Vercingetorix never expected the Romans would decided to besiege his fortress. Both the Romans and the Gauls had limited food supply and foraging was difficult due to Vercingetorix's scorched earth policy around the surrounding countryside. Vercingetorix released the non-combatants from Alesia with the hope that at least they would survive as slaves. However, the Romans chose not to take them captives as they had limited food supply to sustain both sides.

You know what happened to the Roman's logistical system by chance? Normally they're really good about maintaining supply line's between their army and supply depot's.

@@rc59191 They were deep inside the enemy territories so the supply line is shaky. Also as you can see in the movie, Cease doesn't have support from the Senate back in Rome because they wanted him to lose, so the supplies were hard to get.

They cannot risk the chance of letting Vercingetorix escaping by blending in with the non-combatants. It is also might be a staged attack by Gallic warriors. They could disguised as non-combatants and would attack once they are inside Roman encampment. Also the non-cambatants could relay vital information to other Gallic warriors that the Romans themselves are having limited provisions and could be even besieged by them. That's why the Romans chose not to to let the non-combatants leave.

The Gauls could've trained the women and boys to hold a spear and sword/dagger. I mean if Rome is gonna just sack and pillage their city then might as well die fighting than being raped/or sold as slaves

It is interesting to me that Vercingetorix would think that the Romans would do anything about the women and children, especially since they thought the Romans were so cruel. I guess he thought it was at least worth a try.

I probably he think that for women was better to be slave than to be death , and roman didn't kill unarmed people not outside battlefield

I've always wondered why the Romans didn't just let the women and children leave. They don't have to take them in as slaves but let them into the fort and out the other end. Its better then leaving them in no-mans land.

Demon Hunter they didn't want to risk them telling the other Gauls information about the fortification and weapons they had. They didn't want to risk that the Gauls were hiding in the crowd and would attack. They also didn't want to risk Vercingetorix escaping with them

i have been studying history as my passion (cept for my gal). I do not hold a positive opinion of Caesar. We do owe Rome in ways, yet we owe nothing to Caesar.
