamund Johnson, 1902
ESTHER
Down in the jungles lived a maid
Of royal blood though dusky shade
TOOTIE
A marked impression once she made
Upon a Zulu
ESTHER
From Matabooloo
TOOTIE
And every morning he would be
Down underneath the bamboo tree
ESTHER
A Waitin' there his love to see
TOOTIE
And then to her he's sing
BOTH
To her he'd sing
If you like-a me, like I like-a you and we like-a both the same
I like-a say this very day, I like-a change your name.
'Cause I love-a you and lov-a you true and if you-a love-a me
One live as two, two live as one
Under the bamboo tree

So lovely hearing people talk about Judy how she really was - she was a very kind, generous and humourous lady and thats how she should be rembered

You are exactly correct. I wish people would quite emphasizing her "personal problems"! It was M-G-M that had Judy all screwed up (and her mother, too)! Judy was such a huge talent! Thank you for the very kind and nice comment!!!

Margaret O'Brien was a child actress not a singer, and yes it's true she can't carry a tune, but she is a good little actress. This is a wonderful story about Judy that Margaret told, and is exactly how I picture her being. Very kind and loving. I can see her being esp. Kind to children bc she knew 1st hand how unkind the studios could be

She carries the tune fine. She's just got a 7 year olds voice, and little breath support in this recording. It's cute, I think.

because Judy was a professional, did that work from the age of 12 years. Margaret was a girl with no experience. look great together. Judy is so sweet with her

I think that Judy Garland was so generous and caring. I really believe she was the kind of person that would do without so she could give to others. She would always give the other guy a break, even at her own expense. She had a very kind and generous spirit. She knew what it was like to be treated unkindly

1:16 - 2:20 is one take! You don’t see that these days unless it’s a dramatic monologue or an action sequence. What a gifted woman and fantastic director. Vincente Minnelli was to Judy Garland professionally, as Bob Fosse was to Liza Minnelli.

Saw this movie on TCM last night and fell in love with Tootie all over again--that child was so adorable. Judy was the star of this wonderful family film but Margaret O'Brien was its beating heart, with her wildly vivid imagination and sweet spirit.

The bit where they walk with the hats and canes reminds me a bit of when she did A Couple of Swells with Fred Astaire

In the couple of swells number, Judy blew Freds doors off. He was out of his element, he was white tie and tails, not tramp clothes, blacked out teeth, and a 5 o'clock shadow. Judy stoled that whole number as soon as she walked out on the stage. Fred didn't stand a chance. When she came out on the stage with that look on her face, she owned the audience.

I just love Judy Garland, I gre up watching her movies, all of them are great , but, I think this one is my fav. My mom saw her perform @ the London Paladium & said she was just fantastic, when she was done...she came back out for an encore & asked the audience if they minded if she took off her shoes cuz her feet hurt (she had gained a little weight then) they just applauded & applauded...she sat down on the edge of the stage & sang & talked for another hour. Who does that these days. Awesome!

The "Cake Walk" originated in the south in the 19th century. It was originally danced at dancing contests and it got its name because the lucky couple winning the dance contest were awarded - guess what? A very large cake. Imagine living in a time where the focus of such a contest was on fun and community, with the coveted prize being a cake? Today, some would expect a prize of at least $500 and a pair of iPhones.

+Gunnar Thorsen the cake walk is rooted in slavery. Slaves would pretend to to walk or strut like their oppressors or, as u ppl call them, their "masters". It was exagerated so when the terrorist or "master" saw them doing it they just took it as an entertaining and funny dance. They slave who could do the best dance or act like the biggest fool would get a piece of cake ( a lot like my ppl today) but just like everything else this story just gets twisted until no one knows the truth anymore smh

Gunnar Thorsen Really..... imagine living in a time where you were stolen raped beat sold, and if you entertained. masta Whitey... you'll get a dam cake.. no money no dam iPhone no day off, you didn't win your freedom, imagine a time? none of us I would suggest you research history and, see just how imaginative it was....

Margaret O'Bien's story about studio boss L B Mayer highlights the total control studios routinely exercised over its workers, including the mind games played and mental cruelty exerted. Here's a 7 year old being given a horse and having a red dress made expressly for her, only to have Louie Mayer confiscate both. Even if Mayer could justify stealing back the gift horse, why would he take a cherished red dress away from a 7 year old? What's the point? He need it for studio wardrobe? Ridiculous.
