He is hesitant as his past has traumatized him. He has not recovered and it seems he will take a long time to as he mentioned (when asked) he is guessing its a guy at the other side of the curtain who may have come to reconcile. He treasures friendship more than a stable intimate relationship at this moment. He seems to talk all the time about past hurtful relationships and how he treasures sincere relationship now.
