Julie Fowlis sings ‘Go Your Way’, composed by influential English folk singer Annie Briggs. This song is taken from Julie's album ‘alterum’.
Recorded in Loth Church, Highlands of Scotland, on a cold day in February. Built by in the infamous Duke of Sutherland in the early 1800’s who was responsible for the eviction of thousands of Highland people during the Highland Clearances, there were churches on that site for several hundred years previous. It is said to have originally been built on an intersection of lay lines and therefore a place of intense energy. It has earlier dark history as Janet Horne, the last woman in Britain to be accused of witchcraft, was taken from an earlier church building on that site to her execution. It is said that her daughter (who was with her) managed to escape by shape shifting into an animal.
A film by Craig Mackay, Pictii. Thanks to Alistair Ferguson.

@@Khumry This is an inside joke. Julie started out singing exclusively in Gallic, the Celtic language of Scotland. Some of us have followed her for years and really liked those songs. More recently, she has started to sing some English music as well. So I was saying that I had listened to her for so long that I had started to understand the meaning of her songs.

It warms my heart to hear modern artists follow the musical traditions of old when I hear this song I think of Anne Briggs and Bert Jansch who imo really laid the groundwork and paved the way for modern artists to follow these old traditional songs

I don't know why, and I'm not a country music fan, but somehow I get the feeling that if this song was broadcast on any country music station anywhere in North America, it'd be a huge hit. It's not a country song as such, but it has a bit of a country feel to it. And even if I'm wrong in my assessment, there's one thing I can say that I know is right: this is a beautiful, absolutely sublime song and vocal performance.

Intended or not - this song in such a place means to me a powerful gesture of forgiveness, letting go and healing, yet not forgetfulness. Julie's performance is just wonderful. And, last not least, the video is another masterpiece by Craig Mackay. Mòran taing dhuibh!

One of the reasons why people should live is the ability to hear how you singing. Thanks to you, the world is a better place and life is more beautiful. I combine my respect and admiration. JUlie, you sing very well. You have a nice voice. When you sing in scottish language, I can see the celtic influence between Scottland and my galician country.

I love Julie and her music and I love this song. One thing that is slightly disappointing is the video has her only pretending to play what appears to be a tenor uke. There are parts where she many be actually playing it, but others where she definitely is not. I wish the production had not done that. They could have just done without the instrument. As it is, it detracts from the essential genuineness of her music.
