Hello friends,
Happy Sunday! In this video, I'm deep in the weeds of studying as my interviews start to ramp up. As I try to tackle data science product sense/case interviews, I've noticed a lack of dedicated resources in this area. Unfortunately for these types of interviews, you do gain a lot of knowledge from 1. real-world application & workplace experience and 2. just going through the actual interviews as trial and error. If you have DS/even product manager friends, a great way to study is to ask them to give you a mock interview. There are a lot of frameworks out there but I've linked my favorite below. As always, I hope you enjoy :)
xx,

Hi Julia, I love the simple and clean editing of your videos, and the way that you balance insight into the job application process of a data scientist with your every day life in New York City. I transitioning to a data scientist position from mining engineer so your videos are incredibly helpful in that regard. Also the transitions in between (aka living your life) make it so much more interesting and watchable rather than a cut and dry "How To Land a Job as a Data Scientist" type videos or articles.

As someone who went through tech interviews (while still employed) during this absolutely brutal tech market ... I have to assume your prior company did something very toxic to you in order for you to just leave a company everyone you are now competing with would kill to work for ? These are some of the best interview process vlogs I've seen though!

Would you consider making a video about what recruiters mean when they ask a specific question, etc. since you've been on both sides? I had a test task last week that went well, then I had an interview and they sent me a generic message on Friday which is usually "we found someone who's values align more, bla bla" Like, I've been getting that response for months now, and I'm so confused, even thought it's for legal reasons, like what do they actually mean if you did well on the test and interview was nice? idk. I hope you land a job soon! Enjoy your time off!💜
@Updog89
@Updog89 2 ай бұрын
Just my experience so take it with a HUGE grain of salt, but when I get these messages and I look into it, this often turns out to be one of 3 things. That they went with an internal candidate (most common outcome), they went with someone with a very similar resume as me and I was probably their 2nd or 3rd choice, or they didn’t hire anyone at all. The last one is actually super common, idk why companies go through the trouble only to never fill the role but they do.

@@Updog89 when it comes to going with an internal candidate, companies are legally required to advertise the job even if they know there's an internal candidate they're going to hire for it, which leads to people applying, and for some reason I guess they interview them anyway???? bizarre and stupid :/

I'm a part of the interview/hiring process for our team. So while this may not help with initial recruiter interviews it may help for a final. It's kind of our job to make sure everyone feels comfortable and doing a good job so they can relax during the interview. When they're too nervous it's not a great interview because they make mistakes or they won't show much personality or their personality just comes off as extremely nervous and we hardly choose them. On the contrary, sometimes when they feel too comfortable they slip up and get a bit too unprofessional. I know it's a job, and it's supposed to only be technical but we're looking for good personality for our team just as much. We don't want to work with someone who has a huge personality clash. Depending on the position and pay we get dozens of applications and we always pick at least 5-10 interviews. I don't want to spend weeks of my time interviewing people. We pick the best of the applicants, so if you're picked for an interview everyone else who's picked already has the same basic skills and application. They're all technically skilled enough to join our team, so we need something more. We need to like you. We do basic questions to see if you're lying on your resume and maybe throw in tougher ones to see who is more advanced between the interviewees. If I have a short interview it's because they didn't pass basic screening and I already know I'm not going to pick them so I ask a few more basic questions, say they did great and move on. If I ask more questions or advanced questions, I'm just getting to know you, your potential skills, what you're willing to learn and where you might fit in the company. Internal people will always get first pick because they're just easier to hire. They know the company, they don't have to go through a hiring/onboarding process once I pick them, they have connections that could help us within the company, and we need to write a response of why the external person is better if there was an internal applicant with the same skills- It's just overall easier. There was a couple of times we didn't pick anyone (not often). We interviewed 5 people and didn't like any of them, so we just reached back into the applicant pool and picked 5 more. If we don't like them either, we'll just repost the job listing and see if we get anyone new. We're only allowed to that twice though so second batch has a higher chance of being hired.

Holy shit so every interview is like 4-5 steps each taking an hour or so...not good. Also maybe it's just me but I think they are asking way too much on that "product case" interview. I can see "burnout" spelled all over it. It's like they are asking you to fill several positions at once.
