I saw this on the actual first broadcast in 1968. I was 19. I burst into tears then, and I still do every time I watch it. Just stunning, Judy. I miss you.

An astonishing performance. She sits in a chair. No special lighting. No staging. No large orchestra backup, just her with a mike and a lovely song (by John Meyer). As she tells the story, the audience gets progressively quieter until they're swallowed whole. At the end, instead of the habitual, Tonight Show, instant loud applause, there are unexpected seconds of silence. Only afterwards can the audience come back to earth..

You see when Judy sings "Till After the Holidays" she walks the fringe between sadness and understanding. Reminds me of when Barbra had to give up Hubble. She kept it together.

Andrea Marcovicci did a recording of it about 30 years ago. It's pretty easy to track down (though it doesn't pack the emotional punch Garland's rendition does).

This is the only performance of this tune that I know of - and given the zillion times she sang so many songs, I wonder how this might have developed as she continued in her artistic career...and of course, if she had already sung it a zillion before, how might it have evolved up till December 1968? You could write a book about each performance she gave...

Her voice was gone. But Godamn she could still pull out the stops with an innate ability to perform before an audience. .
@elspethcoogan1499 Жыл бұрын
Her voice wasn’t “gone”; it had changed. It transformed into a more raw, weary timbre that reflected her own physical and emotional scars. Her voice, her instrument, had indeed seen better days but by golly this (and similar performances in her latter years) rendition illustrates a beauty that transcends peak virtuosity.
@younghove779 жыл бұрын
she sounds so busted. Years of messing with Dope ruined her. This was probably one of her last performance. Its evident there isn't much left in her.
@roberthenleynola5 жыл бұрын
Even at this point, certainly not her best, she had more to give than you or I. She was a marvelous talent, and she proved it (and shared it with us) until the day she died.
