I'm starting to get really into jump up drum and bass. FM synthesis, or Frequency Modulation, is such an interesting topic. Sound Design is a huge aspect of DnB and for all you nerds out there like me, this is the really fun stuff. In this video I show you how to make your own jump up bass, create variations and also share with you the special secret of introducing non-integer ratios to introduce inharmonic partials to your sound.

You are the best at explaining this stuff. I can watch you for 5 minutes and understand something I won't understand from others after hours of frustration. I think specifically what it is is you are SHOWING and PLAYING what you are doing while you explain it. So many people just go through all of the steps and they don't play the result until way too late, or they don't show what they are doing as they do it, etc... Whatever formula you have going, please keep it up!

Oh, that’s really great! For a small video project I was just on the outlook for a somewhat irritating bass sound. And since I planned to finally dive into Vital this month anyway your vid is double-welcome and perfectly timed.

Very cool. I use Vital and Skip over the cost of Serum as Vital can do almost anything Serum can! Cool vid. Learn something every time you drop a video so... Drop more!

Very cool! I find that the crisp sound of so-called West Coast synthesis lends itself well to percussion sounds, but I also like making growls and bass sounds. Another thing I like playing with is modulating FM by key tracker so that the higher the pitch, the greater the modulation, just to add a little timbral spiciness to a plain-sounding lead sequence.

Too right. That is such a great technique for keeping it interesting and switching up. Love it. Thanks for suggesting that. I've not used it for a while as it vacated my brain space. Sure it will help others too.

Plucks and icy sounds mostly, as well as ring mod karplus type stuff. By the way, you are absolutely glowing.

Plucks! I love making plucks with FM too. Great shout. And thank you. I'm certainly in the latter stages of recovery from my long term illness now. I can even tell with the way that I speak and effortless it feels now.

Another great video, will get stuck in once I get back to normal (been out the country pedalling, still trying to remember my name etc 😂). Modern jump up defo not as good as the old, but I’m happy to move with the times.
