Julian Lennon, the first son of John Lennon and his first wife, Cynthia Powell, had a complex and often painful relationship with his father, which significantly impacted his childhood and later life. Here are some key points about Julian's experiences and relationship with his father:
Absence During Childhood: John Lennon was frequently absent during Julian's early years, largely due to his commitments with the Beatles and his own personal issues. John's focus on his career and later on his own self-discovery journeys left little room for his responsibilities as a father.
Divorce of His Parents: Julian was only five years old when his parents divorced in 1968. The divorce was fueled in part by John's affair with Yoko Ono. After the divorce, John's involvement in Julian's life became even more sporadic. John and Yoko moved to the United States in 1971, which further strained his relationship with Julian, who remained in the UK with his mother.
Emotional Distance and Neglect: Julian has spoken about feeling abandoned and neglected by his father. He described John as being distant and at times harsh, noting that there was very little expression of love and support from him. This emotional neglect left Julian feeling insecure and unvalued.
Impact of John's Remarks: John Lennon made several public statements that Julian found hurtful. For instance, John famously remarked in an interview that Julian had come out of a "whiskey bottle on a Saturday night," which deeply affected Julian. Such remarks contributed to Julian feeling like he was an unplanned and unwanted child.
John's Death and Aftermath: John Lennon's murder in 1980 when Julian was just 17 years old complicated his feelings of loss and unresolved emotional issues with his father. The relationship never had a chance to mature or heal before John's sudden death.
Financial and Estate Issues: After John's death, much of his estate was left to Yoko Ono and their son Sean, with Julian receiving a smaller portion. This led to additional legal battles that Julian initiated to secure a fair share of his father's legacy, further complicating his emotional ties to his family.
Reflections in Music: Julian Lennon's own music career, which began in the 1980s, often reflected his complex feelings about his father and their relationship. His debut album, "Valotte," has tracks that hint at his attempts to come to terms with his past and the shadow of his father’s legacy.
Despite these challenges, Julian Lennon has worked to forge his own path, both in his music career and in his philanthropic efforts, often focusing on environmental and humanitarian issues. His journey reflects his efforts to understand and move beyond his difficult past with his father.

John Lennon was taken over by a powerful witch. This powerful witch, Yoko Ono, controlled him. He was her slave. He was no longer able to be himself. Do not judge him. If you were overpowered by the occult energy, you would not be able to be yourself. The Beatles wouldn't have existed without John. We owe him a great debt. DO NOT JUDGE HIM.

When I found out that Cynthia came home to find John & Yoko sitting in the kitchen, John in his bathrobe, & Yoko in Cynthia’s, that that was how she found out John was cheating on her, I never cared for John after that. What a JERK. And then Yoko gave Julian practically nothing after John’s death, absolutely unfair to Julian.

John was a brilliant musician but far from a good person. After being neglected so badly by his father, seeing all of the promotion given to the Ono woman’s child must have been deeply wounding. Yoko Ono doesn’t come out of it well either as she was the prime mover. Perhaps it made Julian the better person not being around these cruel narcissists.

It's really never the kid's fault, a parent's behavior/attitude towards them, it's a reflection of the parents feeling about themselves. When you're growing up you think it's you, not being good enough The other kid, John probably saw yoko in him, and he seemed to see yoko as his muse, rather than his 'youthful' mistake But this man seems so nice and good for him that he worked for what he has In a way maybe it's a blessing that he didn't have his father around as he was growing up, a sort of divine protection

I recall a radio interview with John Lennon year ago, when his second son was an infant. John spoke about how deeply he loved his son Sean and how “that boy” as he put it, was conceived “out of deep pure love” versus “youthful hurried passion” with his first child. I vividly thought what a fool Lennon was, speaking thusly in public, when both sons would hear their father speaking without any sensitivity or regret at all one day. . Lennon was a very talented, creative man. But he was an unpleasant, self absorbed human being! I wish both his sons every happiness and peace in life.

When I brought my father to live near me in his last year of life, and he required a lot of care, I'd go to see him every other day or so. One time, a nurse commented to me about what a good relationship he and I had. I almost laughed in her face. My devotion to his care was in spite of our relationship, not because of it. I think most people agree, Cynthia raised an outstanding remarkable humble kind empathetic young man with a good head oh his shoulders and a big heart…… to me that calls for more recognition than JL or any music he wrote, an nice as they sound, if it’s pure hypocrisy behind it, it’s not good music. He excused so many inexcusable behaviors and traits of his father….. he’s a good man to come out of all this rejection and mistreatment. Really well done Cynthia 🌹 as much as it hurts sometimes, you’re actually lucky you dodged that train wreck. It also says a lot that you both kept your head held high with dignity after that mistreatment, and that your son saw the bigger picture of being kind and thoughtful by letting the fans have their moment while remaining reserved when he easily could have been like “ oh really? You think he’s great huh, well I have a few stories to tell you about this “great man”. ✌️

Julian is a credit to both his Mother and himself. What a wonderful and spiritual man. So much forgiveness and compassion, John truly missed out on this wonderful human being. I can tell you why John got angry when he saw Julian happy....because it highlighted his own demons, of the neglect and guilt, which at any time he could have rectified but didn't....this is not Julian's issues but boy do other people project their problems onto others. I'm glad that Julian has been able to forgive John because he definitely would make a better parent. All of this is a sign of society and fame too young, when all that matters is the legacy you leave to your family. It showed weak mindedness in John at the time, but Julian has been the one to do the healing that I think John was always searching for but not quite attaining. Just 'Imagine' if people worked on the shadows within themselves, how much better the world really would be.

He grew up an only child by his aunt Mimi and her husband. He was spoiled thru this and became hard to control. He was an intelligent man but his past was deep within him and he was abusive with his wife and son blaming them for his not being a bachelor for women and fame. This was so bad that when they appeared on the EdSullivan show, when there was a close up of him it read; Sorry girls he’s married and he threw a fit! Many times he was very abusive and cubicle with people. Now McCartney mother died almost the same time as John’s and he was about the same age as John and look at what a good man Paul is!

What amazes is how much, by some, John Lennon is idolized, almost worshipped. He was part of a good group of musicians who came on the scene at a pivotal point of cultural change and hit it BIG. They wrote some very pleasant and enjoyable songs, had enormous charm in front of the camera, but their song book is not in the same league as that of the Gershwins, Cole Porter, Mercer, Tom T. Hall, Mick and Keith, Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, Otis Blackwell, Buddy Holly, and so many others. John was a deeply wounded, hag ridden boy who grew into an untrustworthy and unpleasant man. He was a fair musician and a minor song writer in the great scheme of things.

What a kind and forgiving soul. Julian’s caring nature comes through in this audio. His biological father (John) certainly missed out on what could have been an amazing father-son relationship. No one likes to be rejected, abandoned or abused. From what Julian was saying, it seems like his biological father had red flags of narcissism. I’ve recently listened to an audiobook, Complex PTSD: From Surviving to Thriving by Pete Walker. A book I recommend for anyone, therapist or survivor. The fact that Julian’s father disliked it when Julian showed signs of happiness or joy by shouting at him, is a definite red flag for narcissism. They hate it when anyone is happy because of their own lack of inner happiness. It would be interesting to know John’s relationship with his own father. Often this disconnected relationship (father-son, mother-daughter) is generational/ancestral. It takes a brave person in a family to want stop this cycle. I say ‘try’ because some people in families don’t want things to change (it’s too painful or they’re in denial or they just like conflict, it gives them a fix of power and control). There is understanding as to why Julian is cautious about becoming a father. Well done Julian for sharing your story, moving forward and continuing your healing journey to rise above this trauma. A thumbs up 👍

If you were overpowered by the occult energy, you would not be able to be yourself. The Beatles wouldn't have existed without John. We owe him a great debt. DO NOT JUDGE HIM.

Not sure why people always praised John Lennon, he wasn't such a great guy! Love Julian, he turned out incredible and has done amazing.

People didn't know. There wasn't the internet. They just liked him because he made good music and sometimes said cool things. He seemed to be the rebel, which is appealing when you're young. I think a lot more people now know John's dark side.

WOW, he sounds really nice- a genuine, level headed person. I never heard him speak before. Candid interview and he turned out to be very nice- thanks to his mother. Bless, Kim

Cynthia was a wonderful woman and Julian is a credit to her. John was too screwed up by his neglectful father and the death of his mother. Imagine having two sons and writing 'Beautiful Boy' to just ONE of them.
