I do like his use of space. Shredders these days seem to feel like "good" means filling the space with as many notes as possible. Julian Lage is a more dynamic player than that and I appreciate it. That being said, hyperbole like "most fascinating and skilled of our time" feels like an overreach. There are so many incredible guitar players out there and comparing players of different styles is impossible

Yeah, for me he is. On top of his incredible dynamics and sound, as if that’s not incredible enough, he’s doing things harmonically that are Bill Evans-level mind blowing. And he does it effortlessly. I hate him. Lol! Seriously, this kid is a once-in-a-generation talent.

Him and Blake Mills are my top players. Blake’s playing is always totally out of the box playing. Julian has more jazz chops and is very tasteful just like Blake

For me it was just like... INSTANTANEOUS. I had no idea that stuff was in 'em. I don't think HE did, either! I just found this stuff.. 0:20, 3:20, 4:40. Goddam. I'm facile enough to _hear_ Lage is using numeric patterns. He's drifting into tens, then sixes, nine note groupings, twelve, just then... some connecting bits. But it's still impossible. WHY DOESNT HE FLUB?!? Oz Noy does that grouping stuff, tempting to say it's an Eric Johnson influence, but they come to it as... musicians, working the same IDEAS. This fellow doesn't need to cop licks. I think he already HAS a few....

Agree absolutely stunning. Got to talk to him recently. He practices improvising counterpoint. He clearly has some practice secrets that work! Everything he does blows my mind.

agree, it is a great sounding one, I think a '52.....but he make all his instruments sound great.

That's a 65 reissue with the ashtray hardtail as well. Should have one modern 4 position switch on there, but other than that and the tuners, should be as close to a mid 60s tele a sound as you can have. Perhaps mass production is the wrong answer for guitar making.

Actually, it is just good jazz guitar solo playing. Not "other worldly" - just competence on the instrument. Quite lovely.
