democracynow.org - In releasing the trove of DNC and Podesta emails during the 2016 campaign, was WikiLeaks staying true to its radical transparency mission by refusing to engage in partisan politics? Or was WikiLeaks recklessly bolstering the Trump and the Republicans? For more, we speak with activist and journalist Allan Nairn and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Purposeful obfuscation. Allan Nairn knows damn well that WIkileaks entire purpose is as a Source protector... There is literally no other reason for why it was made. So if he frames and shifts the conversation away from the content.. And to a moot topic, He is able to kill time and limit the debate. Propaganda 101. Information is the enemy.

The Lesser Evilism topic was brought up to stifle debate and control the conversation. It was disgusting. The Lesser of Evilism conversation has been happening for 200 years in this country. "If Johnson had been running all by himself, he would not have been acceptable to anyone. The only thing that made him acceptable to the world was that the shrewd capitalists, the shrewd imperialists, knew that the only way people would run toward the fox would be if you showed them a wolf. So they created a ghastly alternative. And it had the whole world - including people who call themselves Marxists - hoping that Johnson would beat Goldwater." --- Malcolm X, 1964.

The way I see it, if you tell me you're reducing the amount of plastic in your packaging in an effort for "sustainable development" you're still using plastic that's going to end up in the sea and kill the planet. No lesser evil, same bullsh*t... The kind of evils of "same amount of plastic" or "reduced amount of plastic" are just different, not better or worse. and yet we could debate longly on all the hypocrisy

They used to put lead into gasoline. Liberal environmentalists wanted to take it out and conservatives wanted to leave it in. Lead got taken out of gasoline. So, it's not more or less plastic...it's a known neurotoxin or no known neurotoxin. Easy choice to make if you ask me.

There were alternatives. I voted for Jill Stein. When the DNC realized they had picked a criminal gang to lead the party, they should all ethically got behind a third party candidate like Jill Stein. Bernie could have been persuaded if the DNC stepped up do do something ethical. It is so convenient to blame Julian because it is so ridiculous.

voting was your mistake. Heck, I like Jill Steins personality too, but climbing in the world of politics is not going to get the results she would expect. Let me break this down. It's really simple: 1) Clinton was terrible and Trump is way worse. 2) No one expected Trump to win. 3) Wikileaks attempted to, and succeeded in, revealing the terribleness of Clinton in a way that did maximum damage. 4) Nairn is upset because Trump is president and because Wikileaks bears some small but not measurable responsibility for that. 5) Assange is upset because Trump is president but realizes it's not really his fault and any true responsibility for Clinton losing the election is not on him or Wikileaks.
@icgantshat

5) Assange has the ability to step back and maintain the ethics of Wikileaks without cow-towing to party politics. The truth is the utmost principle and the Democratic party fucked it for themselves. Wikileaks is impartial, so if the truth causes you to lose the election thats your own fault, even if the alternative is worse
@drmodestoesq
@drmodestoesq 7 жыл бұрын
I only have issue with number 5. Assange probably thought Clinton would win. All the polls said so. So he thought he was taking a flamethrower to the smoke filled corridors of corruption and party politics at the DNC. Trump, who he probably thinks is worse, won. He also knows his data dumps probably tipped the election to Trump. So now he's covering his moral ass by saying that it's going to be a new day at the Democratic party because of him. He has shown their base the need for reform. He's the good cop, Trumps the bad cop. He also knows he's been a tool of Putin and is searching for a self-description besides that of a thug's unwitting and naive stooge.
@gravygravyjosh
@gravygravyjosh 7 жыл бұрын
Well according to Wikileaks principals if he has the relevant information it should be published. Their role is not to influence the election one way or another, its to let the public know the relevant facts. If that happens to influence the election that's collateral damage of the truth. But yes maybe they would have been more cautious if they could do more to prevent Republicans taking advantage of it

In my opinion Wikileaks influenced an election just before it was set and helped put in to power one of the greatest criminals in the history of the presidency. Trump left the climate agreements, the Iranian nuclear deal, gave super tax cuts to the rich and left the middle and lower class with an 8 trillion dollar debt. The doomsday clock (made by the board of atomic scientists) went as low as it has been in history... 100 seconds to midnight. I agree with Assange, both are extremely bad, but Trump was a whole new level of bad and it's forever changed the democratic party. I'm making this comment after Trump bumbled the Covid crisis and republicans stormed the capital. It will take a decade to uncover all the corruption and crime Trump and his group have caused.

Allan Nairn spent the entire interview with Jullian trying to interrupt him to frame the discussion... Then he get's an unchecked Monologue from 7:30-10:30 Where he repeats his talking point over and over like a Propagandist. Instead of having a discussion on the substance of the leaks it was a discussion about the Source, Which is purposeful obfuscation in a discussion with an institution whose entire purpose is to protect sources, then when that failed it regressed into the same old Lesser of Evilism discussion that Malcolm X Framed so well in the LBJ V GoldWater election.

Julian Assange's most valuable trait is his unwavering integrity. The world needs him and many more like him. He is intellectually and ethically honest in his refusal to buy into "tribalism," meaning choosing a "tribe" or alleged lesser evil and then defending that tribe no matter how bad its behavior. There are better options and higher priorities than tribalism's groupthink and conformity.. Over past decades, the lesser evil strategy hasn't proved to move the U.S.and the world forward. Think beyond this static, stagnant fallacy. Assange lives the example of baseline human decency, and if more people caught on and did the same we would at least have a chance of reaching what Malcolm Gladwell called a "tipping point," moving the world in a more ethical direction. People who promote the lesser evil view often accuse those who disagree with it of demanding "purity." However, the lesser evil advocates declare themselves the ones who define good and evil, and their standards are extremely low.

Allan Nairn is absolutely wrong. As long as the party can succeed by offering us the lesser of two evils they will continue to offer us the lesser of two evils. But when the party learned that if they offer us the lesser of two evils they might lose they will realize they have to offer us far better candidates. The road Alan suggests is merely the slow road to greater evil it is not the better route.

From today's perspective of the UK Magistrate's muzzling through torture based on nothing charges, countless expert witness testimony, a fight for a COVID banned mere hand full of journalists, professionals, coworkers, family. Turned away in favor of reserved "VIP" special seating for unattended parties of the UK court. The American lawyers who sat with the state prosecution, have presented no physical case that proves hacking or harm to others. It is they who are protecting war crimes under their first amendment, not his own patriotic rights, as formally declared by the UN Working Group on International Torture. In 2017, the unprepared make up man, his opinions and agreeable facade all washes out in time. Maybe we should put him and the rest of the political class in the gas chamber after Lee Harvey Oswald's State of Virginia CIA strong handlers do it to Julian. Welcome to an inverted totalitarianism transformed into the military empire of economic collapse. People have taken to the streets, and what has it solved? Those people in power, none of them have resigned, just like the bankers were never jailed, just like the unabated polluting and plundering of the planet for a fake currency. Were the releases political, does it matter, and is it valid to even ask the question? I think Klein is right that the timing was highly political. There was no need to time them to cause as much damage as possible. They could all have been released earlier and the public still make up their own minds. If this had been done then any criticism towards Wikileaks would not carry much weight. Maybe a reason for the timing is that WL is in the habit of timing releases to maximise impact and the same tactic was applied in this case as well, unwisely in my view. This creates the overwhelming perception of political bias, whether this was the true intent or not.

Despite Assange recommendation that we transcend the two party duopoly the comments on this interview is fraught with partisanship. Hillary is well known for her war crimes. Assange does a very credible rebuttal of Naomi Kline's criticism of Wikileaks for tipping the scales for Trump. "Do I prefer Cholera or Gonorrhea". Still, should the perfect be the enemy of the good? Great discussion. But the Democratic establishment is loath to change. I say its the Zionists at fault.

Amy brought Alan on so this would be the case of frowns for the democratic socialist. A huge mishap which still has not been removed from KZfaq. But since truth is persistent, his execution will remove all trace. In a police state, that's all in order.

Nairn is only voicing his opinion, not bringing facts to the table. Very interesting coming from an 'investigative' journalist.
