If you want to do something really crazy, watch an air quality monitor go from good to extremely hazardous in a very short amount of time. People are so strange.

Only thing that sucks is no one celebrates it for it is and what it means. Like all these people in LA shooting the fireworks. Not one of them cares that’s it’s the 4th. They care that they can be idiots and shoot off tons of fireworks on a day everyone else is so it’s harder for them to get caught doing it. They don’t care that people get killed and seriously injured because of them when 90% of the city is shooting them off. They don’t care that they can burn down their house or a neighbors house. They don’t care that the block streets to do it, harass those that want to get by and then leave all the trash on the street. They also really don’t care that on a day like this, emergency services respond to 10 times as many calls for injuries and fires, hampering response for those that actually need it. They over burden emergency services and risk other people’s lives. They don’t celebrate the Nation. They celebrate being careless idiots. More people get hurt and killed from injuries that could have been prevented than any other time of the year. It’s not really that beautiful. It’s a shame that’s what people do. Put lives and neighborhoods at risk thinking it’s celebrating.

This was amazing! Even while he was landing, you could still fireworks exploding in the horizon. I've seen anyone fly a helicopter to showcase our exuberance for the 4th of July.🎉🎉🎉

That’s a neat perspective! Ironically last night up here in the high desert the Sheriff’s helos (flying MUCH lower) were out “chasing” aerials, shining their spotlight on people launching them. Not sure what good it did as the people would go right back to it after the Helo left. Hopefully the pilots had fun. The fire department on the other hand, way too many fires. With all the thick vegetation I’m surprised a big one hasn’t lit off yet. I know we launched tankers to just about every point on the compass the last few days! Chasing down aerials is truly like wack-a-mole. An impossible task. You're right about the fire issue. On our way home we overheard a fire chopper on the radio explaining that they were "busier than a one-legged man at a butt kicking competition".

My dad, who is retired and got the FAA master pilot award, used to fly med evac heli's. He didn't like flying in LA on New Years or the 4th of July. Sometimes people would take pot shots at him, thinking they were the police.

Like the 5th of November here. When Guy Fawkes attempt to destroy the Houses of Parliament by exploding gunpowder, failed. I almost wish he had succeeded. The Gun powder plot has been celebrated every 5th of November since, with huge firework displays and bonfires.

Pretty darn spectacular so THANKS, but the video was not sharp and clear as if there was something on the lens or windshield or the focus was off.

I noticed the same thing comparing to last year's footage. I think the issue was that this year's weather created a more concentrated haze layer at a lower altitude and for much of the flight we were above it. Hopefully next year the haze layer is more cooperative. :)

A small criticism.. You would probably have gotten this video even better if you had had a lower ISO number in the GoPro camera. I can see how hard the sensor is working. But as usual, it's wonderful to see L.A. from above. Thx!

Question: is there a reason you had to “taxi” to the runway and take off from there, as opposed to simply taking off straight away? Just curious.

Fair question. I taxied to the runway so our departure would be from the center of the field. My goal was to create as much distance as possible between us and the fireworks around the airport.

I will admit this video is interesting, however I do wonder about the danger; the expense is undoubtedly tax deductible as part of your you tube channel, so at least financially it is less of bust.

The one thing that I do not understand is the poor video quality. This video is absolutely unwatchable on anything other than a small phone screen. I hope that in the future Micah has the budget and the knowledge to get a quality camera system that can take much much better video. It's a shame, this would have been an amazing video otherwise.

It's not the video quality, but the amount of pollution that those fireworks put out. It's astounding. You can watch it happen on an air quality monitor.
