Julie Andrews singing "Dear Friend", one of two songs from the Bock and Harnick show "She Loves Me" she recorded as a single issued in England. (The flip was the title song, usually sung by the male lead). Julie was originally slated for the Broadway production, but dropped out due to film commitments and then was to make it as a film with Dick Van Dyke. But the flop of "Star" prompted MGM to pay her $1 million not to make the film. Pity, ideal material for her, more so than several other films she did make. Cleaned of minor noise and haze by Tormented Artist Ink Studios (me).

I agree. Julie has a lovely rendition here, but when Barbara Cook sings it...what emotion, so heartbreaking. Brings tears every time....

Yes, Ms. Cook may OWN IT, but it is glorious to hear it from Julie with her impeccable pronunciation, diction and denationalization. Just an observation ~ not a criticism. She places her own interpretation on the work without the pressure/responsibility of having to 'perform' it 8 times a week. If the project had gone forward as a movie I'm 'bloody' well sure we'd have every emotion and heart-string played upon and delivered in said motion picture. But it's only and forever Ms. Cook's.

@@hasadigajackdorse-eye1922Harold Prince was the original director but after delays it was then taken up by Blake Edwards. Maurice Chevalier was rumored to be cast as Maraczek. Things were well underway. Sheldon Harnick did an interview recalling how far along they were and how excited everyone was to get going, but then MGM was bought out and James T. Aubrey took over as head of the studio to make changes. He heavily focused on films that appealed to the youth, more topical/socially current. Musicals and more old fashioned material like this was canned.

The flowers, the linen, the crystal I see Were carefully chosen for people like me. The silver agleam and the candles aglow, Your favorite songs on request. Each colorful touch in the finest of taste, And notice how subtly the tables are spaced. The music is muted, the lighting is low; No wonder I feel so depressed. Charming, romantic, the perfect cafe Then as if it isn't bad enough a violin starts to play Candles and wine, tables for two But where are you dear friend? Couples go past me I see how they look. So discreetly sympathetic when they see the rose and the book. I make believe nothing is wrong How long can I pretend? Please make it right Don't break my heart Don't let it end, dear friend. (Waiter: we're closing up Amalia: so soon? Waiter: It looks like your friend didn't get here Amalia: I'm sure there's a very good reason Waiter: then he'll write to you, And you can patch it up And I hope you'll be very happy Amalia: oh, thank you) I make believe nothing is wrong How long can I pretend? I disagree! Cook is wonderful of course but this Julie Andrews version is a lot easier to the modern ear for it's not as "operatic" and hence it's more commercial. The never made movie version of "She Loves Me", with Andrews as the female lead, is one of the great losses of 1960s cinema!

Johnes >The composers never talked with Julie for the Broadway She Loves me.Bock and Harnick always wanted Barbara Cook for the role . Julie ,Dick,Carol Burnett and Jack Cassidy, the only member of the Broadway cast, would have made the film that was canceled as other Julie s films in the late sixties Ido ido with also Dick Van Dyke and Say it with music with Frank Sinatra. But as I said before the composers wanted Barbara Cook as Amalia from the begining and she made auditions with many actors including Tony Perkins for the role of Georg and Daniel Massey was cast.Barbara and Daniel looked more like the actorswho made the Lubitch movie The shop around the corner Margaret Sullavan and James Stewart. Maybe if Perkins had been cast the musical would have been filmed with Perkins and Cook because he was a famous movie star in the sixties.

Julie wasnt slated for the original Broadway production.Harold Prince wanted her but the composers Bock and Harnick always wanted Cook as Amalia and talked to her about the role years before. the musical opened in 1963. .When Barbara was cast they chose the leading male performer. She preferred Anthony Perkins but Prince chose Daniel Massey who was excellent in the role. The movie would have been made in1968 at MGM with Julie,Dick,Carol Burnett and Jack Cassidy the only member of the original cast and would have been directed by Blake Edwards.Julie and Dick could jhave been good but for me these were Barbara and Daniel roles

@@pecsbadman Yes, Van Dyke. If I'm not mistaken, I think Maurice Chevalier was considered for the role of Mr. Maraczek. It was all set to be made, but MGM changed ownership during this time and the new ownership wanted to shift gears toward a younger audience with topical, current subjects. This planned film was one of those that got axed.

Sadly, Barbara didn't get to do any of her Broadway roles on film, but she did do a 1950s tv version of Arlen & Harburg's *Bloomer Girl,* the black-and-white kinescope of which can be seen here on KZfaq.

Do I understand that on the flip side of this recording Julie sang the song 'She Loves Me'...? That must have sounded a bit odd. Rather like the story of Sinatra wanting to record the Gershwin song 'The Man I Love'... Even changing the pronouns don't help in an instance like this: 'Some day she'll come along...the girl I love....and she'll be big and strong... ' Amazonian images spring to mind.
