Julian Schnabel Bouquet of Mistakes at PACE GALLERY

James Kalm was a young artist newly arrived in the Big Apple, to study at the Art Student’s League on the GI Bill, when he stumbled into Mary Boone’s Gallery in SoHo for the first time. The exhibition was a revelation, and the indelible impression the works left have resonated ever since. The artist was Julian Schnabel, and this show was a harbinger of what would become known as the “GoGo” Eighties. In the forty-something years since that golden age, your correspondent has tried to keep an eye on Schnabel’s production. Over that period, he’s watched as the work and its reception has waxed and waned, come into fashion and fallen out of fashion, but always, for this reporter, interesting none the less. “Bouquet of Mistakes” is a term that Julian coined during a painter’s symposium in the early eighties. In many ways it expresses the spontaneous and freewheeling modality of artistic production and an acceptance of the risk of failure that was in opposition to the sterile formalism of Minimalism, and Conceptualism that had dominated the New York scene for a decade. Described as “Velvet Paintings” many of these mixed media works on fabric have also been treated with bleach, and fitted with extravagantly thick frames. A musical introduction is provided by EOM. This program was recorded October 5, 2023. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk
The inset video clip of the early Schnabel painting was from the Exhibition "Schema: World as Diagram", an exhibition by Raphael Rubinstein and Heather Bause Rubinstein presented at Marlborough Gallery New York, during the summer of 2023.

Schnabel was at his best when he was enigmatically situated between sculpture on the one hand and drawing on the other. The painting in-between lived from that tension, as in the video insert, which I liked. It's always a bad sign when a painting needs a frame. He's making sketchy decorations that almost seem to simulate paintings, or art, for that matter. He conforms perfectly to the market's need for size and speed. Nowhere does one find even a trace of effort, commitment, dare I say, suffering.

The frame question is interesting, and something I've worked with since the early 1980s. It's not a "bad sign," but an acknowledgement that there is a long history of the frame and what it does to something within it. Before the Abstract Expressionists, frames were the norm, they were the guys who started the idea that frames were useless...JK

@@jameskalm I can dig frames, but only when the painting is designed for it, "works with", as you say. And, old paintings tend to naturally suit them, I think. But, it can remind me of a phrase that I found in Art Forum around thirty years ago, the "vitrine effect". Put something in a glass case and it's automatically reified. Francis Bacon got to the point that he was putting huge paintings behind glass and ensconcing them in "gold" frames (don't think it was the real thing, but certainly metal). I like the opposite effect, beautiful facture that nevertheless shows how it was made. This is going to sound a bit off-colour, but frames sometimes remind me of condoms.

As usual James/Lauren…your somewhat more than half-assed ‘reporting’ keeps me interested. Keep feeding us your unending exuberance for everything painterly. Everything is all on the table all of the time. We can all like it or leave it, but you open it up for those that think they have something to say

I beg to differ. Schnabel is still making interesting paintings. They feel very romantic like epic adventure abstractions. They remind me of some of courbets skys or moments in Schiller. Not all of them though. I think the frames are a device to make them weird and kitsch on the register. Perhaps even to keep the tension on which side of the fence they lie for the audience. Given they have that tension and there is quality painting going on, (one can’t deny they have a painterly non pretentiousness and are surprising-unconventional) I think they make the cut and are indeed interesting painting which have stood the (40y) test of time. They have a place in the narrative trajectory of art history, Julian forged a new path from the Ab ex generation, many young artists build on that path now. Nonetheless, the greatest painting in this video was monks ontology of art painting. Looked potent. Good stuff. Thanks Kate

Schnabel is one of my all-time favorites, and I started out really hating him back in art school. That said, these works seem just a bit too facile and pat, almost impressions of his better more "fraught" works. But hey! Forget Julian, who is this mysterious philosopher painter Loren!!? Wonderful to see your work, and "yes" is a great answer! Peace out, and to Kate - aloha...

@@jameskalm This city has undergone so many waves of change, with a particularly nice peak in the late 90s-early 00s, I'd say, but each has added another layer to this complicated cake. The West Berlin of the 70s is considered absolutely legendary, the peak of that era the couple of years when Bowie was here, of all places, to get over his drug habit. He lived in Schöneberg, across the hall from Iggy Pop. I lived in Moabit in 97-98, a part that is now gentrified and the second-strongest constituency for the Green Party in the entire country, but really, the entire centre of Berlin is green on the electoral map, including where I live, in former East Berlin, in the middle. Check out Arkonaplatz on Google. Good night.

As many have said, Schnabel has been hit or miss for me as well. His previous show at Pace, the 'painted' Mexican tarpaulins was a bit on the lightweight side and not very compelling and actually a bit boring. This show has a lot more pop and paint and I think that's what Schnab does best. However I regard the ten paintings stacked together as actually oversized drawings rather than fully realized paintings. I quite like the colors. In fact, for me, that's where he's underrated - as a unique colorist. Not sure it's "great" art, but the inherent weirdness of his work certainly grabs one's attention.

Since the beginning of the James Kalm Report project (eighteen years ago, and over 1560 vids) I have followed a set of rules. One of the main ones has been to never show the work of Loren Munk. At this point, I made an exception, because it was a serendipitous coincidence to be in "Scheme: World as Diagram" right next to Julian. There's a link to that show in the description above...JK
