While the pregnant lady is talking about her freedom to have a career, being treated as second class citizen, she in turn is treating the maid as a third class citizen.

You missed the way the pregnant woman treated the maid. She could have offered her a better cup but she looked for a cheap steel cup/glass to serve her instead. Women with high status treat other women poorly as well.

The thing with the cups...Parbatiya,the maid, was given tea in an old steel cup instead of the delicate China cups because she was a maid and hence, inferior. It was a very subtle way of pointing out the the hold that caste system still has on Indian society.

I am actually a Sri Lankan female living in Australia and I for one can vouch that our people haven't forgotten to bring this patriarchal mindset along with them during the migration. This definitely happens in my family, and at the Sri lankan dinner parties I go to. I'd be called as a guest and then be asked to serve snacks to the men along with the other young girls...why don't they ask the host's son to do that? Now I just sit there when I'm asked to serve...I don't bother getting up. The men and women always have to sit in separate rooms. And the guys in my own generation, my own cousins, behave like this too. They expect their wives to serve them food every day! I personally have done what this lady did, and forcibly inserted myself into their "manly" conversations during get togethers - now they're somewhat used to it. It baffles me that they think men and women cannot sit and socialise together! Disgusting mindset and it definitely exists. If it exists all the way here in Australia, I can only imagine how much worse it'd be in India!

gypsyco lab Its called internalised misogyny. It means when an individual enacts sexist actions and attitudes towards themselves and people of their own sex. For example women themselves not wanting daughters or if they have daughter they feel their education isn't important and treat them inferior to their sons. Because daughter will now grow watching all this so she might do this to her daughter and it goes on until someone in line decides its wrong and changes their behavior. Like its said it takes an empowered women to raise empowered children.

The cup thing was 'discrimination against the maid'. Everyone got a ceramic cup, but the maid was given a steel cup to drink out of. That's why the Maid says 'Its okay I gotta go anyway, I don't want it'. She left feeling discriminated, insulted, unwanted. She works there everyday and became a part of their family but the Prego still made her realize that she is just a maid & not one of them, definitely not an equal.

The different cup started because of Caste system- Untouchablity. Yes, they don't practice the untouchablity the way they used to be few decades back, but there are still many fragments running - one of which is the separate cup

They did a really good job at playing with the sounds, from the very beginning, the background sounds of utensils and men talking loudly, it did a really good job at making me feel suffocated. And when she came out in front of the men, the music turned it into a very soothing and breathable environment. In the beginning, when the camera follows the ladies in the kitchen, took us from that narrow corridor to the women's world, like an air pocket in a cave.

N I only got one ans "because u r a girl" But my father, grandpa never asked me to behave as a girl.. Instead they help my mom and grandma in their chores even after 10 to 10 job if needed.. But they never show the society that they help us.. If some guest comes and their helping on sunday or otherwise they leave what they were doing and pretend not helping... They totally understand and respect women but society donot.. So mom always reminds me that I am a girl coz she knows if I'm married some day.. It's not necessary i'll find a man like my father or grandfather..

Yes! A lot of households in India are this backward. And it is safe to say that more than half the male population in India thinks like that and argues over stuff like female anatomy versus male anatomy and call themselves physically stronger while they sit on a chair all day at home and offices while their wives do actual physical labor.

More than the short movie, what I liked was Jaby's reaction. He was so sensitive and shaken after seeing the torments which almost every woman goes through in our society. Being brought up in an Indian society I could never imagine a guy reacting to this which so much sensibility. But we can't blame guys , everyone is equally responsible. Because this is how they are brought up- girls are taught to do household chores , while guys are allowed to chill right from childhood. EQUALITY should lie in mind. Not just in books and quotes.

"But we can't blame guys , everyone is equally responsible" ??? We can actually, and we must, because its them that top the dynamic they established. Where's the woman's fault that she was taught as a child to be a slave to her brother/father/husband? And she teaches her daughter what she knows?

It happens in most of Indian families. But thankfully, I'm one of those fortunates family where male helps females in cooking, cleaning up, serving and everything. What happens in my house is that whenever someone comes in our house, my mom and dad cooks food together and me and my brother do other little works so no one feels burderned. My mom cooks everything if some males come to our house surprisingly and same happens when any of my mom's friend comes unexpectedly, like in that case, my father cooks food but avoid serving because he doesn't going in front of ALL the LADIES. 😊😊😊😊😊

It is a very realistic portrayal of a middle class north indian household. The men in the drawing room and women supposed to be in the kitchen. Though you missed certain subtle nuances. For eg the lady giving steel cup to serve tea to the maid instead of a cup reflects the class and caste hierarchy in between women and india in general. Also the discussion about kids show differing opinions within the female gender. And the narration in the beginning kind of sets that. A very good reaction though. I'm a big fan😊😊😍

I come from an Indian family and I can't express enough how real this is. My mom is exactly treated like this and although she complains to me at the end of the day, she's not strong enough to complain to the men... What was most relatable to me is that child whose taught to serve as a younger age. Even though I wouldve rather played around as a kid, it was shameful for me being the eldest daughter and not serving my dad, uncles, their friends.

Men have oppressed women for CENTURIES and dont get compared to genocidal groups of people even though MILLIONS of women are raped, assaulted, married as children, murdered, aborted directly because of male supremacy. But you get anonymous sexist comments against men on the internet and suddenly those sexist women are the next Hitlers

One of my most, most favorite short stories and it was so good to see you all reviewing it! I watched it again. It was so, so touching. I am indian in India now and I am extremely fortunate to have a husband who is beyond helpful in every aspect of the running of our home (it's OUR home and we are equals) and in laws who may have expectations but understand and aren't demanding it right now. There however IS the fear of "what people may think" which push these expectations more. I have seen this in many households and this has to change. Jaby, I am very touched with your sweet, compassionate, sensitive, thoughtful response to this. We definitely need more men like you! Keep up the wonderful work Jaby. And I love you Achara!

Well you guys reviewed it really really well, one of the things it also touched subtly, which you guys didn't get (but you did react when you saw it, you just didn't understand it) because it's more of an Indian thing was caste-bias or well say class-bias (more apt terminology), where you saw them offering the maid a cup of tea in a steel glass and not in the ceramic cup that they were having in. Sadly, stuff like that still prevails in India where servants eat leftovers (I guess and hope that happens rarely), they use different utensils for them and not the ones that owners use and things like that. But, such practices are coming to an end as our societies are getting more progressive. This was a really good film and great reaction and discussion by you three :)

@harshchandola4103
@harshchandola4103 6 жыл бұрын
Well, the cups would be eventually washed after, right? I'd appreciate if you could elaborate on the hygiene hazard that'd justify that. Only scenario that comes into my head is when the person (or servant) has a communicable disease where then it's smart to quarantine in that way but other than that it appears more of a bias, doesn't it? anyway I was targeting the bias aspect of it which in my opinion is mostly the reason behind such customs being followed. If this is done for a logical reason then maybe it's alright. Here in this video, it clearly wasn't a hygiene issue.
@sherinjohn1328
@sherinjohn1328 6 жыл бұрын
Harsh Chandola actually our maid consumes tobacco and eventually my mom use to give her the normal cups and we all were using those cups but those tobacco stains use to not go and then my mom had to switch it so she gave her one fancy own cup which is used by her only and even we as a family have our own cups and use our individual personal cups

I entirely agree with Jaby. It has to be BOTH. For any smooth, organic transition towards equality, it has to be both the erstwhile oppressor and erstwhile oppressed working together. Here, them being men and women. It applies to other cases too. So to defeat the caste system in India, the oppressed castes need to become empowered and the dominant castes need to realise how the system is set up to benefit them and only if both work together can equality be achieved smoothly. Similarly, for races and classes too.

Jaby, You noticed other women were not really helping her?? They just talk. Actually not really sharing her mental and physical load. Edit: And some people pointed out the maid and the cup thing. SO basically women are kinda habituated and accepted the the imbalance as the right and logical thing. In short women are the greatest enemy of women.

Indrajit Majumdar Men perpetuate misogyny to the point where women have to internalize it to survive. Pitting women against each other keeps misogyny alive. This is clearly shown in the handmaids tale, where older women are used to keep younger women in line but neither of them have true power in a patriarchal system. It's the cycle of internalized misogyny
@araani8740
@araani8740 6 жыл бұрын
Indrajit Majumdar My theory is that some women who don't have power in relationships with their significant other feel like they have to exert power over someone with less power than them to feel like they're in control of something i.e. the maid. But it can also go the other way like Shefali Shah's character, who sees her maid as an equal because she understands what its like to feel "less than"

I absolutely agree Arrani M. I feel the roots comes from the differentiation between earning and non earning members. So making women well educated and earning will help reduce the problem. But then I think about a independent but unmarried woman with a child. Will our schools let the child in if she ask? They will ask whats the father's name.

My grandmother died 2 months ago. Her entire life she served her husband and 6 children. She was married at the age of 12 or 13. When her children grew up and got married, had kids. One of her son's (who lives in grandma's house) daughter was abnormal from birth, and my grandmother took care of her since the birth of kid. My grandpa never let granny go out and stay in her kids or relatives house more then 2 or more days(caz they needed her in the house). At last moments before her death but sickness, only my mom was taking care of her and the son of her had sent daughter-in-law to take care of her in hospital. The entire 75+ years of my grandmother was nothing but serving, even soldiers get a retirement but not the housewife. Atleast soldiers get respect and are awarded and taken care of. But my grandmother had none. I am sorry grandma.(I didn't try to tell the story for likes, I don't even care of that . Thing is , I just have lot of guilt within and am just typing)

These kind of short films make it sound like all that men do is sit and drink and have fun. Most of rural Indain men toil day and night just to come home crash out. And repeat. They take of their families and help the women in all ways possible.

Arjun Dev Dewan I agree it is not a rural setup. But does the short film echo your opinion on middle class India too? Men laze around and have fun while women slog? I believe this short film tells the story of this household. But if Juice seeks to stand as the expression of vindication for the Indian women who are prejudiced in a household with violence and bias, I appreciate it. But I see it as a movie where a person was married to a jerk and has planned to give the spouse a piece of their mind. This can be true for a marriage in any country in the world irrespective of gender.

Wiki Reactions Absolutely women work hard in rural areas doing extreme physical labour and tasks too. I just felt that the movie was dealt more with a particular household rather than a generalised norm in India.
