Second in Command: A Veep Rewatch

2 жыл бұрын

Do we have a treat for you today Second in Commanders. Today on the pod, we have a very special guest. Holding the record for the most Primetime Emmy wins as an actor for the same role, this actress goes by many names. Some call her Veep, Selina Meyer, a comedy legend, and many more. Today we’re hanging out with the queen herself: Julia Louis-Dreyfus!
Matt and Julia take a stroll down memory lane as they catch-up as long time co-stars. Julia recalls how she developed the iconic character and how becoming President was not always the plan for Selina Meyer. She also talks about how it was her idea to have the main character shit her pants in the first season. Trust me you don’t want to miss this one!

I tell you, Selina Meyer is the character that only Julia could have done justice. She was made for it, and it was made for her.

Julia is a national treasure. So talented, funny and genuine. She is one of those rare people that just look better with age. Her and Billie Joe Armstrong are the only two celebrities that I can think of I can say that about. I look back at her in the 90s and it’s like, yea I guess she’s attractive, but now I’m like, WOW! In a fantasy world I would be dating her and she is almost twice my age, and in that same fantasy world, Billie Joe would be my best friend.

I knew succession must've had some of Veep's writers, such expertise in the roasting art isn't that common. PS: Broom + wig = Tim. Still roasting Jonah in 2022, it will never get old.

It took probably 11 watches to finally catch the hilarious egg in that ep Julia is talking about with all of the huge Meyer posters hidden in a closet. There's a moment that lasts no more than 2 ½ seconds where Catherine says something and Selina gazes out pensively and does the exact same pose she's doing on the blown up cover of the Times Magazine poster directly behind her. It's so dang funny and shows the multilayered jokes in every scene, some whom you may not catch until your 15th watch even.

I know that Sue worked for Laura Montez at the White House so that's why she wasn't around for most of Season 5 through season 7. So I wonder if Sufe Bradshaw the actress who played Sue was written off on purpose? She was such an integral part to the ensemble from seasons 1 to 4. I wonder if there was drama going on behind the scenes that led her not becoming part of the show anymore. If they really wanted her back, the producers and writers could have just written scenes that featured her in the White House for season 5. 6. and 7. She only had a minor cameo in the Finale episode and the only characters she even interacted with was only Amy and Jonah.

I heard that Julia's meetings she had with Tony Roach and the producers separately after table reads where conversations on how to kill the rest of the cast. Supposedly, Julia would have a stern look and would constantly talk about hiring hit men to whack the cast when they were in vulnerable positions like when sitting on the toilet on set. I may be wrong because my informant was someone from the Seinfeld cast that was never part of VEEP. Or it might have been the cat tranquilizer pills I've been taking to conquer my diarrhea. But, that's neither here nor there.

Pity no Australian network picked this up. Guess I'll binge it on a streaming service when I finally get sick of Seinfelds. That's still on FTA rotation 6 episodes a week. Producer's note: Lower the mics next time for us KZfaqrs. Malcolm Turnbull was our PM who ripped Continuity and Change. Boy did he get laughed out of the joint for that!

Hey guys -- loved, loved Veep. But the podcast? This is actually a VISUAL medium. Placing the mics so faces are only half seen, especially Julia's (mic aimed at her eyebrows), is just lame. We'd like to SEE the people talking. Why can't the mics can't be six inches lower? Seriously.

@@neilharris9679 Good Knowledge, My Friend:) Club record goalscorer but made the worst Managerial decision in my time attending and this is my 7th decade of going to matches:).Picture the scene. Last 16 F A Cup Replay at Rochdale after he played a weakened team and by now he knows we would be at home to Spurs and one match from Wembley Semi-Final. Never won The Cup since we were formed in 1888 and only one Final appearance and now a great chance if he brings back his First XI ESPECIALLY as we were the ONLY team in the second tier with NOTHING to play for(We could not go up or down unlike every other team) so he ONCE AGAIN plays the second team and we lose 1/0. By the time the Subs were on , it was too late and Rochdale from the bottom division held Spurs and earned a fortune from the replay. Rant Over,My Friend:)
