Hello friends,
This obviously was not the update that I wanted to share but unfortunately, I did not get an offer. Truthfully, I wasn't overly enthusiastic about this company at the beginning, but as I learned more about role and engaged with the team I genuinely felt like I could have been a great fit. It's also one of those situations where after investing so much time and energy, you start having that sunk-cost fallacy feeling where you just want the offer to validate all that effort.
I don't want to be dramatic but rejection really does suck. Behind the scenes, not everything is as polished and swift as it seems on social media or LinkedIn. I wanted to share more of a candid glimpse into the rollercoaster of emotions that come with job hunting. Even though I do believe that I am a great candidate and have a strong background, it’s been difficult for me to get interviews and get an offer too.
If you're on the same boat, I hope this video and series continue to give you encouragement. This is all apart of the journey and I hope that we all stay resilient and don't give up 💪
xx,
Julia

I work as a Data Engineer and I spent about 6 months looking for my current role, funny thing is for almost every month I was interviewing for a company I could see myself working in but I was always rejected. I cried just like you did, maybe even worse, lol. And I doubted myself so much but when its for you it’s gonna come easy, i tell you! Its not a rejection, just a redirection! 8 stages is no joke and to get to the final round, you’re a freaking bad ass! I’m rooting for you!

Thank you for being so raw and vulnerable with dealing with rejections. Speaking from personal experience and from hindsight, the rejections we receive are all part of leading us to the right opportunity for us. When it happens, you know it will all be worth it and everything happens for a reason. Each interview you go through is also making you even better so that when it comes to the right job, you'll be even better equipped for it to get it. I hope you are finding some encouragement during this time and I just know that your next role will be something that is perfect for you ❤

I just wanted to say filming this process is really helpful for a lot of us who are/have been unemployed or are job searching. I interviewed for a job recently that I knew I would have been great at and was rejected and told by the hiring manager it was a one point difference between me and the hired candidate. It was so demotivating and I beat myself up over it for days. At the end of the day we know we are capable and intelligent, this whole process is extremely taxing and emotionally damaging at times. Remember your worth and use the support around you, all the best xx

In the last 8 years, there was a boom in the "data science" degree wihich is much easier than a computer science or computer engineering degree. Right now, so many candidates with "data scientist" as a degree as it sound sexy are out of a job 1 year or more.....many of them are trying to pivot to AI/Machine learning by throwing in "key phrases" to just get interviews.

I feel for you on the job rejections. Being on the job market since September of last year due to the place I worked at had mass layoff, pretty much the whole company, all I can say is it'll get better. Finally came across some part-time work, in a field that isn't my ideal, but it's work at least until summer since it's only during the school year. Still looking for full-time work, and though life happens, you just gotta keep putting the applications out and think positively. One door closes. Another one opens. And sometimes, you just gotta think outside the box. Hope the Asia trip goes pleasantly, and will keep you, me and and us all in prayers that we get that perfect job that's for us for those that's having to look for work at this time. And, will post here as well when I get that full-time work offer as well.

Julia, please don't cry. I've been through six rounds of interviews with the same big tech company several times, and each time, I was rejected without any feedback. After the second rejection, I started to see it as free job interview practice. Sometimes, when the big tech company reached out, I was too busy to respond, so I turned them down. I've been in the IT industry since 1992 when I first looked for a job in the newspaper. I can assure you that you're going to be great, and one day you'll look back on this and laugh. Most importantly, you haven't wasted any time being unemployed. Your KZfaq videos are very helpful and motivating to viewers.

It's so emotionally draining, but you definitely build resilience to the process. I recently saw on another vid talking about how although politicians keep saying there's many jobs available, it's being worded to hide the fact that many fields (including tech) don't actually have roles open, they're doing what they did to Julia and basically keeping job seekers on hold in case anything comes up.

I used to be very angry and frustrated at first, but then I shifted my mentality to be happy for that person. What if they were in the same situation as me and this was finally their offer after months of rejection? What if their financial situation was worse and they couldn't afford to get rejected again? This was the only way for me to not be so hard on myself and move on to the next. Now, I finally have a job that's better than the one I was rejected from. Rejection is truly redirection! Thank you for being transparent with us, Julia I am in a similar boat. I get contacted by recruiters, have great interviews and rounds, and get positive feedback that I am what the company is looking for. All of this…just to be told that they went with an internal candidate I’ve learned in the past couple months that companies either already had an internal candidate in mind or weren’t actually planning to hire for the role, but posted the listing just to build a talent list for the future I see so many LinkedIn posts from talent and recruiting staff taking so positively about their hiring processes and how “people” are at the core of what they do. Unfortunately, employees and candidates are simply seen as assets, so I think it’s good to take measures to protect ourselves both mentally and professionally Please keep your head up, just as I am trying to. I found your job searching series at the perfect timing! I recently got rejected after a great interview and I felt so frustrated after I got the mail. I don't know the reason, why they rejected me and my self esteem was so low. All of my friends have a stable job and I felt like the only one "failing". But then I found your series on the same day as I got rejected and it helped me so much to know that there are a lot of other people struggling to get a job and that rejections are normal and that you just have to continue. The right job will come! It will take time and patience, but I believe everyone can do it, if you put yourself out there! Good luck to everyone!

I really appreciate you making this video. I’ve been going through something similar. People don’t realize how huge of an impact something like this can have on your mental health. The job market has been insane recently and I think its amazing that you’re able to feel the feels but then pick yourself up and continue to put in the work to make sure you’re joining a company that you will be happy to work at. Wishing you all the best, you got this!

Wow this has been an incredible video. I relate to you so much. I applied to a Social Media Manager role last March and the company was impressed with my experience and skills. I did two round of interviews and they all seemed positive. Until they rejected me and said they were moving forward with another candidate. It sucked so much because I was excited and I felt like the company was the right fit for me. It also didnt help that the rejection happened during the week that I was having a difficult time in school too. It took me a while to get over it but I eventually see it as a positive thing that I was good enough that i got to be interviewed and that they were impressed by me. Keep pressing on! You got this 💪🏼

This reminds me of the heartbreak of Julia being rejected for that "perfect" apartment, only to find the AMAZING one she has now! So many are in this place right now, including my daughter and so many of the people watching. For everyone I am reminded of the line from the song my grandmother used to sing- "Aren't you glad that troubles don't last always?" I know that everyone will get to the other side- in the meantime I am certainly going to click Julia's link to check out Notion- I've been waiting for the right time!

Julia, thank you for being so honest with your viewers! I'm sure you'll do well and you'll definitely work your way up to where you can do your best. After my internship ended, I was heartbroken that I didn't get the chance to stay with my favorite team and was terrified of finding my first serious job. Especially that I decided to test myself and take a more challenging path. I believe I was incredibly lucky that a recruiter found my resume and the product owner with the team decided to take me on right away, despite needing a lot of experience for the position. I'm just starting my journey and the unknown scares me so much, but my colleagues are very kind and supportive. Also, my grandma says that everything that happens in life happens for the best, and fate will always give us something much better ❤

Not to Julia, but to others that might be motivate by this clip - Gonna be realistic here - it’s a very tough year in the job market and it is unwise to quit your job at this time because you’re gonna compete with many other candidates that has been laid off, and because you don’t get a severance pay makes your finance situation worse than those who been laid off, that makes your situation more stressful than theirs. Need some wise advice? Don’t quit now, hang in there, wait for the next economic boom.

Agreed and as a 50+ year old professional still "working" on career advancement.... Even when the job market is good ... quitting without something else lined up is taking a big risk. You're trading whatever stress or unhappiness from being employed for potentially short term happiness that may quickly transition into a different source of stress as a job seeker especially now given the state of hiring, the market, etc. Though times have greatly changed since I was much younger, traditional / larger companies gravitate towards pursuing people they want that are currently employed. No doubt there are exceptions to this, i.e. you are the true rockstar in your field and do have that power to be instantly hireable but that's not the case for most of us. I sincerely hope Julia finds (and lands) a great new opportunity

Oh, Julia. Big hugs virtually. I need you to understand (read: NEED, out of love) that there is plenty of variables that are out of our control when it comes to job searching. Rejections from it say ZILCH about your capabilities, especially when the recruiter said so too! as a recent graduate with no "real" experience, although I am not a tech girlie, I have been struggling with all the job searching etc., I have been rejected but it's been just a few companies who actually take the time to deliver those news, even if bad, most of them just ghost. I found you when u posted the first episode of these series and it's been nice to see you get through all of it, I got emotional when you were vulnerable because I too, have felt like I'm not good enough, and while now I'm working on getting that experience myself with my own projects, it still hits to feel like you aren't good enough, but you are, and you are a very nice person. Tomorrow I have an interview, first round, sent some of my work and they contacted me, we'll see how it goes, but the mindset I'm trying to implement instead is to think that if they didn't hire me it's cause it wasn't for me, something better is coming. I'm sending u a big hug!

Not many people can say that ❤ I will say my ex-husband worked in tech and it’s was unbelievably hard to get jobs. He would be the only SQL data (something) within the company usually. This is why you dont quit your job until you have another job lined up. Your resume showing you are currently working looks better than a resume that shows you are not currently working that might have been the edge. Hiring managers/recruiters are usually bias about this, also with what school you graduated from. You're suffering from imposter syndrome, everyone gets that and me as a software engineer also feel the same way at times. At least you got a recruiter to call you back to let you know, most will get a email saying they were not moving forward with their application and never hear from the recruiter again and they don't even offer feedback on why you was passed up on to improve on. As someone who is also on the job hunt, this process sucks but have to stay resilient and positive.

@@M.A.D.C.J getting laid off is better cause for one at least you get to apply for unemployment which is something instead of nothing by quitting. Managers and recruiters are understanding of being laid off cause it usually means the company could no longer afford to keep you or something related to company finances
