A quick look at the Jullian Travel Pochade Box, after receiving it from Dick Blick. It is sized to handle a quarter sheet of watercolor paper (11’ x 15”) or perhaps a bit bigger. There is a ledge at the lower part of the outside of the box (the ‘lid) to support a watercolor block or you could tape your sheet down upon this ‘lid’ of the box which lifts. The angle of the ‘lid’ is sturdily supported by a hinged panel in the back and the ‘lid’ holding your paper can go form flat to 10° and much steeper angles. A fairly large drawer slides out on the right side and this drawer has a sliding top which can be extended outward, providing a surface upon which you could place a palette box. With this extended, the rear of the drawer opens up and you could place a water cup there for ready access. It has a bit of expected wobble but not too bad. There is a front slide out tray and also one on the left hand side. And you have access to the interior of the box if you walk around to the back. The interior of the Pochade has an area lined with aluminum, presumably for easy clean up of paints, rags or brushes. It weighs in at 6lb, 12 oz. without any supplies loaded so it’s fairly heavy. It has rubber feet on the front edge as well as on the bottom so it can be used on a table or desk and stands upright, briefcase style, when you have it all closed up and are using its handle. The latches are not the best. One of mine does not latch, but could be fixed easily. It has a 1/4-20 threaded hole centered on the bottom to accept common camera tripods or quick release plates. Because of its weight and size, it would be very important to make sure your connection with tripod is cranked down tight and is as solid as you can make it. And could be too heavy so a sturdy tripod would be advised. The overall design is really excellent for watercolor painters who want to paint flat or relatively flat, (for control of washes) and it’s quick and easy to change the angle. The drawer with slide out on the right is a great place for a portable palette and water cup, making it ideal for right handers. The other slide out trays will be ideal for laying brushes while working or paper towels, spray bottles, etc. It has lots of room to pack all your supplies in, though that will add to its weight. With a bit of tweaking on the latches, or possibly replacing them, it will be a useful Pochade box for plein air events, paint outs, classroom use and even as a studio easel that can be closed up with supplies and put away. But who does that? 🤣😂😆
